Fragile

Fragile

For a while I have tried to find a thread I had started when I joined the forum that could be a "home" thread for me.

Being busy about the forum has been a coping style, where I can acknowledge all my different life experiences that had been silenced. Possibly do some good and prevent things from getting worse. Like the little boy with the finger in the dyke.

Re: Fragile

@Appleblossom yes I know of Henri Nouwen and have read several of his shorter books especially the one on the desert fathers and mothers. I was impressed by his late work in intentional communities of intellectually disabled folks - if I remember right.

@AlwaysMyself thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. It's been quite a journey for me to become more aware of my emotional states and find the words to express them. Something being on the forums has helped with.

Yes @Appleblossom , I defo let the kid be the teacher. I come from a family of teachers so the kids are always around teachers. The eldest already has all the 'teacher-like' mannerisms and she can break down and unpack concepts really well.

How was your day today? Any music-related activities today?

Re: Fragile

Thanks for posting this article @Dimity,, it's really interesting and I think adds to the evidence for positive influence of music on MH.. I definitely notice the positive effects of music on myself,, even if I am by myself.. I think there is good evidence for effect of music in groups on MH,, this is another angle though..

Sorry to crash your thread @Appleblossom,, I hope you are well and enjoying all your music ventures

Re: Fragile

Yes music therapy is effective in different ways too @Till23 .

Science is still catching up with so much culturally transmitted knowledge... unfortunately some ways of knowing are privileged over others, as CALD and many other folk know.

I laughed a little - at least I now know my lack of enthusiasm for some dissonant contemporary music isn't just due to being out of touch.

Yes @Dimity,, although I am not really across it,, I think there is a lot of evidence for music therapy.. I have also seen first hand the effect of music on elderly, including those with dementia..

Yes,, I'm not a fan of dissonance, although sometimes it can be interesting,, I wouldn't want to be listening to it over a long time though.

Thanks for the @Dimity will check it out when I have time.

Hello @Till23

@tyme I was doing stuff this weekend with an arts organisation with mental health focus. We did discuss the difference between being involved in creative activities outside of the clinical paradigms of art and music therapy. Clinical models can have their place, but also can be restrictve and maybe even disempowering, all depending on the practitioner and the structure.

Ah... there's theory and there's practice.

Thaks @tyme for asking. I am actually thinking of pulling out of the concert with the badly behaved psychiatrist. I just dont need the feelings she now eilicits within me. I have done music with other psychitrists in the group, but this person really got to me. I know its my feelings and my responsibility, but its everything she symbolises for me now, as a person who gets away with bad behaviour. The arts organisation has more dates so I have clashes in my diary now.

I did persevere with the Recorder ensemble, for 2 years through 2 international music competitions. I guess I am not desperate to a concert, as I have done so many. Not sure what to do. Pretty common situation for me not knowing what to do, but feeling it all anyway. You said I was numb once, butI actually am not sure how numb I have been, as I always had sensitive feelings, but always regulating distress, anxiety and hypervigilance etc.

Yes bonding through music, although family bonds often broken. Very sad.

Its probably not as high profile as @Till23 's stuff. it was very niche.

Re: Fragile

Hi @Appleblossom, it's good to see you are doing music in your own way. I feel you have persevered with the badly behaved psychiatrist for quite a while, having read your posts for more than a year now. It sounds like you are keeping strong boundaries.

Actually @Dimity posted the music article, I have just made a few comments as I found it very interesting.

Re: Fragile

I made a decision today to pull out of the concert in April with the group with the badly behaved psychiatrist. I had a really good discussion with the conductor, and she understands. She has been overcompensating for her as well, but its tricky with the current political climate. I may go back to the group later in the year, but having a good break and can be busy with other projects, where I can be more upfront about mental health stuff without stigma or awkwardness or judgment. Just a blessed relief. I have done so many concerts, that is not my need. Having decent rapport and connection is more important than music per se. i have done the ... putting my feelings aside to focus on the music for decades. So I guess its my year to be free... and be me.
