Re: medication and sudical thoughts

Yes, been on antidep for about 15 years. I still have to deal with a bit, but due to family history I have come to accept that it, SI, will be with me for life, as long as that is. For me it helps to differentiate between the thoughts ... passive and active SI. The pills dont really take the causes of the thoughts away. Some medication helps keep me functional and active. Too much turns me into a zombie and I figure the likelihood of me actually completing is higher. because I actually do have some self respect. I use a lot of CBT/DBT type skills to manage it. My obsession with suicide was VERY extreme but I have not made an attempt... but many plans. I try to interrupt the thoughts, say 'hi' and then 'bye' to them, I try to use symbolic acts to defuse the intensity.. cant really explain cos of forum guidelines. My last suicidal thought was this week ... but relatively minor and manageable. My last major flare up was around Sept Oct last year. When I was scared for my safety.

Re: medication and sudical thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 & hubby.

Anti-depressants have never stopped me from those type of thoughts for over 15 years. When things get bad I often feel the world would be better of without me & think/plan of different ways to leave it. While I have never attempted anything, even when I was at my worst, the thoughts do still come & go depending upon my mood.

I've never given much thought to really dealing with the thoughts probably because at least for now I believe I'm too much of a coward to actually do anything. Or maybe I'm strong enough not to act on them - that sounds better.

Take care both of you.

Thank you @Drac0,

Re: medication and sudical thoughts

Hi @Drac0,

I think this is a sign of strength, as you well know, it's not easy living with thoughts like this. Its good that you are able to reflect that the thoughts come and go as well, perhaps something you can hold onto during the more trying times.

Take care

Re: medication and sudical thoughts

I am hoping someone can offer suggestions here @Shaz51.

While for all these years I've managed to just carry on & keep going when they come around there is always the idea there that maybe, just maybe, one day it might take hold. It would be nice to have some strategies in place to deflect them or at least stop them taking over.

Take care.

Re: medication and sudical thoughts

The best I have come up with is to

note it, but try not to let it drop down ino my heart chakra/area ... if it is just cerebral ... it will wander away and other thoughts will replace it ...like the yoga or buddhist approach ... it tends to get less of a fix on my whole being and motivation ... I will talk at it ... "Oh there you are hanging around gain" "havent ou got eanything better to do"

I dont respond to it too preciously

Having said that .. I got an attack of suicidal thinking in choir on Sunday ... I could not focus on the singing ... and was tearing up ... I used to tear up in choir before but it wasnt necessarily triggered by SI.. this time it was ... that is apparently due to the body's unconscious response ... it does nt want me to hurt it ... ie ... me.

dont know if it makes sense ... I have struggled with clear Suicidal ideation since 1986 .... 30 years now ... I have never made an attempt ... but also written out my thoughts ... and plans sometimes ...

any other ideas ... anybody??
