Lessons for the year

Lessons for the year

I actually got this thread off another site and thought what a good idea it was ... so here we go ... what lessons have I learned over the past year.

1. It is okay to be in my fifties and a bit over weight infact it can be fun. I get to eat all the naughty food I want!

2. I can cope without alcohol as a mood stabilizer. I miss it but I don't need it any more.

3. I am a princess and I can do what I bl *#dy well like!

4. It's okay that some people dont like me (like my sister). Can't change it ... why sweat it ... just move on.

5. I like my voices ... I have an angel who calls my name in the morning to wake me up she has the most angelic tone in her voice whilst I have another who growls and carries on ... not too keen on him but I am learning that he is a part of me.

Anway they are some lessons that I have learned I would love to hear what others have learned this year too. It has been a turmultuous year for many of us (me included) here I am wishing for a quieter 2018 for us all xx

Re: Lessons for the year

@NatalieS Well I was feeling really sorry for myself last night just alot of stuff going on in my head but am alot better now thanks and hearing about your young man well that is exciting. It is always nice to have attention by someone who is particularly nice and good looking as well!!!!! Particularly when you hit that certain age when you become invisible, not saying that you are but talking about this little pea.

Anyway, I am fine now thanks I cannot complain 😄

Hugs for you little @Bunniekins

you are always so supportive, which is much appreciated.

why does all that negative self-talk stuff go round and round and mess with our heads? or if our medication isn't right? Hoping you have a better night tonight.

yes, I am at that invisible age but inside I am a total child, and I don't think I'll ever grow up.

Take care.

Re: Lessons for the year

Hi, I'm new to this. My lessons for the year
1. That I cannot pretend to be 'normal' anymore! It's exhausting
2. That people say they are accepting of mental illness but they actually are not
3. I will be single for the rest of my life because of my mental illness which is sad that I won't get to love or be loved. I wouldn't know what that feels like. As soon as I mention the illness people leave.
4. On a positive note: once I accepted my illness and stayed on medication things have improved. With the help of a very good clinical psychologist.
I'm currently struggling with figuring out what I should be doing with my life. If not creating a family with kids, then what?! Working doesn't give me any sense of happiness. Currently unemployed.
I hope I haven't been too much of a downer but these are my thoughts.

Re: Lessons for the year

I LOVE this thread

I have two rare illnesses & emergency doctors make mistakes.
This year I learned that just coz I have a mental health diagnosis doesn't give doctors the right to assume they know best about my physical health issues.

Re: Lessons for the year

I love this idea for a thread. I feel ive learn a lot this year

1. ive learnt to step back from both the online and offline realm. I am not super woman. I cannot do everything so its ok to take a step back from certain things and step back up when necessary or when I feel is needed.

2. ive learnt that self care is not selfish and that its necessary to put the oxygen mask on myself before I can help others

3. ive learn many new coping strategies that have been keeping me safe.

4. I cant change those around me, I can change however myself and how I react to things.

5. I need to be comfotable within myself before dating- dating was a huge worry to me and it was something I thought I was missin out on. My time will come soon enough.

6. I have learnt hat just because I have both mental and physical illnesses I dont have to live under the label. I can still be me.

7. ive learnt to do only what I can where I can. Survival mode. I only had one mode before and that was flat out. Ive learnt to slow down and think and breathe too.

8. Trust. Ive learnt to trust a very very few people more specifically online but that its a huge step considering I trust no one and barely myself. But ive also learnt to be more weary about what I say and do to those around me.

I still have ALOT to learn but this is a start

Hi @outlander

You have learned a lot this year - this is fantastic to read and I have been there through so much of your battle. I was very glad for you when I read your list

And there will always be more to learn - there is always something else to learn - maybe one reason for our lives is that we learn

I'll just comment on the idea of dating - you are right - your time will come soon enough - I was not thinking about dating at all when I met my husband. As it turns out we were both studying at night school and intent on that and we saw each other in classes for months before we even started talking to each and we never know what is around the corner

I wish you the best Christmas possible - the first in the house with your Pop - I hope it goes the best it can for both of you
