My Husbands Intellect and decline into social media.

My Husbands Intellect and decline into social media.

Hi, I have been reading a few stories about of people’s lives and it has resonated with me so thought I would share mine. Maybe in the hope that somewhere out there will understand. I feel this forum may help.

My darling husband of 12 yrs has been destroyed and ruined by mental illness for 50 yrs. he is well medicated and largely stable but his memories at the hands of the mental health system from decades ago and the cruelty of his elderly mother are haunting him more and more. Mainly in the form of Paranoia and inappropriate outbursts of rage and jealousy. As goes with this life I am his only friend and up until now I have always been able to talk and walk him through the maze of hatred for people and manic behaviors but I feel I am losing my own strength to do so. I am so very tired physically pinging from day to day suffocating in his personality and lonely.

I am here, I love and adore my gentle empathetic husband but his traumas and baggage from a very cruel treatment in phsych wards of old and his mentally ill narssacistic mother are I’m afraid going to break me. We are generally very quiet, peaceful, country people and live simply and easily although money is tight as I am physically disabled and cannot walk, he has not been able to work for 8 yrs. He is extremely intelligent and was marking exam papers university level and was on staff but can no longer be a part of that world. Instead he has filled the void with the uglier part of social media and his opinionated disturbed views are at times crushing us. That’s when I beg him to stop.

He is becoming more and more resistant to me as he sees it as some way out of his own head. His rantings are becoming very delusional and he has been banned from several news platforms that in the past have been very good for intellectual stimulation that I cannot provide at such a high level. The academic world itself has a fine line that If crossed itself wipes people out as being mentally ill and therefore no longer viable. His interests are in political history and psychology he has a double degree with honors in both but was never able to complete his PHD due to the stresses and traumas of mental illness taking away his opportunity to extend the time frame of completion.

My world is spinning sometimes 20 times a day trying to follow and keep track of which direction we are going but mostly by the end of the day ending in my complete exhaustion and crying on the inside. I’m am unable to remove myself due to my own physical restraints of pain inability to walk further than the letterbox and Seeking help is difficult as his superiority leaves us on the fringe. His trust of phsychology has been broken many times after decades of innoprpriate treatments in the 1980s locked in wards but being allowed out on day leave to attend university. Somehow we just keep going. Happiness in the earlier part of the day but by nightfall misery brought on largely by the internet and his addiction to Facebook. Thankyou for listening just looking for support and maybe a little bit of a shoulder as mine are hurting. Maybe someone out there will understand. In hope.

Emotional armour on. Driving to Warrnambool through the dreadful weather but have decided to spend a few days in Torquay to recover from the MIL abuse before coming home. Trying a new tactic and going to psychologically leave the nastiness at her door not ours. We just need to do the right thing by her and for ourselves hopefully avoid the trigger. Will be relying on mother nature’s beauty of the ocean to get us through. That always helps.

@Carlachris
It's seems unreal that this little old lady has such an effect on you, your hubby and your married life.
I thought people mellow with age? There goes that myth out the door 🙂
Does your hubby has same gene as mum you think? I know my son has same trade marks as his dad used to have. (He might still have them but he's o/seas so don't have to deal with it - yay)
Good thing there is more help now then in the past. All we need is 'insight' when things are not going that well.
Lady, you're in my thoughts - darn FB!!
Cheers,
Grasshopper3

Re: My Husbands Intellect and decline into social media.

Thankyou everyone for your lovely kindness. The trip went ok considering. But the ever changing condition of MI has shown me it’s awful side again. Thankfully only for a few hours the night after mother’s day. We had a wonderful 2 days in Torquay them down to Warrnambool for 1 and a half hours with his mum. She was happy to see us for a change and mildly pleasant. ....this is new to us as she is a cuttingly cruel woman. (Not well) Hubby was so loving and kind and considerate as he always is. Couple of photos and a couple of vanilla slices and we left as advised by his psych cut it short. Everything ok for the next day but later that night he had a paranoid destroy me and my self esteem, delusional episode at the hotel in Torquay. I find I have to let it happen. It crushes me, it hurts, I cry myself to sleep as I can’t defend myself or talk him down until he gets it out at me. Trusting every word into something else and causing me of being an idiot who knows nothing being cruel to him telling him he needs help with his MI. .... I know it’s not him it’s the MI. I’m the only one there trapped in the room as it’s late cold wet and I’m exhausted in bed so I have to let him verbally destroy me again until it’s over. I know the patterns. No hope of recovery until late the next day. Driving home in the awful weather with his profuse apologies and over compensating insecurities. He will be ratty for a week or so lives like a filthy pig, hates people angry at innocent shop owners and people quietly minding their own business walking the dog. That’s where we are today. It’s never going to change but thankfully it’s not as often. Gosh I’m tired. For better for worse in sickness and in health. Love him.

X

Re: My Husbands Intellect and decline into social media.

Thankyou for asking. It helps to know I am not totally alone. For now my Darling is ok.....ish. His elderly mother has been hospitalized several times since I last wrote in May. My husband has been receiving very good counselling in the form of PTSD care due to her. It has allowed him to function reasonably well. Her deterioration and the constant stress of community services wanting us to move her into care against her will is a nightmare for my husband and his brother. We have been told to expect a phone call one day that she has been found dead. We can’t do anything as she keeps being hospitalized for pneumonia and bad falls and high bp but manages to sign herself out before assessment. She is 89. That’s the narssacistic way no recognition for the unending cruelty she is inflicting on her sons. She destroyed his childhood and past but I won’t let her have our future. We work together everyday meeting that challenge. There is a sense of calm but it’s emotionally frightening as well. It’s like being pulled inside out and upside down. She is a monster because she is a trigger and uses it still to traumatize my husband. Relief is in sight now that winter has past. Outside long walks with the dog and lots of swimming in the local heated pool work wonders. Unplugging the Internet still helps as well. Thankyou again to staying in contact.

Re: My Husbands Intellect and decline into social media.

Thankyou for your reply,

as far as his mother is concerned my husbands MI Is the first in the family and she is in total denial that she suffers a similar problem. She has stated to me that there has never been any such thing in her family even though she has been on antidepressants for over 65 yrs. due to severe Post natal Depression her sister has had several delusional breakdowns. His mother is a cruel narssacist. His father was Free from MI or any other condition associated but his 3 sisters (husbands Aunts)all have been treated for Bi Polar personality disorders and his 4th Aunt suicided at age 14. The family links are definitely there. With good treatment we are succeeding to break down a few doors but smaller doors keep appearing. At least they for now are smaller and easier to keep shut.
