Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI

Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI

Struggling atm. Just want to chat, distract my mind. Mum has depression, recently discharged from mental health clinic. I can see she's not well but she internalises. We are usually so close but she just wants to be on her own, doesn't want to engage in much conversation. Perhaps I'm feeling sorry for myself as I miss our relationship. I can see that my depression and anxiety is increasing, which is making it harder to cope. Feeling alone tonight.

@utopia

hi sweetheart

that's okay luv, i was worried about you so wanted to check in with you, especially as i know you were having a rough weekend. yep, lack of sleep messes with us doesnt it?

good on you for going to the AA meeting - it provides you with the support you need, yes? and well done for being aware when you need the extra support.

mum had such an up and down day today, poor luv. she's really not herself utopia. i stayed with her all day today. she seems to deteriorate during the day. and becomes quite agitated in the evenings. she was adamant about coming home tonight. wouldnt let up. i got the doctor to come in and talk to her that she has to stay in hospital.

yes the psych came and assessed her, and i talked to him. he validates what i say and takes the time to talk to me. she has a UTI which can be exacerbating her symptoms. she is very paranoid about things, and mood is all over the place. at first it was really affecting me but now it doesnt affect me as much now, and i dont take it on board when she says stuff. shes not in a good place mentally. at this stage, they need to reassess her medication but first they need to clear up the uti to see how much the uti is affecting her mentally.

im trying to look after myself luv. ooh, i bought some chocolate coated licorice - thats looking after myself hehe

how are you luv? how did the aa meeting go?

xxxxxxxxxx

@Bella1978
I'm glad your mum got her assessment today. Are they changing some of her meds? Which ones? A UTI. Poor love. That can really mess with your mind and is so painful. No wonder she doesn't want to do much and is in a bit of a bad mood. She must be feeling terrible.
Wow. Spending the whole day. You must be exhausted. That's a long long day.
They will have to reassess her after the UTI is fully cleared up. Might take a bit more time.
Glad you bought yourself a treat. Chocolate is always the best choice. I bought some myself tonight.
The AA Meeting goes for an hour and a half. But I had to leave after an hour. As my son had aready finished work half an hour before. Couldn't have him wait an hr after finishing work. Too long.
Was good to go to the meeting. Was helpful.
I'm off to bed now.
Hope you get a good nights sleep.

Hey sweetheart, how are you? sorry I have been MIA the past few days, been a bit hectic with mum! But you probably guessed that already.

They have changed some of her meds. Its just so hard atm, and she is refusing some of her meds. She also needs to have an ultrasound done of her kidneys as her creatinine level is very high but she refused – wouldn’t let them do it. and her bp is really high too. but when she is in the mood of not wanting to listen to anyone, it is really hard to get her to do anything, even though it is for her benefit. plus she wants to keep coming home, she is very adamant about it. im learning not to take what she says to heart as i know its not her. the other night she said if i dont take her home, i can pack my bags and leave. a few weeks ago that would have really affected me but i take it in my stride now - i know she doesnt mean those things. I really feel for her though as i dont know what is going on in her mind. her behaviours are so out of character for her, and she is very unpredictable. Last night at hospital she was okay, but in an instant she got very very agitated, and was yelling at the nurse. I managed to settle her down and then she was okay. But she doesn’t always listen to me, so it is very hit and miss. Ive taken the day off from visiting her today. Had to catch up on chores. Its now 5pm and im just laying on my bed catching up with messages. Me so tired though lol

Yep, and you are right, they will reassess her after the UTI clears up, so we are kind of in limbo atm. Just taking it one day at a time. She is in a good place and being well looked after so I am at ease.

Im really pleased that the AA meeting was helpful. How often do you go to them? I have a friend who found them very helpful and when he was going to them, he was able to stay on track with his sobriety. for about the past year or so he has really struggled though, and i dont think he has been going to the meetings either. when it gets to much for him, he admits himself into hospital so the temptation isnt there. i think he needs to stay longer though but he works for himself so he cant stay there too long. I can understand it wouldn’t be easy luv so well done for recognising you need extra support and for going to the meeting.

How have you been since we last messaged? Have you been up to much this week? My week consisted of mama, eat and sleep lol 😊

Whats for dinner? Anything yummy? Im so random at times ….

Re: Battling MI whilst caring for someone with MI

I have slept the last few days away @Bella1978. Depression is lurking close by. But I see my psychologist tomorrow and my psychiatrist on Friday.
I did manage to gwt up and cook a ahephards pie fir dinner for my son his girlfriend and myself.
I wonder what your mums reaction would be if next time she says she wants to come home, you tell her she can't until all the tests are done, including regular bp monitoring? Tell her the longer she resists these tests, the longer she will be in hospital. The same with taking her meds.
I know she's not in her right frame of mind, but the message just may get through to her.
I don't doubt that you are tired. Exhausted more likely. You have a stressful situation to deal with daily. So it's good you took the day off.
I'm flad you are strong enough not to let mums words get to you. She doesn't mean it. She just is struggling herself.
Has your sister been to visit with her? What has she said about your mum? Is your mum more likely to listen to your sister? Maybe you and your sister can play tag being the one to be abrupt with mum. Good cop / bad cop.
Keep me informed. And I know you are really busy so can't respond all the time.
Just take care of yourself.

Hey sweets, do you have some coping strategies that you can use when the depression starts up? I am glad you see your psychologist tomorrow and your psychiatrist on Friday. Having supports in place is so important.

Yep, when mum asks to come home I tell her she cant come home yet as she needs to get better and that the nurses are there to look after her. I explained to her that they need to do the blood tests and the ultrasound because of her kidneys and that we need to look after them. when she is in that frame of mind though, she wont budge. She says she is fine, she wants to go home and if she needs to come back for me to call an ambulance and take her back. There are times when she is quite paranoid, she thinks the meds are poison, she even told one of the nurses that she doesn’t like her, and another one to be quiet while the doctor is talking. These behaviours are not mum at all – she is one of the most lovely and gentle people you would ever come across. And yep, have explained to her why she needs to take her meds. It is so hard atm trying to get through to her sometimes. Its frustrating and scary because she needs to get these tests done, especially for her kidneys. They gave her a calming medication – once it took effect she was compliant and more herself. They wanted to put a gtn patch on her yesterday to reduce her blood pressure – both the doctor and I explained why she needed it – she wouldn’t have a bar of it though. And the more we try to convince her, the more aggravated she gets.

No, my sister hasn’t been to visit her luv. only me and my 2 uncles. I did ask mum if she wanted my sister to visit but she wasn’t keen on it. my sister can increase my mum’s anxiety. the less triggers she has, the better. And no, she is definitely not more likely to listen to my sister luv. its me that is the bad cop … and sometimes the good cop hehe

Actually, speaking about my sister – she came over today to help me with the housework. She turned around and said “you haven’t done anything” and “don’t you think its wrong that you leave it all for when I come over?” I told her yes, I did leave it for when she comes over as I needed her to help me – that was the whole idea of her coming – to help me with the housework! Gees, its not like I was sitting on my arse while she was helping, I was helping her do it!! I have been at the hospital practically everyday so I haven’t had the time nor energy to do any housework. I haven’t bothered as I couldn’t deal with it - all I have energy for atm is myself and mum. All I needed was her to help me with dishes in the sink, sweep the kitchen and dining room and help me do the washing. The house is tidy, I just needed some help with catching up on chores. She just doesn’t get it. I told her to leave as I wanted to be on my own. it always ends up like this when she says she will help me. I just don’t get it luv ☹ I told her I would gladly swap places with her, I’ll stay home and do the housework and she can go to the hospital everyday and see mum deteriorate and liaise with the medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers.

Sorry luv, I don’t mean to rant and rave, just needed to vent about that.

What you doing this evening? You having a quiet night? Its 6pm here. Im quite comfy on my bed. Hmmm decisions decisions … what to do? It feels like the weekend cause of the public holiday today. Ooh, did I tell you picked up my mum’s wedding and engagement rings? Its so nice to have them fixed and wearing them. they look beautiful all cleaned up. oh, as for my hair – I didn’t colour it but I did wash it today – hey, it’s a start haha! Bachelor in paradise isn’t on tonight so nothing to watch *sigh*. I could just lay on my bed and be lazy. That be nice. Ooh did you make the shepherds pie from scratch? Mama loves shepherds pie! But I buy the ready made ones and pop them in the oven!
