Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder

My partner is currently in re-hab for drug and alcohol addiction but i believe he also has Borderline Personality Disorder. I realise i have no professional experience to diagnose but having read extensively on the subject i believe he has this condition. I guess i'm really looking for advice on what to do next. When i spoke to him on Christmas Eve he was abusive and therefore i didn't visit him for Christmas because i believe i must set limits so that i dont get hurt and also to not enable this behaviour. I haven't spoken to him for a week but have sent two letters. I don't know what to do next. Do i just keep writing? He hasn't tried to call me or written yet although the phone is his preferred method of communication. I still love him and want to be with him when he leaves re-hab but i'm afraid of the trauma that he inflicted on me before he went to rehab and the anger in his voice on the last phonecall. Do i suggest to his counsellor in the re-hab that I would like a meeting? Do i leave him to work on his d and A issues and leave his relationship issues till later? Any suggestions from people who have experienced anything similar are greatly appreciated.

Re: Borderline Personality Disorder

It is a relief to read all the posts on Borderline Personality Disorder. Seems to be so complex. My daughter has been diagnosed with it and has done the therapy group which helped her enormously, however, since stopping she has regressed. I think those with the illlness need regular ongoing support and I suggested she asked her pyschologist if this was possible but she has not even been attending those appointments.

As a result I have a very angry daughter particularly with me. I have had to push her away due to my total inability to cope with the onslaught. I will get back in touch with her but for now I have to believe that she will be okay while I take a much needed breather from the crazyness that goes with this illness.

I was beating myself up for not handling it as well as I thought I should but I have to know my own limitations and for now I have found them. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest and I hope it helps others in some way.

Hi Olly,

You really can't beat yourself up over how you handle this. Many therapists are not or mildly aware of the condition and lots of them end up refusing to see the patients because they are so hard to deal with. Sof trained professionals have trouble, you and I should be praised for even trying in my view.

Some of the information on BPD family has been helpful to me. As laways though, read with caution as it's never going to be a substitute for years of experience and training.

Good luck mate.

Sometimes it is impossible to handle but last night I got a call from her wanting to make peace. We are now planning Mothers day together. Such is the difficulty of this condition. In this moment of total sanity we tell each other that we love one another and just keep trying to navigate the course. My husband has more trouble getting through it though as he feels protective of me.

My daughter has recently been diagnosed with BPD, we have been on a never ending spiral leading up to this.

I'm hoping she will actively engage in therapy as I know she doesn't want to continue to love her life on such a roller coaster.
