OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi there

This is my first post . I'll try and make it brief.

I've had OCD for 30 years now and it involves constant visual distractions. I am always trying NOT to look at inappropriate (private) parts when talking to people and also my peripheral vison (eyes flicking back and forward) with people in the corner of my vision.

The peripheral vision problem may involve being distracted by people whenever they come into my field of view e.g at a cafe I must either face a wall where I can't see anybody or put an arm up to shield my eyes.

I remember the exact day in school (year 9) I was sitting in Geography class watching a documentary on the television and casually glanced at the crutch of the guy sitting to the right of me. I thought in my head that 'you can't look there!' and ever since that moment my staring/peripheral vision OCD has made life a struggle ever since.

As far as therapies are concerned , you name it and I have defintiely tried it, from psychiatrists to spiritual healers and all of the medications that that you can poke a stick at.

I had a break from traditional treatments for quite a number of years and tried the natural healing side of things, with the occasional visit to my GP for SRI scripts. At one stage I was borderline ready to give up on living entirely.

As a last resort I decided to reconnect with my psychiatrist to see if anything new regarding treatments had popped up. He told me there were not alot of options apart from the usual SRI medications .

Almost as an aside he mentioned that ADHD was closely related to OCD and that there can often be a combination of the two.

He told me there have been some success stories with the use of PRESCIBED STIMULANTS for some types of OCD. I was asked if I wanted to give it a try and after thinking about it for half a second I said 'yes'.

The following day I popped the new medication into my mouth and had my early morning walk with the dogs.

Roughly an hour later I noticed something I hadn't felt in 30 years.

Another dog walker was approaching and usually I would have strolled in the other direction as the thoughts and anxiety would overwhelm me.

But something had changed. It was as if an intencity volume switch had been turned down inside my head. I was able to make much better eye contact and felt a new internal confidence .

The level of intencity with the OCD thoughts had diminished quite a bit.

I have continued taking dthe stimulants everyday (morning and lunchtimes) ,I do not feel like I am on any medications at all, (not like some I have had in the past)

The new STIMULANT has helped my OCD more than any other medication.

I would say that the improvement is 50 to 60 % better, life is easier then it has been for many years.

I guess you could say the stimulant helps with the less intense OCD inducing environments ie going to the shops, walking in the park and general day to day engagements involving people.

Just thought I'd better let eveybody out there who suffers from a similar form of OCD that this new treatment helps me a lot and maybe it can help them also. I could not mention the name of the medication directly as per the rules of this forum.

Thanks and good luck

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Mel

This forum doesn't allow mention of medications . It's a stimulant treatment that in combination with other SRII medication can help general day to day situations where I have eye peripheral distractions from objects, people in my side vision and other annoying things,in addition to the not looking stuff.

Talk to your doctor about it , it's a treatment for 'Cormorbid ocd and adhd', although it doesn't have as much effect on OCD/ADHD in social situations or formal instances where 'normal' eye contact amd 'normal' behaviour is expected.

Tends to help me get on with things and not dwell so much on the self hatred stuff.

Good luck

Hi Mell

Hope you are doing ok.

The moderators for this forum won't allow me to mention the particular stimulant medication in combination with a common sri treatment that helps me in less formal and general day to day situations.

Please talk to your phsychiatrist. It is used for the treatment of comorbid ocd/adhd , I'm sure they know about it.

Good luck and stay strong. New approaches to treatment are happening all the time.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hey I thought I was the only one in the world you know I am really happy to find people who are encountering the same problems as I am. I believe I can open my heart and share without being judged .

I would be really happy that you pliz tell me the steps you took aswell as medication pliz😢 , it's really hard .ever since I started starring at this other girl on her crotch back in 2012 in high school hasn't stopped until now . I am working as an intern at an engineering firm now and its really hell , i am an really scared that I would be fired for starring people in the crotch looking at them akwardly including my boss
I am avoiding my family as much as I can and only 23 years of age it's really hectic, now my family think I am a monster or something because I don't wanna spend tym wth them

Even typing this I I ddnt know where to start because I wanna say so much.

May pliz pliz help me pliz

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Kith

As mentioned I'm not allowed to talk about medications on this forum.

I totally understand what you describe, I have identical issues.(like what you mentioned)

It is a very diificult OCD to talk about because of the awkward subject matter. (initial staring at innappropriate / crotch area ) that is a very 'normal' thing for a teenager to worry about. But OCD seems to grab onto the thought and accentuate it in neon lights for everyone to see and dislodging it from our thinking becomes the obsession.

Please know that the stimulant only helps the adhd aspect of the eye issues and helps with concentration. Along with the sri medication ,I found they work well together (for me)

It's important that you speak to your psychiatrist and try cognitive behavioral therapy (helps for some)

While you are still young it's very important to try and get on top of it as soon as possible ,back when I was in high school they knew nothing about it and my family didn't 'want' to know about it .

Don't give up hope ,I understand it's very difficult and extremely frustrating.

Hands up shielding face in class and sitting in the back far corner of the room (peripheral vision) and eye contact ahead at teacher is hard, Avoiding meetings (pick out people in the meeting that may notice you and affect the ocd eye stuff , trying to not look like you are trying to look ) Just wanting to be 'normal' and behave 'normally'.Office environments are very hard work , hopefully you have a seat facing the wall in the corner with shelving blocking the peripheral view of anyone within your vision.

Walking into a room and not knowing where to look. Conversations with more than one person are hard , the person looking on (not talking) is the object of the ocd behaviiour and peripheral distraction.(same issue at dinner table etc)

Worst of all I find are the reactions I get from others responding to me like I'm the creepiest guy on the planet. (when I'm the polar opposite) It's like the reaction (rejection , judgement as 'creepy') that the OCD wants to give me that causes the symptoms/behaviours.

A Merry Go Round of continuous thoughts. It feels as though we have to find a way to trick the brain into thinking the opposite way.

I can relate to it all ,I'm sure you have similar issues.

Know that there are others out there like you and try to control the self hatred .(not easy)

Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you might have , new discveries in treatment are always happening . There is an ocd specialist treatment centre based at the Melbourne Clininc .One of the only specialst treatment centers in the country. Might be worth calling them to see what the latest approach is.

Remember you are NOT alone. Good luck mate and take care.

Stay strong and never give up on yourself.

All the best

Hi Sahil

Got your email but can't find the link on this forum.Hope you get this message.

I did try a version of Cognitive therapy ages ago , seemed to aggravate more than anything (for me)

The co morbid OCD ( ADHD ) is still strong but the medication mentioned helps a bit with my day to day mood and 'getting on ' with things. Helps with minor day to day tasks and concentration issues . (newish medication is a little random as to how much it helps from one day to this next)

Hope life is good. take care.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

On this forum I'm not allowed to mention specific types of tablet ) , your doctor would know the medication . (ADHD stimulant and srii together)

Also the medication only helps some areas as mentioned and effectivenees can vary from day to day .

I don't think this forum allows me to send contact details .

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi All,

Thank you Tyler for sharing your OCD struggles.

It made me want to share my own journey too.

I have the same issue - staring at private parts / and peripheral vision - for quite long.

After 1 year of suffering, I went on medication - psychiatrist diagonsed it as - obsessive fear psychosis - and then gave some medication. It comes under the category of ssri medication (you can google these - best to visit a psyicatrist for the right one).

The medications worked fine, lessened the problem considerably.

It enabled me to work. I have been taking it for more than a decade now - no side effects as such I think.

My life - though not completely normal - still was good.

But now I want to improve more - as I realise till I don't fight it - it will continue to curtail my goals; limiting it more and more.

And for the first time - I really want to get rid of the OCD considerably.

So the first thing I recently did - I got the following books on OCD - you can check them out on Amazon

a) The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook b) Brain Lock c) Stop Obsessing d) Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

All the books are good, though you can ignore - Brain Lock.

Some things I learnt in the books -

1) For the first time - books made me realise - that the more you avoid the stressful situations - the greater your OCD monster will become. (I think this is what we all have been doing!)

2) It made me aware of the concept of - Exposure and Response Prevention.

3) The books also make a point - that medication in initial stages (at least) - will help, as it will reduce the associated depression. One of the authors refers to use of medication as 'taking sidewings'; when you start to learn swimming, the hand support you tie to yourself. In other words, medication will help, especially in the initial stages.

4) They also talk of imagery exposure - creating a audio tape - wherein you imagine the feared consequences happening if you don't do your compulsion, etc.

5) All the books have a chapter on medication too - listing the different medications available. But again better to take guidance of a psychiatrist on the same.

NONE of the above 4 books - however has a section on 'OCD Staring'. Except for a 3-page section in the book - Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. However there also the author doesn't deal with it satisfactorily. (Basically the author suggestion is to 'sneakily look at privates' - in other words - have 'control' on your thinking / giving it a focus - instead of letting it run amok / uncontrollably)

The books however gives a good view on how to approach OCD. Plus they have sample imagery scripts which will help in dealing with it.

If you don't want to read lengthly books - the following url link - conveys a doctor's opinion (and the process that is suggested in the books also) on how to fight the OCD Staring issue.

There is this other link also which is good.

http://laocdtreatment.com/answer-to-nina-about-compulsive-staring-at-privates/

I will be now working on the suggestions in the above links with the help of a trained counsellor. Hope to recover.

Thanks again all for coming forth. Let us fight it together.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi all,

i like to share my experience too.
Now i feel good with medication .
i have OCD which is forcing me to keep looking at private parts of others.the first thing we should know is OCD is an anxiety disorder .The compulsive thoughts are occurring due to our anxiety.for example ...if we stand before a women and thought ...what will happen if i keep look into that women's face or any other parts...when this thought of anxiety occurs ...the compulsive thought will come after that moment to keep look into that women's body parts. So i realised that its occurring due to anxiety ...so i treated my anxiety first...doctor prescribed me the tablets for anxiety which is very low in dose (just 5mg) ...when i started to take that medicine ...i got good sleep in night...in the had panic attacks, repetative thoughts and mild social anxiety ...its all gone now...So what i want to tell is we have the solution in our mind ...we should believe that we can overcome OCD...all problems are starting from our negative thoughts... Once i started to take that medicine i got guts to face the problems and i started to thought positive in every thing...so the solution for our problem is in our mind ...fear..anxiety...its all coming from our negtive thoughts...if we thing "OCD is a problem in our brain we should take medicine to cure that problem"...that won't work ...especially in our type OCD ...for example...if we are facing a women in front of us we should thout that "nothing will happen by looking at a women,i can do to not keep looking at her face or private parts"...for creating that thought we should overcome our anxiety first by taking medication.. Once the anxiety gone ,80% of the problem will be solved.the lifting of OCD may feel very hard by taking medicine at some moments..but its very common to happen before your OCD is lifted...so my advise is
1.overcome your anxiety with or with out medication.
2.just take the medication and face your fearful sutiation repeatedly until your anxiety is lifted.
3.choose the ssri which gives no side effects (such as lack of sleep).take it only from low dose (50 mg).
4.Do not fight with the obsessive thoughts of ocd you have it will worse your condition...fight with the anxiety you have ...just learn to relax the mind. just thought" nothing will happen wrong".
You people may think that its easy to say but hard to do it but i will say its just your negative thought its not true all people with ocd can do overcome their anxiety but they are stucked by their thought of anxiety.we should overcome the thought of anxiety at first.Ocd is also called as doubting decease you will doubt evry time..its natural that you're doubting your cure from ocd.if you thought you can't its not true just neglect that thought ,actually you can overcome your ocd by overcoming your anxiety and medication.
