The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Hi Hun @Snowie

How is your day so far? I have had my support worker here for a couple of hours. We went for a small walk to get a coffee (and brownie-yum!). I was supposed to have an online meeting just after he left, but only 2 people besides the host showed up, so she is rescheduling until Friday.

My pdoc rang me earlier today too, and is putting me back on prn medication to help me sleep. She doesn't thing it is really necessary to go back on antidepressants just yet because maybe adequate sleep will be enough. I talk to her again in 2 weeks.

I don't have anything else today as I finished my nursing course yesterday. I do need to email them this afternoon though as there were a number of problems with some modules not having the right information to be able to answer the tests fairly.

Mr A is on top of the tall boy asleep. He sleeps when I am awake and is awake when I am trying to sleep-sigh!!

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I am glad you still get to see your support worker @Sans911 Still have that human contact.

Hoping the prn meds help with your sleep and you can get back into a regular sleep schedule. It it super hard when it is out of whack.

I remember you sayin he other day not all the answers where in the reading material. Hopefully this will be rectified for the next people doing this course.

Those fur babies rule of lives! Of course he is asleep. Perhaps you need to start sleeping when he does! They really have a good life.

I had my course today via zoom. It was nice catching up with people even if it was just over the net. Have been talking about schema's (child and adult modes) and Neuroplasticity. Was actually really interesting. Going to continue with it next week. Of course Izzy slept most of the day next to me!

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

What is the course you are doing @Snowie ? Sorry, you have possibly told me, and I have likely forgotten. Is it very long? And it does sound very interesting. Schema therapy is something I am looking at doing for myself, but it might have to wait until this pandemic is over. Yes, even human contact via video is better than none. Especially if it's peers.

Pets definitely rule our lives! Mine and yours! Bless sweet Izzy.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The course is called Supporting Trauma and Recovery. It is through the same place that I did the DBT course through. It has 3 modules to it and each module goes for 7 weeks. I am doing the second module at the moment.

We have been talking about schemas for about the last 2 weeks. It is interesting and I am finding the schemas good. I can identify the schemas prevalent in myself and its about looking at ways to try and change your thinking/behaviour around those schemas.

It is based a lot on childhood and how schemas develop through our early life experiences.

I find the topics very heavy and to some extent triggering, but that is where you use your DBT skills to help. We start and end with some mindfulness so that is helpful too.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Wow, it sounds like a really good course @Snowie . I can understand it being triggering, even learning DBT was when I first started with (I had to leave for a while & then pick it up later). It is so good though when you learn and understand why you act or behave the way you do. I hope it helps to you to understand that there are some things well out of your control as a child (and even as an adult) and often the ways we learn to cope as a child carry into adulthood if no one helps up to change those patterns. It is only when we understand why that we can change. You are doing great things hun. Keep going. It takes a long time to change but sometimes there are light bulb moments of realisation that make you feel like things might be getting a little easier.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

To do this course at this place @Sans911 you had to of have done DBT first. I think because of some of the things we look at and learn you especially need the distress tolerance skills.

It was really interesting today about the Neuroplasticity and how the brain can form new connections throughout life. It allows for the brain to compensate for injury/trauma and adjust to new situations or changes. I found that maybe their is some hope for me yet.

Not sure how all this will hel when I am in crisis, but I guess I'll get to that!!

Will be back in awhile hun, just have to go make tea.

Back now @Sans911

Have you got much planned for tomorrow?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

What's for dinner in your house tonight @Snowie ? Do I get on a plane and join you? I actually saw in the news today that there is a real possibilty that Virgin Airlines might collapse. They have asked the governement for a huge bailout but that would also mean the government owning the airline-not a good thing.

Nothing much on tommorow. Just a couple of online meetings. I am hosting one of the meetings and doing a guided meditation. Like I used to do face to face. It is so strange to already be talking about 'life used to be like this...' or 'when we met in person before'.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Lasagna for tea @Sans911 You are welcome to come, I've got enough for you too 😉

Just heating it up in the oven now. I find after my course I am too tired to cook so it was all ready to go.

Hoprfully people turn up for the online meetings. I would love to do a guided meditation with you online. I should look over here to see if anyone does it. I find it hard to do myself and find it easier if I have someone to follow. I normally just look on youtube for them.

Life certainly does look different these days. I wonder if/when it will be ever back to like it used to be. I hope it does, I don't want the kids home for too long!!
