Employment Services

Employment Services

I have a couple of questions about employment service providers. I've tried to hunt around the forum for existing threads but can't find them tonight, sorry.

I had an exemption from looking for work from centrelink for 6 months after an assessment due to mental health reasons, which has recently expired. This afternoon I recieved an appointment with a job access provider for next week (the timing is incredible 🙁). My GP, psych and MH worker are all of the opinion that looking for work right now is not going to be the right thing for me but I can't get in to see my GP for a month and I need a new referral letter from her so I can see my psych. I plan on trying to get in touch with my MH worker but I don't know if we'll have time to sort something out now. I have a letter from my GP dated a few weeks ago, that says that I'm too unwell to do the work thing right now, but I don't think that's going to be enough on it's own.

I want to study and have plans to finish my degree (which I am so close to completing) but I need my head a little less the way it is right now. I'm slowly slowly getting there, maybe, but I am not quite close enough yet. The next term starts in May and that's when, if I can get everything organised, I am hoping to return. It's a big if though.

Employment/job stuff is very difficult for me and if I have to engage with a service I really need it to be with one that understands mental health barriers. Does anyone know how to get a referral to a disability employment service (DES), which is what was recommended I do if I had to go with this option? I can't remember what they said to do to get to see one.

If I do have to go next week, is studying something an employment service will consider?

I'm also starting the NDIS process as it rolls out here so how does that work with looking for work requirements? Am I going to be made to look for work, while trying to prove I have a permanent psychosocial disability, and trying to organise myself to return to study to finish my degree? That seems like a giant head mash mix 🙁

Any ideas on where to start navigating this one would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Employment Services

From my understanding in my circumstances @CheerBear you put sickness certificates in (and yes mine were all three months long) and after a certain number they decline them and then you need a jca. Last year that was the process I went through.

The year before at my first des interview she sent a recommendation in for a jca to be done realising I was miles from being able to work.

Last year when my fourth medical certificate went in, I was declined and I freaked out. My cc then came with me to the jca and exemption was given again without too much pain or explaining in the interview (major distress before it though, lots of freaking out) and it definitely helped to have my cc there. I listed what my aims were for this year including volunteering and attending groups and that that was the first steps to getting back into society. She agreed that adding the extra pressure of des was too much and granted me 8 months then.

It was two years ago when I was told by the person doing the jca that if I needed exemption again I should apply for the dsp. Then when I finally agreed (I was against it like you for a long time) everyone initially supported it but then I was told the reality of it all for ME (just highlighting this was my situation - my diagnosis different etc.)

i hope this helps.

Re: Employment Services

@CheerBear Hi CheerBear my daughter is currently organising a Disabled Pension through centrelink re her mental illness. The only wayout is to get into seeing your psychiatrist and ask (with a big smile because there are many forms ... lol) for help to get them all back to Centrelink.

That is the only way to do it in our experience. Good luck with it!!!!! and that is only for 6 months lol!

Re: Employment Services

Hi @Bunniekins 👋. I haven’t really posted much lately and when I did recently I was in crisis and chaotic and I hijaked an old abandoned thread that was the title of how I felt. I guess this is my way of saying there’s not much of my stuff worth reading just now. Today is the first day back a bit on track and I got caught up on this thread as I’ve had lots of recent experience with it.....and it drew out some strong passionate feelings that weren’t so destructive (lol, not that c-link isnt ever not destructive). Long ramble to say hi really. I hope your world is ok. 💜🤗

i hope your child gets the dsp without too many dramas......and yes the form is hideous. You could purchase 4 properties, it would be quicker and you’d still have less paperwork 😉😱

Re: Employment Services

@Teej Are you feeling a bit better now? Yes damn C-link curse them. Only 6 months and then having to go through it all again when you are often too sick to get out of bed! Just ridiculous. Just thinking about it stresses me out. I am a carer of my son though so while he lives with me I dont have to worry about that. It would send me to the depths of despair if I did.

Yes my world is okay thanks. Just trying to lose weight and study and keep my head above the tide. Both are such a struggle but what can you do giving up is never an option so have to keep on trying.
