When food replaces love...

When food replaces love...

I swore to only post upbeat banter or interesting stuff on this site when I joined and have done well to date. At least for the times I've been able to be here that is.

However this morning when I woke, my health and how I've come to be in the position I'm in flooded my thoughts and then deeply hurtful tears followed.

Physically, I feel trapped in a body that's tired, overweight and unhealthy. Psychologically, I feel trapped in a cycle of addiction - to food; my feel-good and nutritionally void drug of choice.

I've delved into this issue a multitude of times over my adult life, none more important though as my present circumstances which threatens my future and quality of life.

Through my journey, I've uncovered many reasons for my addiction, then getting to the core of why it exists. As a concept I call it - replacing love with food.

Insight is of course valuable, but what to do about it remains a constant struggle. I've done yo-yo dieting with some very successful results I might add. But when close relationships fail, my broken heart yearns yet again to be filled.

It all began in infancy when I was very ill and nearly died. I was placed in seclusion on constant watch, only touched while being bathed, changed or bottle fed. (It was the 50's) I was there for many weeks suffering with pain, fever and an unknown future.

When I finally went home, my diet consisted of high calorie food supplements (like arraroot in my bottle) to ensure I gained weight. "A fat baby's a happy baby!" As time went on, if I cried, family gave me lollies or treats to keep me happy and content fearing I'd get sick again.

Food became love, nurturing and my companion when I was alone. I never learned to self sooth in a functional way.

When I'm in a relationship, I lose weight easily. I'm motivated, happy and content to eat balanced meals and spend time being active and social. But when love's threatened or lost, I turn to my replacement medication...food.

How do you teach an old dog new tricks?

It's such an innate and powerful urge. As I've said, I know 'why' I behave this way, I just can't find a way out living alone with a MI. There aren't any detox or rehab units for people like me.

So that's my story; feeling trapped, vulnerable and stalled in a cycle of self abuse.

I needed to write this.

Hope xo

Re: When food replaces love...

Hi @hopeforme , as you say, there is hope for you.. um I am more and more often at unhealthy weight as I get older.
I spent one school holidays in about grade 5 in constantly refilled homemade biscuit tins .. and was let know about it repeatedly by older brother re weight gain. It sorted itself out but the damage was done and yes it is/was 'love'
I barely eat often these days, staring at thin people who eat in a day what I would in several . Anyway love/lack of discipline/self awareness/accountability/thought of consequences of my actions are all 'things'
I dread medicals these days but scrape thru somehow. Anyway.. I'm overtired and dirty and been a bit all over the shop. I seemed to eat all day yest and not get full. So am wary ot food today. Well there ar other addictions but Thats for another day, maybe

Hi @TAB @Former-Memberand @Zoe7

Thankyou all for taking time to respond. It sounds like the stars are aligning to get our demons out of the closet today.

Tiredness is par for the course with MI. It strikes with verocity at any given moment...bugger!

Yes @TAB people who remind us of our deficits I guess may be well meaning (?) but it does little to boost morale. I love bickies too!

Re: When food replaces love...

Hi @Hope4me ...,, and thanks for tagging me too ......

While I don't have the when-food-replaces-love addiction, I am living in close proximity to someone who absolutely does .......

I can see two aspects to this issue for you (and them) and that is -

You need to establish a new relationship with food itself ...... and this needs to come first I think ......

As Anna uralnflow-through of that new relationship, your portion sizes will naturally reduce, so don't even worry about this one for now ....... and any bi-inging behaviour will gradually resolve as well.

So ...... what is a new relationship with food ?

It's sort of like the girl who keeps choosing "the wrong type" of guy and lands in one abusive relationship after another ...... she needs to develop an new understanding of what to look for, and what to avoid, when she is meeting new guys. That doesn't make "the right type" of guy perfect ..... it just means you understand how "the wrong type" of guy operates ...... what his honey-trap is ..... and "the right type" of guy doesn't use one of those. He doesn't need to, and is appalled at how "the wrong type" of guy treats women ..... may even have seen it in his own family and knows what it is and how to avoid being one ......

Anyway, back to food ......

I am going to offer you some suggestions ..... if you can relate to them and want to give it a go, feel free to substitute with your own choices of food.

Okay ...... when you are next shopping, buy a small punned of strawberries and a small tub of creme fraise ...... just those two small amounts, so that is all of them you have in the house.

Then .... put the strawberries into a bowl, hulking them and cutting them in halves, or quarters if they are big. Sprinkle a tiny amount of sugar across them, and leave them sitting out (covered loosely with a cloth if need be) on the kitchen bench.

The sugar will make the juices run, and intensify the strawberry aroma. When you come back, pick the bowl up and notice ...... th colour of the strawberries now ...... the colour of the run juices ...... how much juice has run ...... put the bowl up to your nose and gently take in a deep breath, smelling how aromatic they now are .....

Then ...... put the bowl back down and go set yourself a place at the table as if you are expecting a special visitor ..... use the best crockery and cutlery you have in the house - if you only have one set, doesn't matter - you understand the principle ..... and maybe pick a couple of flowers and stick them in a case or glass ...... this is for you ...... make it count ......

Serve a small amount of the creme fraise, and eat mindfully of the textures and flavours ..... as slowly as you can manage while still making it enjoyable ..... finding some joy in it is the key .......

The next time you go shopping, choose something else ....... maybe mushrooms with butter an a dash of balsamic vinegar ...... experiment .......

Don't even worry about what is happening with you and food in other directions. This is a marathon, not a sprint ...... and you are learning to be a true "foodie". Slowly, slowly, you will find your relationship with food changing.

Take yourself out for coffee ...... take the time to smell it ..... ask for cream one day and try that ..... order an affogato and see if you like it ......

If these things are too costly, save for a single experience, or substitute ......

Eat a breakfast cereal that is flakes of grain, and t y to catch that pint between too crunchy and too soggy ...... and whether honey and pine-nuts / crushed almonds makes them even better ......

That's my advice, and I am hoping it works well for you .....

Re: When food replaces love...

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope

I like those examples - I will try some of these myself - I am rather reluctant to try new food - habit from childhood I think and I have broken away from my mother's fears of many things and tried Italian and Chinese food through time

So what you have said can go for anyone - and a really great idea for a thread

And all the best @Hope4me - I started smoking when I was getting angry with a bf I had a long time ago - that was not the best idea I had in my life and quit sometime after we broke up - but yes - the wrong guy can cause us to react in ways that are not in our best interest
