The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Not good all that stress and no sleep hun @outlander. I hope it's behind you soon enough.

I got up mid morning because I had such an unsettled sleep last night. And then it's been a bit busy and stressful since then. My laptop still didn't work this morning so I had to find someone to fix it without charging me a fortune. I found someone by looking at my community fb group & took the laptop to him. He thinks it needs a new hard drive, that it's on its way out. It strangely worked when I got to his place, but it was still slow. So I brought the laptop home as he needed to go get the part. He's coming by my home to collect the laptop tommorow to collect it and repair it.

I came home and had to send an email about some problems with the nurse refresher course. That took a while as I had to screen shot the problem questions, transfer them to a word document, find supporting data for one of the problems, and attach it to the email. Time consuming.

Then I went for a walk with my neighbour, and we got a coffee on the way.

Then two meetings back to back! Today was supposed to be a catch up day for other things. Which didn't happen. So it's been quite a frustrating, stressful day. There's also a problem with my NDIS plan, so some days are just too much to deal with. I know you understand this all too well.

So sorry my phone went dead and was trying to find a charger to fit, mum got home 10 minutes early so ive just got back home. I was going to shower but im thinking one in the morning will be better.

Thats a bugger about the laptop, hopefully its not to expensive to fix. Things always seem to break right when we need them they most hey!

It does sound like a frustrating day indeed, hopefully student support will return your emails fairly quickly so you can finish the questions up.

Was the walk with your neighbour ok? Or more of a venting session on their behalf again?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I've passed the questions and course @outlander. I did it so that other students wouldn't struggle with the some of the questions like I did.

Yes, I probably need a shower tommorow. It's been a few days. And need to do my dressing changes again.

The walk with my neighbour was a venting session again!! Sigh! But I needed the walk.

I'm just trying to clean up the laptop and 'hide' sensitive documents in a cloud folder. The MSN who is going to fix it will save everything before changing over the hard drive, but I also don't know him that we'll, and I don't want to loose everything either. He's self taught with computer repairs, not a specialist. Still going to cost a couple of hundred dollars to fix.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I knew you would pass @Sans911 🥳 glad youve emailed to help future students too though.

How are your wounds healing now? Are they getting much better? Probably still slowly but hopefully not reopening now?

Oh dear, another venting session. :face_with_rolling_eyes:😫 itd be nice if you could just go for a nice walk instead

Hopefully the guy is ok with it. About once a month any new documents and things i have on the computer gets put onto my external hardrive. I always worry itll crash and ill loose al the photos and things i have.

Do you have much on tomorrow besides the computer, shower and dressing changes?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Sorry that MSN should have been man! Damn autocorrect.

My wounds are actually open @outlander & have been since my surgeries. That's the issue--they won't close. The right side is nearly there now. The left is still quite stagnant, and possibly worse. It just won't close.

I haven't been able to save stuff on my external hard drive as it's corrupted. And I can't afford a new one. I wanted the man to look at that too but I can't find it. It's been a very long time since I have an have been able to use it so I think it's in a box in the shed somewhere. So in the 'too hard' area to try to locate it.

I have my support worker again tommorow for 2 hours. He comes Tues & Thurs for 2hours each.

I can't remember if there's anything else I have to do. I usually look in my diary in the morning.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Oh they are taking there sweet time closing! @Sans911 sounds like the on on the right is starting to heal which is a start at least. Hopefully the left side follows suit soon.
Are they able to restitch or something to help more with healing or more just Waiting it out now?

Gosh thursdays tomorrow i keep forgetting my days now that they blur into one
Hope your support worker helps you, maybe go for a nice walk with him to get a break....

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Can't do anything with the wounds at all! Not even further surgery. They just have to close on their own. How ever long that takes which is now in the 7th month! The left was where I had a skin graft from my leg, and the stitch line opened up. But although that has essentially closed there are still 7 small, open wounds along the suture lines. The right actually wasn't a problem until about a month after the surgery. And also it involved a breakdown on the suture lines. I actually asked my plastic surgeon to remove both boobs and make me flat but then I would have just restarted another problem with a new set of wounds. And of course she refused outright. In many ways I wished I never had the surgery at all. I know that would have likely resulted in the cancer spreading, becoming metastatic and eventually taking my life, but this has been soul destroying. I hate the way I look, and there's no way I'll ever have another relationship. Ever!!

Yes my support worker is alright. He's a good listener but I feel sorry for him because I probably talk waaay too much @outlander. I can prattle a lot!

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I have so many documents on my computer and in drive to sort out @outlander. I didn't realise how much there I'd to do. Too daunting to tackle tonight but obviously will need doing soon
