OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi there

This is my first post . I'll try and make it brief.

I've had OCD for 30 years now and it involves constant visual distractions. I am always trying NOT to look at inappropriate (private) parts when talking to people and also my peripheral vison (eyes flicking back and forward) with people in the corner of my vision.

The peripheral vision problem may involve being distracted by people whenever they come into my field of view e.g at a cafe I must either face a wall where I can't see anybody or put an arm up to shield my eyes.

I remember the exact day in school (year 9) I was sitting in Geography class watching a documentary on the television and casually glanced at the crutch of the guy sitting to the right of me. I thought in my head that 'you can't look there!' and ever since that moment my staring/peripheral vision OCD has made life a struggle ever since.

As far as therapies are concerned , you name it and I have defintiely tried it, from psychiatrists to spiritual healers and all of the medications that that you can poke a stick at.

I had a break from traditional treatments for quite a number of years and tried the natural healing side of things, with the occasional visit to my GP for SRI scripts. At one stage I was borderline ready to give up on living entirely.

As a last resort I decided to reconnect with my psychiatrist to see if anything new regarding treatments had popped up. He told me there were not alot of options apart from the usual SRI medications .

Almost as an aside he mentioned that ADHD was closely related to OCD and that there can often be a combination of the two.

He told me there have been some success stories with the use of PRESCIBED STIMULANTS for some types of OCD. I was asked if I wanted to give it a try and after thinking about it for half a second I said 'yes'.

The following day I popped the new medication into my mouth and had my early morning walk with the dogs.

Roughly an hour later I noticed something I hadn't felt in 30 years.

Another dog walker was approaching and usually I would have strolled in the other direction as the thoughts and anxiety would overwhelm me.

But something had changed. It was as if an intencity volume switch had been turned down inside my head. I was able to make much better eye contact and felt a new internal confidence .

The level of intencity with the OCD thoughts had diminished quite a bit.

I have continued taking dthe stimulants everyday (morning and lunchtimes) ,I do not feel like I am on any medications at all, (not like some I have had in the past)

The new STIMULANT has helped my OCD more than any other medication.

I would say that the improvement is 50 to 60 % better, life is easier then it has been for many years.

I guess you could say the stimulant helps with the less intense OCD inducing environments ie going to the shops, walking in the park and general day to day engagements involving people.

Just thought I'd better let eveybody out there who suffers from a similar form of OCD that this new treatment helps me a lot and maybe it can help them also. I could not mention the name of the medication directly as per the rules of this forum.

Thanks and good luck

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi @Tyler01 you mentioned about a year ago you started a new stimulant(meds) that helped you with your OCD/ADHD. Im new to this forum and im not sure if there is a direct msg option. Are u able to inform me about how this stimulant works, i do unstand forum guideline to not share such info however, i am going through the same thing for the past 4 years and it has intensified over the years. I am afraid to enter the work environment and even afraid i might not get a job as an attorney due to interviewers feeling uncomfortable around me. It would be of great help if i am able to try this stimulant. Additionally, how did you 'come out' and explain to your close family members, its distressing as i cant even have a conversation anymore without the OCD kicking in. I am an extrovert person but in recent years i dont go out and engage in social relationships because of my fear of humiliation. Thank you for sharing you story, it gives me hope!

Hi @Legalmind0214

The benefits of the stimulant did wear off after around 5 months.(for me)

Some things may help you that might not help another or vice versa.

Initially my eye contact was improved and general day to day tasks in public were less affected by visual distraction.

I do understand that some people take time off the stimulant meds and restart them again to help it work or rejuvenate.

I have recently tried TMS (Trans magnetic stimulation) which involved (20+10) 30 treatments over week period as an inpatient. (3 weeks + 1 week)

Benefits were (for me) short and obvious but disappered pretty quickly. This treatment does help some OCD people (apparently) but not in my case. It was a massive committment for small benefit.(in my case)

I am now taking a medication that is usually used for Alzheimers patients and it has shown to have beneift so far. I think this is a later option if all other roads have been tried.(ie treatment resistent OCD)

Try and find a speciaist OCD doctor in your area and they may be able to direct you to some other treatment options.

There are many options that help some people alot. Don't give up or be too hard on yourself.

Also, eye exercises in the morning (look left right left right for 30 minutes) help to get the brain hemispheres working together and seems to help the visual ocd stuff a bit.

Good luck mate, it's not easy.

Hi @Mohsin

As mentioned above the stimulant meds unfortunately wore off after around 5 months. (in my case)

This forum doesnt allow me to mention the name of the medication.

The stimulants are commonly used for adhd patients.

It would be best to speak to your doctor to get more information.

Good luck with everything and take care.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Same 😞 I don't think its that uncommon in 7 billion people tho. I think I will find an OCD in probably less than a year and medication. I think most people would not fear if they looked at somone's private part. Our barin is now wired that every person you see thats the first thing you see ad you fear it so much. So avoid it backfiring. Blinking helps and thinking to yourself that it is normal to look because it is and everyone looks. Thank you @Tyler01 Good Luck to you too hope 100% recovered. How many percent now? Btw you should join facebook group "OCD starring eye contact difficulty obsessive staring stare disorder anxiety" c:
