What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

-karma- I suppose I am a softy at heart but I don't normally show iit when the situation calls for it, maybe I have just learned a new attitude. Thank you. Don't be so sharp with my comments but tread "softly softly"

Thank you.

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

kato, I met the Vets in a Psych clinic and they adopted me as an equal. they are all like blood brothers. I suppose because I had been through crap similar, in their minds, to them I was immediately part of their" family". We see each other about 5-7 times a year and never talk about our MI because we all know what each of us are about. But having said that, if one of us, need to talk, we all join in. Many hands make light work. The subject at hand is tossed around, with a couple of drinks, whatever they fancy, until he that is down actually sees some light that someone has said or has joined the dots. In relation to memory it is not unusual for me to see a painting or a picture, and to myself I will think, I know that place and whilst thinking about it some memories will come flooding back, including things that I had never thought of before. I have a strange mind. As forbyour last question I am always a bit edgy about meeting up but when I do there is so much feeling that I immediately feel " at home again". But it is extremely hard when it is time to say bye because you know that you are going back to the same old crap.

So it seems to me @Loopy from your posts that being in the company of peers is really helpful and healing for you? That sometimes words don't matter as its the recognition of a fellow traveller that allows acceptance of each other as people.
I like how you describe seeing your vietnam vet friends, it sounds as though a mutual replenishing of spirit occurs when you catch up. My hope is that we are also partaking in some of that reenishment via this forum..@kato I love reading your viewpoints too as we do all travel this road differently!

Sandy, it is sad for anybody who, when with your trusted one, feel totally safe, and then when you have to leave you once again fall into your old habits and lifestyle, like it or lump it, until once again when you meet. If I could only express in words just how I feel about the members of the discussion forum. All have been a boost to me and there is so much I would like to pass on but I am not sure that the subject is for this self help forum and I am not willing to try the words out, because I know that at least 60% would be shocked, horrified and possibly offended. I think I will remain as a back seat commenter, lol, and continue on the same line in the hope that some get as much from me as I have from others. THANK YOU ALL.

One of my greatest wishes is to meet, face to face some if not all of this forum. I know it is a dream but one that I truly wish would come true because there is so much wisdom from all that together we may in fact change societies view on MI.

Wish me luck. Really I am only going to type one letter then cut and paste. The result wil be very interesting. Those that do not respond within five days will be named and shamed on facebook, twitter, abc open and any where else that is an open forum. Well here goes nuffin.

Loopy please dont take my viewpoint as a reason to stop your own viewpoints I reread back thrpugh everything that transpired and can see kindred spirits with you. You are at a place further along then I am.
I enjoy hearing your thoughts and the banter back and forth coming to a realization for me that you are further along the journey then myself.
I hope one day to be in a position with others as you are now.
please don't rein back because of our discussion
I enjoyed your viewpoints

kato, I know you will, when it is your turn, but don't hold your breath. It is a long and arduous journey. I have not escape as yet but been able to manage my MI as best I can, but at my age a little bit of old wisdom steps in and attempts to bring you back. I am pleased that my ranting and raving is doing some good.

Thank you

Regards,

Loopy.

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

Dear Loopy,

I read your messages with interest and anjoyment. Like others on this forum, , like Allesandra1992 aka Sandy...., Kato, Karma, Hobbit, nik nik, Sherry Bomb, Mick giving, others that I apologise I have not included. Kirsten, phew...

As you know, its me that writes, get yourself a lived experience /carers copt of the state laws for your state. Stick the piece of paper, the state law in your Doctors hands, tell them to read it ....it is shows your rights in Law.

When you write to State people regarding mental health, of course they will arc up because of MAJORity of people are slow to change and everyone is restricted in what they truly want to say, so Loopy, for only concern on my part and also, I dont know if I am writing for anyone else, please dont mind if you do not get answers from others.
