Mountain madness

Mountain madness

early days being diagnosed with bipolar disorder spending time in a mental health unit adjusting to meds thinking that mental health advice had to be adhered to when after years embracing risky ideas And behavior I had started my own business And challenged myself every step of the way, lack of sleep and all made shit load of friends and partied like tomorrow never was to come <br>It seems life was an awesome buzz and some heavy down times In between, but unable to manage my own life and relationships contemplating suicide at times when there was nothing to be down about I was failing on a personal level every time so I turned back to get assistance hoping I wouldn't end up alone because of this I found a Psycologist I felt comfortable with then Psyciatrist who just threw medication at me and assumed I would keep taking it religiously and not self medicate ;Then the Psycologist left town to private practice all I seemed to do is a heap of K10 forms and hand over my trust to a professional who I don't trust and who can't see the complexity in living with this for 10 years now other than mind numbing meds being the answer I gave up on psychology And medication I felt like an idiot that was paying more than I had to learn behavior therapy I can't sustain
;Lesson learnt my demons hate exercise so I punish them with it couple that with late night down hill sk8 pushes my anxiety and desire for risk &
;I climb mountains most days but sometimes i have to sit at the bottom and recognize its a huge mountain and I ain't a mountain goat

Re: Mountain madness

@Drewbola It is a difficult life, this living with bi polar, having lived with it since proabbly my mid teens, certainly my mid twenties nd not being 'diagnosed' until my early mid 50's (just last year) I have struggled with GP's and Psychologists for years. Being on anti-depressants and counselling as the only line of defence for 20+ years, I have learned MANY useful life skills and tools, tips and tricks for managing my condition (but that management is always barely 'enough' or not enough when I am full flight hypomanic or full sorrow meloncholic.)

I get alot of help from reading too, not just books about bi polar, rather things like mindfulness, staying present getting over shame, having courage etc. Every new reading gives me a little new something to apply to my life's circumstances. AND - it feels like I am more in charge of my own life than just relying on those times I can see a doc or psych.

I rock around from well to unwell in days and hours and weeks (not months and years) so usually I ONLY present to my doc when depressed or anxious, that is why it took so long to diagnose because we only ever discussed the deep depressions and crippling anxieties. I think while we can hope to expect our doctors to get a handle on our conditions, that it is us who has to get the full handle and be informed and make suggestions too about what may be of assitance to us. Doctors have a hard life too - they get to see people for 12 minutes, can only know what they know - and have to skill up and learn about so much. We can help them by being well informed and making suggestions too.

Being alone in an isolated area, or just being bi polar anywhere is a huge challenge, I wish you well and am glad to have met you here, I like you writing style and sens eof humour too. Billy Goats! @-karma- mentioned my poem on living with Bi Polar ... here: http://mentalas.saneforums.org/t5/Our-experience-stories/A-Poem-On-living-with-bi-polar-affective-disorder/m-p/36836#M6143

Maybe one way to move through and get your thoughts in order would be to attend to your prodigious writing talent and try to instill in essential form the experience of your life...

It seems the most rational thing to do in a crazy world is laugh at it.

Re: Mountain madness

I totally agree and often use the same stipulation ... "with" ... yes accepting our weirding ways ...

I have seen too many hurt by being excluded from laughter or being the butt ... I wasnt paranoid about it tho ... I was serious and studied it in the library at uni when I was young ... as I didnt 'get' laughter at all...

But my kids broke through to me as they tried to get me to laugh ... how beautiful is that...

my son has a great sense of humour and is getting kinder and more inclusive with it day by day

Re: Mountain madness

I guess like racism issues ... it is only when we are self aware and generate it ourselves ... I have found it interesting that women comedians are rising too ... it used to be a much more male fiedl ...we take control and there are great comedians who specifically use their own disability ... eg Stella Young ... Faye on Q & A

One needs a bit of distance and perspective to be able to do it and it is not always appropriate ... but it does have a place
