What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

I'm spending my time on sane forums than getting ready to run to work.....

Bravo for your answer.
Like it.
It took me over 20 years to come to terms that I have had brain damage. all these whizzy books come out on ....your brain being plastic... It changes after damage and your brain adjusts...my answer to that is..... Yawn.
Probably like what you think hey on your illness.

Very few if any people have heard of SchizoA where I live. I have a little folder I put together. with a desription of schizoaffective disorder, the symptoms and treatments.

I put in my medication, what symptoms I usually have, the doses etc. I gave this to the hospital admissions, the chemist and the Gp.

I have given some of this info to a couple of people after I knew them for a while just to explain about my MI when they asked about it. Its pretty obvious I have a MI, so its more a question of educating rather than telling someone at a later time about it.

I live with a schizophrenic and one of my friends has tourettes and the other is autistic, so I think I have got into the habit of not saying anything inappropriate about MI generally. I try to be supportive and non judgmental when people are facing challenges.

On the other side, yes, people have been condescending to me on occasion and in some cases offensive , but I put that down to ignorance. Where I can I hit on he positives of being MI, like having empathy for people doing it tough, I try and point that out.

Mostly people treat me with kindness and understanding especially when I have the opportunity to give them a snapshot of what I am really like, deep down. If they cant deal with my MI or am embarrassed by it, I find that they tend to drift away.

However this has happened to me rarely.

I think the best response to someone whether they say they are autistic, scizo, bipolar, whatever, "oh that must be really hard for you, is it? "

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

JUst a quote from DEpt of Health. Mental illness.

They are illnesses just like any other, such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma. Yet the traditions of sympathy, support, and flowers given to people with physical illnesses are often denied to those with a mental illness. One of the biggest obstacles for people recovering from mental illness is confronting the negative attitudes of other people. These often mean that people with mental illness face isolation and discrimination just for having an illness."

Did you look that up ?
Isn't it interesting that Department of Health write that people suffering mental illness are misunderstood and others have a negative attitude to them.

. Personally, Loopy, I can write yes, yes, I agree but to be honest,
not all the time.

for instance someone I know with MI pushes himself to be social. I always see him trying to be social like he goes to McDonald's for coffee every morning. I have seen people being nice to him.

what do you think ?
