What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

-karma-, I really wish I could remenber just what my life was like when I first "hit the wall" but I was a ealking talking Zombie, totally unaware of just what happened for the first three years, I was diagnosed in December 1989 and asw a shrink in 1990, I have no memory of anything but the job I loved and lived fo until it was taken from me due to no fault of mine. My memories of day to day last only for a while whilst I never forget what happened to me prior to MI. I can detail everything I did in the 17 years prior to breakdown, now my memory is cap. I forget names, faces places I have been since becomming sick and i am fed up with pretending just to try and remember. This forum is slowly dragging me out of the fog into a cloudy sky and given time I may even ee the sun and sky again. Yes my box of chocolates has a lid that I am unable to lift off.

kato, if you had followed my story to date one of the first things I mentioned was that I no longer understand just what love hate or anger mean, ask me about frustration and I will speak reems about it.

@Loopy

I appreciate everything you have just said,

i was just reading your post regarding your memory and that you can remember up until but then you are hazy about everything since,

That is extremely difficult to deal with, i know i struggle with memory and have no recollections from any age. unless something prompts me, be it conversation or a picture or sometimes not often a saying.

I am glad that we could talk openly about the differences people encounter and work towards.

How did you maintain friendships with your vet mates,

I have found that over the last couple of years i have closed out 99.9% of my friends and the .1% is my long time mate, who i only see every few months,

perhaps you could suggest something that might have helped you with this?

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

dear All,

I am so enjoying this conversation, thanks for the exciting inputs all.

what this reminds us all of is that We all have different stories and realities to what we all experience. for instance:

It's difficult Loopy@ sometimes not to be seen by others as aggressive (angry) because Everyone has a different experience on it. so, Loopy@ when you write, sometimes I guess we need to reread what has been written.

Perspnally, all my close friends know me and they forgive me but many other people who don't know me thnk I'm crazy

loopy@ I thnk your cool but can also write this knowing that I am very guilty of this.

Karma, I was thinking that too!
Loopy@ what do you think of the preparations for the anniversary of 100 years in Gallipoli?
do you feel that it will bring more focus on the Australians who fighted in different wars last century ?

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

justanothe47yr, Top of themorning, I would not care if they did not "forgive" me, it is their poor understanding of your illness and you should never need "forgiveness" after all you are not deliberatly sick.

Karma, I think of those brave men and women who did all they could, " For King am\nd Country, such a pity that they were stuffed up by the British Brass who landed them in a death trap, and it looks like we are going to face the same type on enemy again" and I am not being rascist" Religeous wars when will it all resolve it self. Unfortunately not in my ti me. Off the subject of being "loopy" again. I hope it brigs the message home that Australians are not to be messed with.

Kato, I am sorry if I sound a little sharp, but that is just me and no matter what I cannot change as uch as I try. Please do not take offence or to heart the things I say.

Warm regards.
