Aging and Mental Illness

Aging and Mental Illness

When I was younger my life was an impossible puzzle - my son had an MI and his behaviour worsened, my parents couldn't cope with it and pushed me away - I would not tolerate their behaviour and had enough on my plate and my then-h was totally useless and I had reactive depression and anxiety

There was no doubt why I was suffering - and I can say that I read stories here and know the helplessness people feel - or something similar to what they feel - no story is the same

It was a terribly dark period in my life and lasted for a long time but the good news is that all of those things that happened are still there in my memory but having a new therapist who is really interested in my family and the past is really helping me a lot

And time itself has been helpful - I have had useful and sensitive people in my life - and this has been incredibly lucky - but just time is enough - it has allowed healing and this is something I can share

The things that tortured me in the past bother me less - whether this is the truth that I have had a long life and a strong faith is enough for me to examine the past with this new therapist and find it bothers me less when I have shared - which is painful - but I am going away from my sessions with new strength to make the most of what time is left for my old and my "glass-half-empty" attitude of life helps me to see the best in things

I saw something on TV recently - a medical documentary - can't remember which one - and learned that Mental Illness can be more easily dealt with in later life and that people are less likely to develop Mental Illness

I guess that doesn't mean dementia or issues of elder abuse but rather the things that cause us mental anguish earlier in our lives - and we all have cause for such anguish - we handle things differently which is entirely natural

But with the right help we can put many events to rest with understanding ourselves and the other people in our lives at the time better. I don't think what we learn about the people who hurt us needs to be excused but rather finding reasons does give us some peace

I really hope each one of you can find some hope that your present struggles can find resolution as you grow older - it has for me - and I sometimes wonder where I found the strength to carry on and do all I did for myself and to find a better future. One way was to refuse to tolerate other people's bad behaviour but that can lead to being alone - loneliness perhaps but to me being alone is not lonely often but rather I feel a great sense of freedom in having the honesty and strengths of my own choices

And this has to be good news - I wish the best for everyone of you

Re: Aging and Mental Illness

Hi @Owlunar, that is a really interesting post about Mental Illness and aging. I had not thought about it in the ways you have extrapolated. I certainly feel that as I get older I have more insight and also forbearance for my own various conditions. I am more accepting of myself and kinder to myself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it helped to read them.

Hello @Owlunar

Thank you for sharing your life long insights, I have no doubt there are many others, but from what you have written really shows the large amount of awareness you have gained over your life and ability to have choice in what you do and what is best for you, things that take time.

It is nice to hear you have been able to move through such hard times and still have the focus on hope and strength in finding freedom and peace.

Lunar 🙂

Thanks @Former-Member and @MoonGal

Yes Lunar - there are many life-issues that I have come back from the war with and had brilliant ideas - and I so often wonder where I found these insights and think one thing about my solitary life is that I can certainly endure life without someone chattering all the time, ordering me about or the radio or TV interrupting my thought process

Yes MoonGal - it does come down to choices - I am free to make my own decisions a lot of the time - and it is truly amazing how many people think they know what need better than I do - and I have a choice - like for instance- ignore them - tell them I am not ready for "aids" yet

Oh golly - someone I know wanted me to get a scooter and I had to give this person the right to have her choices - I have a "thing" about "aids" if people need them then they do but then there is my mother - she was walking around fine until they gave her a walker in the facility where she and she was dependent upon it next day or next week - I guess she must have made a choice too - she was always codependent

And yes - how wonderful to have the time and peaceful environment all these years and find I am coming out of that past with ideas thought nibbled on from ealier - a year - 5 years - 30 years - now sometimes over 70 years

I have taken the path of least resistance with other people so long it has become a self-protecting habit and right now I am in an Hotel Room in another city gazing out of my window at a fabulous view and this is fantastic - and I have to make a phone call

Right now I know this phone call might mean letting someone else make a choice and I don't know what that will be yet - but I am pretty well done-in after a long journey

But age as also told me this - our life-time has limits - and at least I need to try and make my presence felt and not stay away for someone else's stuff - they can have their stuff but my choice is to see them if I can

Yes - lots of insight - maybe we can share these insights

Of course this forum is all about insight - we need to share our thoughts - if we so choose
