Dealing with Difficult Relatives

Dealing with Difficult Relatives

How do you deal with potentially toxic relatives? To me, I feel like they're taking advantage of me and my current condition. They keep asking me to look after the house and feed the animals while they're away. I don't get paid for it, and they only tell me about their trips at the last minute, putting me on the spot and leaving me no option but to say yes. Meanwhile they don't make an effort to spend time with me, which is making me feel left out and alone.

I've tried to let my feelings be known about the whole situation, but of course I'm now the "bad-guy" because I've tried to stand up for myself. Trying to communicate my feelings is really difficult for me, because I don't want to bother people with them. But no matter which way I look at it, I still feel like I am more of a convenience than part of the family.

I'm now crying and depressed, I feel really bad for saying something and I simply don't know how to socialize or interact with my relatives without getting hurt. I'm seriously considering cutting them out of my lives, but that will put me in a worse-off position, because I live with them, and I really don't have anywhere else to go. 😞

@EternalFlamecan understand not wanting to end up worse off.

I guess this is all the harder because it is family.

Yes, it is.

But sometimes, you have to cut ties even with some of your own family, but if it has to be done in order for me to keep my sanity, then so be it. It's not the decision that I want to make, but if my sister and I can't resolve our issues, then I'm afraid that's the only choice I'll have.

Re: Dealing with Difficult Relatives

Hi @EternalFlame,

This does sound like a very emotionally triggering and generally stresful situation. A double whammy of the pain of feeling disconnected from the people you love, or would hope to love, as well as the very practical urgency of needing a safe place to live.

It definitely sounds like leaving is a good option and Im glad to hear that you are visiting agencies to get support for this. The only extra possibility that I thought could be possibly be something to think about, is wether any final decsions regarding your relationship with your family needs to be made at this stressful juncture. While living together clearly isnt working out, there might be a way to find a level of connection with your family, when the challenges of cohabitating are removed. I wonder if its possible to try and put the question of wether you want to stay connected to your family temporarily on hold, while you sort out a more sustainable place to live, and carve out some thinking time for yourself, and them.

Re: Dealing with Difficult Relatives

Hello @Former-Member,

I've thought about what I'm going to do about my relationship with my relatives once I move out of their place, and it has occurred to me that we'll probably go our separate ways. I've realised over the last couple weeks that they never really made an effort to be a part of my life when I wasn't living there, and even while living there they never really tried to have a proper relationship with me. They would never include me in family activities, or even be bothered with walking from one end of the house to the other to even talk to me. So the relationship will most likely go back to being non-existant when I do completely move out.

Hello @Shaz51, sorry I haven't been around the forums of late.

I'm actually feeling better since I left my sister's place, like a burden has been lifted from my shoulders.

It has been decided that I should move out of my sister's place. Her behaviour towards me is toxic and I have no tolerance for it. I will most likely cut ties with her as well, as I now know that she has no interest in putting in the effort to have a decent relationship with me.

I've decided to not worry about all this stuff going on between me and her. I'm leaving it to the powers above, and hopefully something good will come my way. 🙂
