Keeping safe

Keeping safe

Hi everyone ive realised how outdated my safety plan is but the problem is im out of ideas on what sort of self care and activities people do to help keep themselves safe when the going gets tough.

So if you dont mind sharing.. what are some of your safe activities?

I dont want to die i want to end the sufferring @utopia so can understand. I cant go to hospital every time though its a struggle to go or even ask for help at all. .i tend to have suicidal thoughts constantly but some days are stronger than others.

Re: Keeping safe

We are all different @outlander with what we can cope with or not. How often or strong our suicidal ideation is. How we manage our MI. What meds we are are. What diversions or self soothing techniques work.
We are all so different. No 'one size fits all'.
But we can still learn from other's experiences.
Suicidal thoughts are rare for me. So when I get them - I know I'm really needing help.
More often I get the - ' I don't want to live like this' - 'this is too hard' type self talk - when my depression grips me. And I have to find a way out of that negative self talk. It's trying to stop that self talk quickly - so it doesn't lead to further deterioration in my health.
It's a tough balance - trying to keep good mental health.

I like hearing of others experiences that how i find i learn too @utopia so thank you for sharing.
So i guess for me to really work out what my changes and warning signs are i might have to sit ad find a pattern or have a think more about what is it that actaully changea when im hitting the danger zone.

Re: Keeping safe

For me, I don't want to be destracted from my suicidal thoughts, I can get irritable if distracted from my su thoughts. One therapist suggested that my suicidal ideation was a way of escaping my predicament in life. There's a level where thinking about suicide is comforting but then it can turn into a scary obsession. The only thing that I know that will work to interrupt it is the threat of hospital. I find safety plans irritating because I don't like being controlled or trapped...god knows, my whole existence is being controlled and trapped, I am not going to have my one escape also controlled and trapped too.

Thats ok @Lemonjuice you offer a different perspective thats for sure. I tend to accept those thoughts sometimes but also know i dont have to act on them but i often find them too overwhelming if i really listen to them

Hi @Lemonjuice,

What you describe here is the approach that is taken in DBT, and the one which I like. I agree with what your therapist said; suicidal ideation can be a way of escaping the predicament of life. Thoughts of suicide are just thoughts - they can't hurt us. I find it very calming at times to daydream about suiciding. However, I only do it when I'm lying on my bed or on the floor, and I won't get up until the intense urges pass. Thoughts are just thoughts. I find it much more helpful to ride out the waves of suicidal ideation rather than pushing them away with distraction.
