@utopia
hey luv
how has your day been? im so drained atm, exhausted and scared. hate feeling like this. so worried about my mum luv. and i know im thinking too much, i just feel consumed by it. and its breaking my heart - she is my best friend and i love her so much but im scared she is showing signs of dementia. i hope to god i am wrong.
i spoke to my sister today though and she was doing some cooking for me and mum which is really nice. plus she is going to come over this week and help me at home. im waiting to hear back from mental health clinic tomorrow to let me know when mum can be admitted.
i just wish this was all a bad dream.
took mum to gp today - her bp was perfect. however, one of the meds she is on for her bp is causing her ankles to swell which is upsetting me. i know that it is most important to get her bp under control but just wish it didnt happen at the expense of swelling.
sorry for being such a downer this evening luv, just really struggled today.
i hope you have had a good day. what have you been up to? how is your son?

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI
It's good that her bp is reading normal today. It might have been a temporary one off low bp the other day. I hope that's the case.
My mums cognitive and memory function is shot. She forgets heaps if things. But it's not dementia. It is her other illnesses that put too much strain on her and her brain just can't keep up. A bit like me when I'm in a depressive episode - my mind doesn't function properly.
A good thing to get checked when someone appears confused or forgetful, is their urine. A UTI (urinary tract infection) can cause those same confused forgetful symptoms.
Add in that her mental health is not back to her normal state yet, and I guess she would be confused.
Doesn't stop it from scaring you or causing you to worry. That's a normal reaction. But it's important not to focus on this too much (hard when you have anxiety I know) until you know the diagnosis for a fact.
Why is she going back into hospital when she only came out about 2 weeks ago? Has she deteriorated? Has her psych said he wants her in hospital?
Great to hear your sister is following through on her promise to help you. Sounds like she's cooking up a few dishes, so you might be able to freeze some and have them on the day you are supee tired. Like tonight.
I wish there waa something I could do or say to help you tonight. But unfortunately I don't have that elusive magic wand we all wish for.
Try and have a nice dinner. Drink lots of water. And can you listen to some relaxing music for a while before you go to bed? It might help rake the focus away from your thoughts.
I'm here if you need to talk. Hugs for you and mum. ♥♡♥♡

@utopia
hey sweetheart, sorry i havent been in touch the past couple of days. ive been really stressed and struggling with mum. feeling calmer today though. thank you for checking up on me *mwah*
yeah, her bp came down but the medication they gave her at the hospital has caused swelling in her feet (which i knew it would because she has had a similar bp med with the same side effect but the idiots at the hospital still chose to give it to her - grrr) ... anyway she is now off that med and they are monitoring her bp at the mental health clinic.
aaw i feel for your mum. it sucks getting old. my mum is 73. how old is your mum? and it is so hard when they have so many different medical conditions. i think that plays on my mum's mind a lot (especially as she has chronic kidney disease) and she cant do all the things she used to. poor luv. since her stroke in january 2017 her health has declined.
yep, i know about the symptoms of a UTI in the elderly - its crazy what can happen to them. plus my mum doesnt get any burning sensation so we dont know when she has one or not! i bought a kit from the chemist that i can use to see if she has a UTI.
and its been hard for me, obviously emotionally, seeing mum the way she is. you know what upset me though? i went past my uncle's place last night and i felt like my aunt and uncle were ganging up on me. i told them i was struggling with what was going on, and i think any person in my position would be experience the same emotions . my uncle said im not coping because of my depression. it just hurt cause ive been doing the best i can to keep it together and everything just got on top of me - yes, i battle depression but i do a damn lot in spite of it! i wanted some support but felt like i was being put down cause i battle with mental illness. my uncle doesnt understand mental illness. other stuff was said but i felt worse when i left than when i got there. and i was feeling pretty distraught when i got there cause mum had just been admitted into the clinic. it made realise that i need to do this. my aunt and uncle can be quite judgemental, ie if i do thinks differently to how they would, it sh*ts them. i dont need to answer to someone. yes, i wanted support but i dont want to be judged. im going to see my counsellor tomorrow at carers wa and see one of the advisors there to get some information on services i can access.
the reason she was admitted back to the clinic is because she wasnt doing well back at home. last time she was in the psych didnt change her meds. he has changed her meds. the thing is, last time she was in the clinic she seemed to improve but then when she came home, it didnt continue. and she has been funny towards me. im hoping coming home to me isnt upsetting her. another thing that crossed my mind is that mum cant do what she used to do and i wonder if she gets triggered when she is at home as it may be a constant reminder for her of what she cant do ... then again i could be analysing too much ... im good at that! lol
my sister came over today with some cooked meals, and helped me with some house chores. the company was also nice 🙂
im lying here watching bachelor in paradise - dont judge me though lol! one of the guys has crazy eyes - scares me hehe
ok, so thats me hehe ... how have you been keeping? you been okay luv? what have you been up to?
gimme the goss!

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI
Glad your mum has gone back to hospital and she will be looked after until her health improves again.
Great to hear your sister came around and helped with the chores and her cooking. Did you stock the freezer with her meals?
So sorry that your uncle and aunty aren't supportive at all. It is very hard when our family members chose not to know about our mental illness. To get an understanding of it. Bet they'd want you to understand if they had an illness.
It sounds like they are never going to be the people you go to for support. Does your mum have any other brothers or sisters? Would / are they more supportive?
To me your relatives were rude to even mention your depression. Were they trying to blame you for your mum needing hospital again? Or were they trying to say, your mum wouldn't have to go to hospital if you didn't have depression? Either way I'd be furious. I'm amazed you are taking it as calmly as you are.
I hate it when the doctors don't listen to us with regards to what medicines not to give our mums. They assume because they are a doctor, that they know more than our mums do about their own bodies. Or us, as their advocate. I've fought with many doctors before on behalf of my mum. From not giving her a medication that I've told them she is allergic to. To not trying to take blood from her inner elbow (blood can't be got there) eyc etc. I generally scream until someone else comes to take over.
My mum is 66. But she's been sick for over 25 years. Before that she was full of energy and life. So it's hard to see them as smaller versions of themselves.
Took my son to his first soccer training of the season. He's playing for a different team this year than previous years. But I could see how rapt he was to be out playing in a team again today. We didn't think we'd find a team for him to join, after his original team decided not to play this year. So my boys happy. That makes me happy.
I was meant to see my psychiatrist this Friday. But my uncles are now coming up here on Friday to help get my garden into order. So I've had to reschedule with the psychiatrist for the following Friday. Disappointing.
I've pretty much just been taking things slow and easy.
At this atage I'm guessing it's too soon to predict how long your mum may be in hospital. But hopefully, you can try and relax a bit while she's there. Do something nice for yourself. You deserve it.

Hey luv … haha … if you’re watching that MaFS show you are in no position to judge 😛 I swore I wasn’t going to watch bachelor but I watched it on the weekend when I needed something brain numbing to do and have been watching it since … fortunately, I don’t go as far as yelling at the screen though. Haha so true – lots of idiots out there and yes, you do realise how normal you actually are, compared to a lot of these ones going onto reality shows. 5 mins of fave, hey?
Thanks luv, I do hope mum’s mental health improves. I don’t think she will come the same as she was before she started going downhill, as I do think there may be an onset of dementia, im not sure. That is my biggest concern at the moment, and how to deal with it long term. I guess in my naive world, I didn’t think mum would deteriorate more as things were going well. also, ive just put those thoughts out of my head – I haven’t wanted to think about it. But then I get a big slap in the face when something does happen. and I know I should prepare myself for things that may happen with mum but I don’t want to think about it because it makes it too real and scares me too much. We all have our coping strategies, sometimes healthy, sometimes not.
Yes, my sister made me some chicken cutlets, lamb cutlets, pasta and sauce. I think it was good for her too as it gave her a purpose. She is currently waiting on the disability pension so is in limbo at the moment.
Thanks luv, I was surprised that my uncle and aunty said the things they did. And no, unless I do things their way, I don’t feel as though they have my back. And that is something I have seen in the past. I was very emotional last night and I told them I cant just flick a switch and turn my emotions off. This is who I am – im watching my mum go downhill so of course it is going to affect my adversely – add to that my lack of sleep and exhaustion. From where they were sitting it is as though I should have been handling it better, and if it wasn’t for my depression, I would have been handling it better. That’s what they were saying luv. and I was offended they said that. I have done so much for mum, with battling my own demons at the same time, so for them to come out and say that wasn’t fair. In fact, ive had to work so much harder, mentally, to keep myself going as I care for mum and myself so for them to say because of my mental health issues im not coping is a crock of sh*t .. sorry luv, had to get that out.
Yes, my mum has an older brother but his wife is in a nursing home and my mum’s older sister has dementia – she still lives at home but has 5 adult children that care for her.
I have decided I need to be more resourceful and find out what I need to do. I told my sister that either she is in this for the long haul with me or nothing as I need support. I think she understands.
Sounds like you understand where I am coming from when it comes to hospital doctors. they irk me. they see a patient for 5 mins and start messing around with medications, not knowing their full history. I will go over their heads sometimes though and contact mum’s specialist to run it past him hehe … we are the ones that know our mums best and we know their history, and side effects when it comes to medications. It is very frustrating. I have a typed list of all of mum’s current medications and I have detailed the medications she cant take – seriously I couldn’t make it any simpler for them. the reason I am very weary when it comes to hospital doctors is because last year one of the docs at public hospital ceased one of mum’s medications abruptly (when it should have been done slowly)… she was discharged and ended up back in hospital 2 days later with heart palpitations (because the med was ceased suddenly) . since then, I no trust any of them! it’s a nightmare isn’t it? especially when you have to get to the point where you get p*ssed off cause they wont listen! Although, one compliment ive had from a few nurses is that they think I have a medical background or I am a nurse myself because of my knowledge. I tell them its cause I take care of all of mum’s medical stuff, so naturally im going to pick something up! Well you would hope I would anyway hehe
Aaw your mama was so young when she had you! youre 48 yeah? So she would have only been 18. My mama was married at 18. Had my sister at 25, my brother when she was 26 (he passed away in a car accident when he was 21) and me at 33. Do you have any brothers or sisters? My dad also passed away 15 years ago.
It is hard to see our mums as smaller versions of themselves, and it must be so hard for them, poor luvs. Life can be cruel sometimes cant it? we sometimes feel helpless which I hate even more.
Ooh awesome for your son – so glad he enjoyed his soccer training session. Such a mama you are – when your boy’s happy, you’re happy! 😊 did you play sports when you were at school? I used to play netball – oh I loved that sport. If it wasn’t for my rheumatoid arthritis I think I would still be playing it but its too harsh on my knees.
Oh sweets, im sorry that you had to cancel your psych appt. how often do you see them? It helps seeing them, yeah? Do you also do psychotherapy with your psych or is it predominantly management of your medication?
How’s your reading going? I wish I could get stuck into a good book. I don’t know what happens, I just don’t last hehe
Im not sure how much longer mama will be in hospital. Just day by day at this stage. I feel bad saying it, but I get respite when she’s not here. I also think I wont go tomorrow so she can rest and hopefully interact with some of the other people there. And have a break from me. I will go there on Friday though.
Tonight I just chilled on the sofa, watched bachelor in paradise and caught up on messages on sane, ooh and had some lasagne for dinner 😊 yummy yummy!
Sorry for the novel luv. I just get on a role sometimes ! but you’ve probably noticed that 😉
look forward to hearing from you

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI
The nbr of times the doctors have almost made my mum die - jeez. They don't listen. And yes we do pick up a lot of medical knowledge along the way. But my mum has a few conditions that are rare - or not so commonly known about by ED doctors. I told one doctor that if he attempted to touch my mum again with the needle, that I would break his arm. A nurse came and told the doctor to leave, and then she took over and did what needed to be done, the safest way for my mum.
Yep mum had me at 19. My brother at 17. My sister at 23. All far to early if you ask me. But on the positive, she was done with parenting by her early 40's. So that's when she got to go out and listen to bands and dance the night away. Often we would go out together to hear the bands - cos I was 20 by then.
My dad passed away 18 years ago. Am relieved. He suffered a lit if trauma and his PTSD was so severe. He was on super strong medications that would make him zombie like.
Except for my teen years, I've always had a good relationship with my mum. And she has helped me so much with my son.
I uses to work 3 days a week, & I'd drop my son at mums in the morning on my way to work. She gave him breakfast, got his uniform on and took him to school. Then she'd pick him up from school and they'd play and talk. And I'd get there at 6pm to take him home. Those were long days. Couldn't have done it without her.
When I was at my worst, I forgot heaps. Words, facts. One day I couldn't spell 'the' -
T H E!!! Every sentence I'd forget words when I was talking to someone and my son would have to interpret for me. That's an awful time to go through. I lost my sense of self then. But my memory has returned. Not quite 100% but a lot better. But it has my son and mum worried at the time. It waa just because I was so sick - that my brain had to shut down some areas, to keep my body alive. I wasn't sleeping. My anxiety and panic attacks were debilitating and I just wanted it to end.
So I think it could be possible that your mum may be suffering similar in regards to her memory. There is probably so much going on for her, that it's had to step aside for the moment. Anyway, I hope that's the case.
But dementia risk does increase with age. So hopefully the hospital will also look into that for you.
I think it's great you're having a day off tomorrow. You need it. Do you think you can keep your mind busy enough or relaxed enough to not worry about mum so much tomorrow? Just let it go. Cos you'll find out Friday how she is.
I love lasagna. Delicious. I've never attemped to make it myself. My mum cooks it occasionally. One if my favorite dishes.
So what will be your relaxing plans for tomorrow?

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI
Hey @utopia
That would have been so stressful for you – having to watch over the ED doctors like that. It is arrogant of them not to listen to family members – they think they know best, but in actual fact, we know our mum best. Im glad the nurse intervened and did what needed to be done when that doctor was being an idiot and not listening.
That is so awesome that you and your mum were out dancing together. I don’t think my mum has ever stepped foot in a pub lol! Great memories for you to hold onto. Mum and I have done other things together like going to the movies (gold class even haha!), took her to a show at fringe festival a couple of years ago. I try to take her to new places, even if we are just going for a drive. So she can have new experiences.
Im so sorry to hear about your dad luv. it would have been hard for him, and for your family, to see him suffer the way he did. Its hard but you know that he is no longer suffering.
Your mum sounds amazing – such a mum! Hehe. And sounds like you were very lucky that she was there for you when you needed her most. Our mums do so much for us, don’t they? And they don’t expect anything in return.
That would have been hard for you, and scary, when you were having trouble articulating your words. Im glad that you are feeling better. It is understandable that you just want to shut down, especially when everything just gets too much. Im so happy to hear that you are in an better place now as it sounds like you were going through some really tough times *hugs*. And it makes sense, and hopefully, that is what is happening to my mum. One of the nurses at the clinic rang me to today to let me know that mum has been booked in for an EEG next Tuesday so I will be going to take her there. Apparently mum was quite agitated this morning, didn’t want to speak to the nurses, or have breakfast or a shower, she was also awake since 3am this morning. Poor luv ☹ I am glad they are doing the test as I want to know what is going on, and if there are things they can rule out, then they should do the tests to rule them out.
I went to carers wa this morning for my counselling session (counsellor is easy on the eye lol). Also met with one of the advisors to have a chat about support and resources that I can access. It was really good as I was overwhelmed with all the information I had at home. she gave me some information that was much more user friendly! So I will look through the information and contact service providers. It is a it overwhelming but it is also something I know I need to do.
As for my day off today, I did my carers stuff this morning and then actually went to a jeweller as I have mum’s engagement and wedding ring (she doesn’t wear jewellery lol) . I want to get them repaired as unfortunately they had to be cut off her hand. I think she gained weight and she couldnt get them off. Im waiting on a quote to let me know how much it will set me back as I would love to wear them 😊 im crossing my fingers it wont cost too much but im not holding my breath hehe … I seriously need to colour my hair! I was gonna do it this afternoon … hmmmm … decisions decisions. I cant be bothered but need to. It would be nice to have pretty hair for my birthday on Saturday. Im going to go and have afternoon tea with mum at the clinic and go to the movies with my 2 closest friends in the evening. I want to see that movie “I feel pretty” . at least that way I am doing something for my birthday.
I feel quite calm today. I feel guilty cause I do relax more when mum isn’t here. I know that is a natural feeling though. I can just relax. Don’t have to worry about her. was talking to my counsellor today about options, ie mum coming back home and getting extra help in, or if it gets to the point of mum being admitted into a nursing home, that is something I have to look into. I have this guilt hovering over my head. I know that there would be less stress on me, and I could have my life back, but I feel guilty and wonder how I could do that to my mum. It’s a huge decision and one I wish I didn’t have to make. Life isn’t easy hey luv?
Lasagne is yummy – I didn’t cook it though hehe … is your mama a good cook? My mum has so many recipes, she is such an awesome cook – and she loves doing it. she cant do it as much as she used to but I love when we get in the kitchen together and cook. What are you fave foods? I love home cooking. I love hot chips (omg I will just keep eating them lol), and yoghurt, icecream, biccies – all the ‘healthy’ stuff haha. But I do eat healthy when it comes to breakfast, lunch and dinner. I just like my sweets 😊
How has your day been? What have you been up to? How is your son? Hows your mama? Questions questions questions ……….

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI
On a serious note, I'm glad he was really helpful today. And that you got some more info on home support and other services that you can utilise.
Getting the rings repaired sounds wonderful. How nice to be able to have them. Has your sister got any of your mums jewelry? When my great grandmother died, all of the girls in the family got a ring. When my gran passed, there was only one ring I wanted, but my aunty took it to pass onto her granddaughter. Not to worry. My mum got some of Grans jewelry, so it will come to me and my sister eventually.
Wow. You have some hard decisions that you may have to make in the next few years. Feeling guilty would be a normal reaction, but if your mum gets that sick that you can't care for her, then it's for the best. But very hard.
I'm glad the hospital is running a few tests to check your mums full health.
Last year on one of my hospital stays, I also had an ecg and a 24 heart monitor. Nothing showed. Thank God. The chest pain was intense, but ended up being new physical symptoms due to anxiety. I was dreading something was wrong with my heart, as I'd only had a stroke the year before. Part of that memory loss I wrote about. Except we didn't know about the stroke until about 5 or 6 months later. Lol.
Yes, definitely get your hair coloured ready for Saturday and then out to the movies. And what an oportune movie to see. A positive motivational one for women. I can't remember (a common phrase from me) - but how old will you be on Saturday?
My birthdays not until the end of September when I'll be turning 48.
Just picked my son up from band practice. He plays saxophone. Got take away pizza for dinner. So I'll eat now and talk again later.
