GROW Support Groups

GROW Support Groups

Since being diagnosed with BiPolar I found the BiPolar Australia website which had a list of support groups.

Where I live there are only GROW Groups.

I've tried two meetings and was unsure whether I am gaining value. I find it very philosophy and mantra driven and, while my faith has been rocky through my experience, for me I should be finding this in the bible. I also just don't find that I fit within the group dynamic. Have others tried GROW? What was your experience?

(As a side note, I've also since discovered with further research that BiPolar Australia (on appearance) is operated by one family, so I'm unsure of their content.)

Re: GROW Support Groups

Hi @Rayzed_Edge. I was in GROW for a bit over a year. In that time, I became more sick from the effort of having to work with a group that just wanted to use it as a social club. To be fair, though, GROW is a great support group when run properly. I love the program itself - it was certain individuals that added to my trauma.

GROW is both a program that encourages personal growth and a support group. Mostly you put the work in yourself but in a supportive atmosphere. It is NOT a social club nor a place to go if you are wanting an intimate relationship.

After my experiences in GROW, the organisation’s CEO actually suggested I try joining in the forum here. GROW gels with some people and that’s just the way life works. Interestingly, it was originally started by a priest, so it does fit with people who have a spiritual belief, although it is very inclusive of anyone. It will also take more than two meetings to get benefit from the program. But it does sound like it just wasn’t the right “fit” for you, and that is totally okay. It is, after all, your personal journey.

If people have any quiries about GROW, I’m happy to try to answer them, or you can go direct to the GROW website. I hope that what I have said doesn’t stop others from giving GROW a go.

Re: GROW Support Groups

I found the experience with Grow overwhelming and not the right fit for me. There was some big personalities who would argue their point and not listen to others. I realised that my anxiety levels were getting worse and did not return.

I have known people who find Grow excellent for their journey in recovery which is great, but not for me.

it took a while to find my feet after my experience but joined a local social club which has been positive experience

Hi @Ma60. I’m glad you found what you were looking for in your social club. I know that your experience is quite common, especially in my area. Sometimes you have to choose your battles.

Just an out-there question for everyone, does anyone in the forum family have a good personal experience from GROW? Was just wondering.

Re: GROW Support Groups

@Rayzed_Edge.
I joined a Grow group in a nearby town a year or so ago. Attended a few sessions but found it wasn't a good fit.
But im going to try a different grow group in a different town. Sometimes I think it's about the people in the group and how you feel you fit with that group of people.
Is there another Grow group you could try?
As I've heard many positive reports from others who have joined Grow.

Re: GROW Support Groups

Hi @Annabelle4, @Ma60 and @utopia,

Thank you for your feedback and I'll certainly take it into account.

The group meets on a Monday but I've found the last two weeks that I'm really tired by Friday and I'd be better having that day off.

To try another group would mean travelling after work to a suburb in the opposite direction to home.

I've managed to find a copy of the Blue Book online if I need to consult it in future.
