Topic Tuesday// Burn Out // Tues. 23 Jan. 7pm - 9pm AEDT

Hi everyone,

For the "average" person, the holiday break provides a time to unwind and relax after a big year. For those of us with a loved one with a mental illness, it can mean added stress through services being closed, disruptive routines, triggering holidays - things that the "average" person wouldn't understand.

This is why January frequently "burn out" time for many of us.

During this Topic Tuesday we will discuss noticing and managing burn out when it creeps in. Whether you have wonderful strategies to share or are in the middle of it all and need help - join us from 7pm AEDT.

Two things you can do now:

1) Hit the 'Like' button below if you want an email reminder on the night

2) Read our blog about Burn Out

@NikNik I wasn't even trying to be funny, I honestly feel that burnt out 😒

And I would have to say things have improved from 2 or 3 months ago.

Re: Topic Tuesday// Burn Out // Tues. 23 Jan. 7pm - 9pm AEDT

I am feeling burnt out after working very hard to stabilise a major issue at work. Eleven months of nasty hrs, poor eating, no exercise and then to lose my job before xmas. I am still not well enough to tackle working and not too great with getting on with life, friends and family. Just focussing on simple things at home and attempting exercise to find joy in me again.

Re: Topic Tuesday// Burn Out // Tues. 23 Jan. 7pm - 9pm AEDT

Think I’m close to that too @Determined ..... but mine is a constant build up of little things across a long period of time rather than the less common crisis moment ..... very infrequent now, thankfully, but have had intense months of daily rage managaement, with no insight on board.

The symptoms seem to appear in a cumulative slow creep way so they are almost imperceptable and then all of a sudden you get into a zone of complete overwhelm etc. That's how it was for me.

Agreed @Janna

Cummulative effect over the past few months, yes.

The unavailability of certain necessary support services (which continues for me at the moment) - with the permanent loss of my MH support worker (today), due to lack of funding.

I find that self-care is my ballast ..... and taking time out whenever and wherever I can .....

Commiserations @Adge ..... don’t know what to say, but feeling for you big time ......

I agree with @Faith-and-Hope, for me it has been a build up of little (and not so little) things over a very long peroid of time.

Re: Topic Tuesday// Burn Out // Tues. 23 Jan. 7pm - 9pm AEDT

I think it is great to have burnout as a topic with the list of symptoms for people to rate themselves on. It's not often that we stop, think and connect with how we really feel. I think it would be a good idea to keep the symptom list and re-assess ourselves on a regular (e.g. monthly basis). It may be a good way of remaining aware of where we are at on the burnout scale and trying to intervene with self-care strategies before we hit a 5 ... or beyond.
