Access to Mental Health Help

Access to Mental Health Help

HI All,

I know specifics cant be shared but Im just wondering if anyone can tell me a little about access to mental health services that are either cheap or free. I have depression, anxiety, EDNOS and BPD (the previous MH nurse I dealt with believes only traits perhaps not a full diagnosis).

I understand that through a GP I can access 10 sessions with a psychologist through medicare? Is that correct? And thats just in a year - is that correct?

Im just trying to work out what I can and cant afford but at the same time how best to access assistance.

I am in Tasmania if that makes any difference. I recently removed from Outback NSW.

Cheers.

This response liely to not sit well with contemporary humans. But in an ideal world there would be avenues to get help to gently euthanise oneself. So one could go to sleep gently and know it was all over.

Obviously that doesnt happen.

I like God, and I appreciate the solace he gives my Mum and anyone. I regret my comment, was nasty and I didnt realise you werent talking to me anyway. I get more stupid when stressy.

pick up the phone and have a chat to lifeline (13 11 14) and call them as much as you need to. I have said a prayer for you too.

right, try lifeline online counselling, beyondblue online counselling and any other online counselling you feel comfortable trying. headspace counselling is for young people but you can try their site too.

Hi Cherrybomb, i know i'm a bit of a wise, caring pain-in-the-butt but I would like to add that in addition to GOD (NOT 'religion') I 'believe' in diet and exercise (in fact, I am eating pizza right now. hee hee!) and medication, as well as socialising, work, and Lifeline etc. I know I'm a 'smart-butt' but OF COURSE medication, diet and exercise are important for any person's well-being. We Australians are NOT stupid and it's about time we remembered that. Hee hee!

Re: Access to Mental Health Help

@abrepeat I too have recently been though the MH system. 4 times on the last 12 months. every time it gets worse. The worst bit is the ED where they treat you like a nut bar until a mental health unit nurse comes and assesses you then sends you up to the ward for 'rest and recuperation'. Sadly this wasn't the case for me. I have BPD but been given many diagnoses over the years including schizophrenia, bipolar and ADHDwhich I do not have. They dosed me accordingly and labelled me as 'problematic' when I reacted badly to the new meds.
I grew up in a strict catholic family where you showed no emotion and respected your elders, even when there was an element of abuse and neglect. I'm not close to my family as a result and still find it hard to talk about me feelings 20 years after I got kicked out of home. I've tried lifeline and sometimes they can be a bit hot and miss but on the whole they are good. Some even let you vent without interrupting you! Always feel welcome here on the forum I know I do 😊
