Topic Tuesday// Burn Out // Tues. 23 Jan. 7pm - 9pm AEDT

Hi everyone,

For the "average" person, the holiday break provides a time to unwind and relax after a big year. For those of us with a loved one with a mental illness, it can mean added stress through services being closed, disruptive routines, triggering holidays - things that the "average" person wouldn't understand.

This is why January frequently "burn out" time for many of us.

During this Topic Tuesday we will discuss noticing and managing burn out when it creeps in. Whether you have wonderful strategies to share or are in the middle of it all and need help - join us from 7pm AEDT.

Two things you can do now:

1) Hit the 'Like' button below if you want an email reminder on the night

2) Read our blog about Burn Out

Most definitely the holiday season contributed significantly. The lead up to xmas is generally so fast paced with so many competing demands and things to do and remember. Xmas itself is supposed to be a joyous family time and somehow highlights how bad things are. I actually found my friends and Facebook triggering. I'm not a big facebooker at all but see notifications as they come through - seemed to me like everyone else was having a jolly good time with family or on a holiday. That somehow created an envy in me; I wanted that normality if you know what I mean.

with mine @NikNik

Did the holiday season bring some unexpected and/or additional stressors that contributed,-- this one did as we visited all my stepchildren over the last 2 months and to see them struggling has made me to be more involved in their lives

or is it an accumulation of stressors building up over time? -- this one too has my phsical problems and my mum`s problems are ongoing plus too that my husband has been yoyoing his meds which has not helped

How I burnt out - think having to do all the responsible things (income provider, manage house etc) on top of the 2 year crisis period of emotional distress with Mr D going walkabout 3 times, having to be reported missing, being suicidal and attempting all took it's toll.

I would have to say 9. I (was 3 children) away from checking into hospital for a break. Or running away. Thankfully, through a counselling session of mine my partner attended the counsellor recommended no contact and self care, so I did just that. Theo days of tears and anxiety then a week of just me and the kids. Swimming, paddle boarding, SMILING! It was great. But, no contact period has ended and back to the same ole 'rescuing tendencies' I fall into since I see my partner so completely oblivious to losing all but her job; me in bed.
Back to the emotional numbness, hopelessness and witnessing a slow painful death before my eyes. Sounds very dramatic lol! But it's sadly true.
I'm about a 5 today. Addiction rules at the moment. 😞

How about we start off by having a check in – how are you all travelling? On a scale of 1 (I’m awesome) to 5 (I’m so burnt out) where would you place yourself at the moment?

I would rate myself at 7.

Hi everyone .... 👋

I am just going to pop in briefly, then read back though later, cos I am on the move today (timing !! lol).

Many of you know that my home situation is unstable and we don’t have a diagnosis in place to help provide the greater support and counselling we need .... yet ..... but things are on the move there too.

I have to monitor for burnout in myself and the kids .... generally sitting at around 3 I think, but it can suddenly escalate.

Have to keep self-care activities close to mind, and just do what I can manage physically in the day I am in. The last year has been full on, and I haven’t recovered motivation for the housekeeping very much at all, so I have established a baseline I can manage, and that will do until things change from the outside.

Have created more emotional space within our relationships also, so I am not rollercoasting as much when mr.f&h or our circumstances do.
