Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Hi all.

It's been a while since i have been in forums of this nature. I remember years ago the MSN chat rooms, they were not good places, all that happened were people posting inappropriate stuff and others getting triggered.

Anyways...

I have struggled with depression throughout my life, some times worse than others. I have also experienced some trauma in my life. When I was 14, i experienced the onset of bipolar disorder, it was a pretty scary time.

These days, and three breakdowns later, i think i am doing ok. For me anyway. Not perfect, far from it, but better than i was a while back.

Some of the things that i really struggle with now are crap doctors. Psychiatrists if i am specific. I have always kept that to myself in these forums because i don't want to discourage others from seeking help if they need it (and in that regard i should add that most of my experiences have been positive overall) but there are some really toxic ones around and there are experiences that leave people scarred and unable/unwilling to seek out that help again at their most desperate point. I feel it's a discussion that needs ot be had. The issue needs to be flagged and brought into the light by orgs such as Sane and others.

I had a bad experience this year. I wish i never saw her. I don't think she was/is an evil person, i just think they get to a point where they don't pay attention, where they can be flippant, careless, indifferent or just burnt out. Some of the ones who have been around for a while can also become really cynical, to the point they look at you with suspicion like youi're lying about your condition or the extent of what you are going through or the meds you are on. Psychs deal with some really heavy stuff and i guess in some way they have to mentally and emotionally remove themselves from their "work self", i do get that, but i don't know what support is around for them to make sure they are giving their clients appropriate care and not leaving them worse than when they came in the door.

So i saw this psych in May, and i had seen my old psych before her at the end of last year. I have made an appointment with my old one for next month but i am seriously considering cancelling it... i was pressured into making the appointment by hospital staff (not psych hospital, but where i recently had a baby) and i don't mind my old one, he is ok... no miracle worker but he isn't toxic so that's good enough for me these days. What will happen is that i will pay a tidy sum for him to ask me common sense questions and try to tweak my meds. The thing is, i already know i can't take certain meds because i am breastfeeding my newborn baby. Those are the meds he would prefer me to be on, which i haven't been on because i have been pregnant or trying to get pregnant. I can't go on them anyway, so we will have that conversation and i will leave his rooms the same way i went in. No worse, no better, just the same, and there's nothing he can do really because of my current circumstances.

My psychologist wanted me to try a new psych, but she works at a hospital that the toxic one from May has some connection with and i feel like i need ot avoid all places this other psych works at.

Sorry for the rant. Am just really tired of all this, and praying to God that i don't have another breakdown in my life because i don't know if i couold handle trying to get help again and encountering another toxic human when i am feeling so vulnerable. Sorry if this triggers anyone. I feel like i have nowhere to express this...

Great link @CannonSalt

psych evaluation by clients ... is starting

I read a couple about my son's psych that rang true and keep me on a quiet alert.

Yes I know there are horses for courses .. but people's pain and tragedies should not be a cash cow

Thanks - it was written by Gordon Parker, "an expert in mood disorders, founder of the Black Dog Institute and Scientia Professor at the University of New South Wales." I wish that information on patient rights was as readily available as "What is depression?" leaflets. I'm glad that you were able to find evaluations of your son's psych, and keep an eye on them.

Excellent link, @CannonSalt, thanks for sharing!

I, too, wish there was more attention for this side of therapy. The stuff that's aimed towards people who are in pain - the ones who haven't yet been in to therapy - is all geared towards getting them to see a therapist. They are bombarded with messages like "There IS help available!" When you take the time to really stop and think about that slogan, you realize that it isn't making any promises about the specific therapist you will end up striking yourself. But the way it's used gives people that once they step across the threshold of the therapist's office, your back on track to a happy life. And it's so easy to believe because you dearly want to believe that it's true.

I would be surprised if many people on the verge of seeking therapy strike anything resembling a significant warning about what they may be letting themselves in for. And as I say, most of them are probably so desperate for solutions that you would really have to be shouting that warning pretty clearly in order to get them to take notice.

As it is, by the time a patient realizes they might be in a bad situation (therapy-wise) the damage may already have been done.

I think that's something that all soon-to-be therapy patients ought to be advised: not only is there a chance that this treatment won't make things better for you, there's also a real risk that it may actually make things worse. Before you go in, make sure you have a way out, just incase you need it.

I think the field is still new and protocols for checks and balances need to be developed .. which is what gives me the motivation to post ...its not just complaining ... I am glad that there are many who are websavvy ... keep these conversations going

I guess the challenge is how to reform the Mental Health System to be more empowering to patients when sometimes this is met by great resistance by some Psychiatrists.

Re: Jaded towards psychiatrists, but hopeful

Exactly @ivana

It is not only patient "resistance" that can be a problem....

glad I spent a lot of time colour coding resistors when doing electronics with my deceased brother ... long before I encountered psychoanalytic transference theory .. which is pretty airy fairy ... not truly that scientific or "objective" ...

I believe currently even peer workers on US sites are having credibility problems within workplace ... tho I think peer workers are a good move...

If you know some personal information about your psych, like last name and the suburb they practice in, you can look them up on the public Australian Health Practictioner Register Agency. You can find out their educational background, if they speak languages other than English, and when they started practicing, as well as if they've got any current proceedings against them by the HCCC.

Yep thanks @CannonSalt .... I found some -ve reviews about son's psych ... which kinda rang true ... so we have discussed him as not the life-saving doctor on a pedestal ... but a flawed human being with particular motives and only limited understanding ... but whom we will go along with as we are in public system.

lol

Yes, women can be very bitchy to each other!!

My complete experience is women being bad to each other!! Ms @Appleblossom I must be honest that you dont act like a 55 year old. your more positive and refreshing in your outlook, not jaded at all.

I am forbidden of writing of my husbands experiences but can write of my own.

What I like about you @Appleblossom is that we have known each other for a while now and I like your way of thinking and one person who I feel I undertand a lot.

My first two psychotherapists were very caught up in the transference thing. I can now honestly write that after many years of therapy, I can write that they were both not right. Thankfully, the first therapist got me away from a bad realtionship, my first husband and then four years of working out why I neded to keep on being in a really bad nasty relationship, I couldnt get away. It was like I was attracted to the bad elements of men.

It is weird, Im in a mutually complimentary relationship. but it took 18 years of therapy....most of the time 2-3 times per week. Until 2003, with could I state......abusive psychotherapists.....
