Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

This thread is a follow on (or starting over) from my previous thread Caring for a wife with borderline personality disorder – sequel to diary of wife's hospital stay, I wanted to start over and in order to leave all the trauma and negativity of last year behind me and start fresh.

Those of you who have been following our family journey will know that after a number of hospital admissions for my darling I was encouraged by my councillor to implement some boundaries (lovingly implemented guidelines, not rules to be enforced) as well as self-care for myself as what we were doing was clearly not working and my health was /still is being affected.

Well after a smoother than expected start the boundaries and self-care were forgotten with my darling having a complete melt down and further lengthy hospital admissions due to high risk of self harm and a genuine attempt to leave us. The last 6 months particularly have been quite difficult for us all. S2 particularly had a lot of issues at school during this time and is currently seeing a councillor.

The purpose of this new thread is to again document our journey of healing, working on implemented boundaries and commitment to self care. As with the previous thread this is so that I can have a visual plan for myself with some accountability to follow through with plans in place and in the hope that it may help others in similar situations to ours. And so that I can track our progress. This was especially helpful in the last thread leading up to Christmas when I was feeling down about our current position to review what I had written and see just how far we have come.

Hi

Thanks for sharing this post, your list of boundaries and determination to set them is inspiring. I could certainly use similar ones myself, although I have been afraid to thus far ( ie calling the mental hospital if a crisis occurs).

It would be really distressing to have to call the hospital and I fear that my partner's threats of resentment if I do so will become a reality. All the same, I have to protect myself and my daughter though...

I have to say congrats too. You really have been through a hell of a lot by the sounds of it and you seem to have more than your fair share of challenges. Good on you for sticking it out.

I don't think your boundaries are harsh at all. They make sense and you need them..

All the best 🙂

Thanks @Winterz, it is a big encouragement to hear this.

The boundaries are hard and I am still a work in progress. I am currently working through some strategies with outside assistance to work with the boundaries more effectively. I made the call a number rof times last year re hospital admission and it is distressing. But also necessary at times.

Despite a bumpy start to the day and not much progress on the packing front things are not too bad tonight @Former-Member

We did manage to pack a kitchen cupboard and have 2 large cartons of crockery for mum in laws garage sale but well short of the days expectations.

Hoping to have some sort of answer re the contract by Monday evening but the agent is saying it will not be a problem. She has been able to reassure darling a little. I can tell though I will not have any fingernails left by Monday.

I had a productive session with the uni councillor this afternoon. I am getting some good support and direction with reaffirming boundaries and direction with getting additional support for darling and for myself. I am most grateful for this assistance as I am so run down I don't know where or how to start.

I feel bad for admitting this but feeling more and more annoyed and resentful where I used to feel compassion and empathy. This bothers me 😵 but also is motivating me to do something about it. I am very grateful for the opportunity that I have been given with this support to link in with required supports and services.

@Winterz do you have any external supports for yourself. This is especially important when trying to implement boundaries. That has been made even more clear to me this afternoon.

No only for the boundaries though but just to keep on top of things.

I trust all is as well as it can be for you.

Thanks @Former-Member, that means a lot.

Trying hard not to focus on the negatives. There are lots of people with lots going on and significant trials of their own... and we have much to be grateful for... I have to confess though I am not in a good space at the moment despit all the positives and can feel myself sinking. I am grateful though that I have some insight about this and am getting some assistance to get better supports in place.

I saw a job last week that if I was on top of things I could apply for but it is so out of reach at the moment and I'm finding that hard to accept.
