My special place

My special place

Well yesterday certainly threw everything off track. But thanks to some very thoughtful and kind people I was able to get threw it and continue.

I cannot say a lot about what happened as I am sure you all understand but need this support in place.

Things WILL be ok, just a lot to work out.

Psych visit yesterday sorted out some of the things and more things will be happening early next week.

I am sorry if I put anyone through any despair, but unfortunately what happened yesterday morning had to be done.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Re: My special place

Good morning sweet @Snowie. I've just caught up on your thread/post from yesterday. I'm sorry you had unfeeling, unhelpful nurses that made you feel invalidated. But you & I both know that you aren't worthless or nothing. You know in your heart that you have benefited from this hospital stay. You've done some really positive work. Your SI/SH thoughts arent disappearing just from a hospital stay. I was talking to my therapist yesterday about how unhelpful helping people can really screw with a screwed up mind, and how much worse they can make things by their words or tone. I will NEVER ring ATT (crisis team) again. So that is another support system wiped.

Not every admission to hospital will be a positive experience. You are dealing with too many human/non-human variables. Even if you can take away a couple of positive aspects or activities that is something youve gained from being there.

I understand the frustration with meds, pdocs & symptoms. Sometimes hospital pdocs are reluctant to change.meds too much as the side effects of some medications are worse than the remedy itself. And they don't want to tread on toes.

I hope today is a better one for you. Hugs

Re: My special place

Hi @Snowie,

I would feel super angry if I was in your position. It is absurd to me that you (or at least, workcover) is spending a fortune on you being in a private hospital, and a nurse can't even make time to talk to you!

And a psychiatrist wants you to wait until you are out of hospital to have your medication further adjusted? Er...well then what's the point of having a psychiatrist IN the hospital? Can you imagine that happening in any other area of medicine...oh no, we can't help you with medication in hospital, you will need to wait until you go home to deal with that! Grrrrrrrrrr

Are you being offered any options beyond medication (and being told to think happy thoughts!!!!!!!) regarding the nightmares? Has anyone mentioned anything about things such as EMDR, neurofeedback, or nightmare rescripting? EMDR and neurofeedback are techniques that help the brain to process the trauma at the neurobiological level so that it is no longer stuck in the endless loop of replaying the trauma through nightmares. Nightmare rescripting is a cognitive technique that has quite a strong research evidence base.

Can you tell I'm feeling cranky and frustrated on your behalf? You have every right to feel angry. You deserve so much better!

I can’t believe the “think happy thoughts” bit ..... how could that have been a psych nurse ??

Re: My special place

Thanks all for your replies.

@Faith-and-HopeI kindly told the nurse that if I could think happy thoughts I wouldn't be in here!

@Phoenix_Risingyes I could feel your crankyness through my screen, so thankyou for validating my thoughts.

@Sans911@outlander@Bunniekins

So today started off pretty crappy but did turn around for the better.

I did a mindfulness practice thins morning followed by a workshop on Understanding Guilt, shame and forgiveness. Didn't nearly go but made myself. Had quite a few leaks during the workshop as it brought up a lot of feelings of guilt and shame that I place on myself and why we are so hard on ourselves. I was not the only leaky one so that was good I have not reached the forgiveness stage yet as I think that will take time, but it was good to hear from others that have started that journey. Went to contemplation and journaling this afternoon followed by relaxation. I am glad I forced myself to attend these groups rather than stay huddled in a ball and hidden away, as it gave me a chance to give myself a pat on the back, something I rarely do.

In amongst all of this, I had another session with my pdoc and hubby came along. We have set out a safety plan for at home for when things go bad that he can remind me on what I have to do and the steps are written down for both of us to see.

I am still having some thoughts of SH/SI but they have reduced, especially the SI thoughts which is a nice change for my brain. If all goes ok tomorrow, I am heading home on Friday which has brought mixed emotions. Good to be going home, my own comfy bed, a proper shower!, my kids, my dog and of course hubby, but scared because I don't want to fall back into my old ways. I do realise however not everything will be fixed, however I feel more in control of my actions, something I was greatly missing two weeks ago. I also spoke to the head nurse about my concerns with the other nurses. Not sure if any changes will take place, but I was heard so am happy with that.

@Sans911placed no night med (the one that is used for high blood pressure) to help with nightmares which can be increased with my normal pdoc once out.

@Phoenix_Risingbe happy to know that the pdoc has submitted the forms for a DBT course so hopefully the wait isn't too long and can get some more info soon.

So only time will tell if this hospital admission was a good thing. There sure have been some up's and down's during this time, however I do feel I have a bit more clarity for myself, and if it can stop me from going down a destructive path then I will be satisfied.

Have already booked in appts. next week with normal pdoc and psych so will have that support continuing.

I think that is it. Thanks for reading my essay, sorry if I missed tagging anyone.

Re: My special place

Thanks @Snowie for courageously sharing your hospital experiences including your feelings. It’s great to hear the good and the bad, also great to hear you pushing yourself to attend groups. So glad things are improving for you and that the separation from your family has been worth it ( hope I got that right?)
Take care 🌸🌿❤️

Re: My special place

@Snowie - I want to smack that 'happy thoughts' nurse across the face. Although I don't encourage violence or assault it sure would make me feel better.

I'm incredibly proud of what you have achieved in this hospital stay. You've stood up for you, you've allowed yourself to be vulnerable in front of others in a safe space and you've pushed through barriers of discomfort instead of isolation (which I would considered too) and gone to things that you've found are actually enjoyable.

I understand too the mixed feelings about going home. Hospital is like an artificial bubble of safety. Not everything will be fixed when you go home, but I think you have a great understanding of yourself, who you are and why you are like this now, and better insight and tools to help you in the future. And hopefully better medication to help you get through these trying times.

I am sending you a big squishy 🤗 hug because I'm very proud of you, but you should give yourself a pat on the back as you've done a lot of hard work.
