Re: which anti depression tablets work

Hi @Shaz51,

Finding the right medication can be tricky as there are many factors to consider. People will have different reactions to different types of medications because of their physiology make-up, health, drug interaction, age and so on. What works for some, may not work for others. For this reason, we encourage people to speak with their health practioner.

In the Community Guidelines, we ask that members only share info about medication that is very general, which means that the specifics such as the names of medication and dosages cannot be named.

That said, it is ok for people to talk about experiences of medication such as, finding a doctor, what to do if they aren't working, and talking about anti-depressenants very broadly rather than a specific one.

Is your partner currently taking meds, or have they every taken meds?

Hope we can provide some helpful info.

Re: which anti depression tablets work

Hi @Shaz51
I got really lucky with medication. My GP suggested I try (common anti-depressant), which helped my mood immensely. I have had my dose upped twice, to help with my depression, which has since been relabeled as BPD.
I am now on the same anti-depressant, with a mood stabiliser added.
When I say I got lucky with medication, the first one worked for me, with little to no side effects. I knkw that is not the case for many people, but I think it should be known that you can have no ill effects. I was terrified of taking medication after hearing horror stories, and my own experience of my mother on medication while I growing up.

Medication can be very helpful, I'd say a life saver even. However in my experience, I feel like medication should go with some form of talk therapy.

Heya @Crazy_Bug_Lady

CBL you bring a great point that finding the talking therapies and medication works for you. Can you tell us a bit more about this? I mean, how do they compliment each other - could you tell us what it would be like to have one and not the other?

Re: which anti depression tablets work

Hey,
A few years ago I got an infection (SH related) and had to see a GP. That was the first time I'd been to a doctor in years. He worked out what had happened, and mentioned the possibility of seeing a psychologist, which I was dead against (I grew up inable to express emotions, why start now?), or maybe medication (I saw what happened to my mother, no way that was gonna be me).
I finally relented and saw a psychologist, who I have been seeing regularly for nearly 3 years.
3 months later, we decided that I needed some extra help, and antidepressants were prescribed.
Last year I was referred to a psychiatrist, who diagnosed me with BPD, and I have been seeing her, and my psychologist since.

For me, I don't feel medication is helpful by itself. Yes, it helps me not feel as depressed. Yes, it's helped my mood.
Therapy has helped me understand that the way I think is disordered. It is also helping me understand *why* I think like I do, and feel like I do. It is also helping me to see things from a different perspective.

I am enormously frustrated that the rules mean we can't name specific medications because I believe I can offer helpful advice on this account. Anyway, I wonder if I can mention that when all else fails, the MAOI range of medications (so not mentioning specifics drugs 🙂 can be completely lifesaving if you can adhere to the diet. It's much less rigid than it used to be.

Re: which anti depression tablets work

Hi @Helena0983
It can be frustrating at times having to be non-specific with medication and other things I know.
In saying that, I understand.
The stuff I read on the medication I was prescribed was downright scary. And as I was already against medication, that put me off for a long time.
I think it's important to remember that everyone has different reactions to different medication.
I have a friend on a lower dose of medication (A), that I am on. I have no side effects, where it makes her incredibly tired and spacy.
Likewise, the same medication that made my mother sleep all day when taken in the morning, keep me awake, so I *need* to take them in the morning.
