The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Well done @Sans911 - passed this time with flying colours 👍

I have actually slept most of today. It might mean a later night tonight but I really needed it. Tobes has been snuggled in with me, laying above me on the couch or laying right on top of me - so he has been very close all day. Unfortunately I am not feeling very well - I wasn't yesterday morning either but I picked up throughout the day. Very much hoping it is just the exhaustion and running on empty causing it and more rest/sleep will help. I don't plan on doing much for the next couple of days - more rest, a little housework (if I can be bothered), cut Toby's hair and lots of fur baby cuddles.

No Easter eggs for us this year @Snowie @Sans911 - can't visit my family so no point buying them (plus I am broke again until pay day). I would love to visit my sister especially to see her new kitten again but now she lives further away I can't go with the restrictions. I do miss having her so close - we used to see each other most weeks - and I could call around any day - now we have to plan visits ...so much not the same.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

That's so sad you can't see your sister @Zoe7. It's not the same by phone (or even video) is it?

It doesn't feel like Easter at all. Too quite. We have internal state borders so no one can travel very far from home. And they're being encouraged not to travel either. We have done relatively well to keep our infected numbers from exploding.

Mr A has settled a little @Snowie although he still likes me close. He's always been like that but a bit more so now. He seems to have a bit more Sass and character. But sometimes he does things that make me think of Jasper. Like running up against the back of my legs. Everytime I was in the kitchen Jasper would be a big smooch just to see what he got get!

She used to bring her dog around too @Sans911 so I miss him too. He is a real smoochy dog too - he is a bulldog but I am sure he thinks he is the size of Toby because he loves sitting on your lap (kindof with his size). So I miss them both and of course I want to see the new kitten - he is gorgeous with a real attitude.

You must be missing Jasper so much Hon. I am glad you still have Mr A but it does not fill that gap from your other fur baby ....hugs and hugs and hugs to you.

Hopefully @Zoe7 it is just tiredness. You must have needed the sleep today hun.

@Sans911I hope you are getting lots of cuddle time with Mr A. Sounds like he likes being closer to you.

It is funny how our fur babies act sometimes. He must be missing Jasper too.

It definitely wont be a late night for me. Hopefully I cn last till about 8!!! My bed is already calling out to me 😒

I hope so too @Snowie It's not unusual to get sick in the first week of holidays but really hoping I can avoid that this week - plenty of fluids and rest and see if that helps.

I hope you can sleep well Hon

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

There are reminders of Jasper everywhere @Zoe7. Plastic bags he's chewed. His bowl, his food tin. Every now and then I will across something of his or what he's done. I kept a little of his fur - one peice black and one white plus I made a paw print.

Mr A doesn't like being up @Snowie too much, but he has to lay beside me or he rubs his face in my hand or face, so he shows cuddles & affection in other ways.

The kitten will be so different and bigger by the time you see him @Zoe7. I was looking back at jasper's pics and he changed quite a bit.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I still have the cage I had for my previous cat with some of her things in it. I also have a box of her toys and things - would not let Cat have any of them @Sans911 - bought all new things for her. I can certainly empathise with having Jasper's things around or finding things he has done though - I had one spot under my bed that I did not vacuum because my previous cat slept there - I no longer have that though because I moved, I also have a paw print that I have a small plaster cast of and photos everywhere. She was such a beautiful little cat and I really did get super lucky finding Cat as well - both my cat babies have been gorgeous.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Jasper used to think that anything that was for Mr A was his as well @Zoe7. So they shared most of their toys but Jasper had a voile of favourites. And I couldn't give him any fishing or wand toys because he would chew the wand! I miss the playfulness the both of them used to have which I realised that Jasper didn't play much after 6months. He must have felt horrible at times.

I think we all think our bests are gorgeous. But yes your girl is a beautiful floofy.

Have you gone to bed @Snowie?

@outlander where are you tonight lil Sis?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

awww @Sans911 I think your boys are (were) gorgeous too but you are right we do wear rose coloured glasses when it comes to our own fur babies. My sisters little cat was gorgeous too - she had a squishy face, was small, all black and snuggly. She had no problems with the dogs (my sister's or Toby) but would put them in their place too. Much like your poor little Jasper - she went downhill really quickly and was just not strong enough to keep going after her operstion (but she tried so hard). I am glad my sister has this new little kitten becsuse as much as she loves her dog she also missed the snuggles with her cat.

Jasper will always be with you Hon - he was one lucky cat to have you as his mummy and you will never forget all those beautiful things he did that gave you so much joy.

No, still awake @Sans911

Was just doing the dishes from tea.

Trying to last a bit longer or else I will wake up too early tomorrow.

Believe it or not @Sans911 @Zoe7 , I have never owned a cat. Only dogs, fish, horse, turtle, birds, chickens, rabbits and mice!
