The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

So lovely of you @Sans911 to help your friend with their car. It is those small things that you do consistently for others that show the wonderful person you are

The news about Jasper does not seem really good. You are in a difficult position as I am sure you would get the specialist ultrasound straight away if you could find the funds to do so. I wish I could send you the money Hon Cat was the same as Jasper before her operation - she had lost a lot of weight and was not eating - luckily Jasper is still eating so feed him up and hope he puts that weight back on. It is so horrible when our fur babies are unwell so I really feel for you.

I am pleased to hear Mr A has bounced back though - one less worry for you.

I don't know whether you know or not but there is a vet bill help site https://www.vetpay.com.au/ where you can apply for help to pay the vet bills and has a payment plan to pay it back - maybe worth a look to see if that would help you get the specialist ultrasound and cover other expenses. Also worth asking if you can pay off your vet bills over time - I am lucky enough to have a compassionate vet that allows me to do that ...no harm in asking.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I know you'll likely be asleep at this time but I wanted to post to let you know I'm OK. I haven't had time to not be OK! Read on.

It's just been a stupidly, full on few days where I've barely had time to breathe!
And today was supposed to be relaxing but I dealt with 2 emergencies within half an hour. And no they weren't my emergencies but I witnessed and assisted with them.

Yesterday I was busy all day. I had a library trip in the morning. Then I met up with another volunteer to go over some technology issues she's been having.

It was the op shop after that which was busy with donations but not customers. And when I finished I came home to prepare some potato salads for my op shop picnic today (my boss arranged for everyone as an end of year gathering).

So I was up late last night. In fact I've been up late most of the week. Not sleeping too well again.

Then I was up earlier than I usually am this morning to finish the salads. I also had to go pick up 2 people on the way.

So we're enjoying our BBQ picnic in the park today and all of a sudden these kids on bikes go flying past us. I noticed a handbag dangling off the handlebar so I yelled out for anyone nearby to give chase or knock them off. A man (not connected to our group) ran after them for a little way but they were too fast. It was shortly after a lady in our group realised it was hers. She had hung it on the bench seat next to her leg. Unfortunately her house keys and licence were inside. To cut a long story short she got her handbag back after someone discovered it with the contents tipped out (and keys missing). She had to go home to change her locks 😕

Not long after this incident one of the men in the group became really unwell. He had an accident last night in his home and thought he broke his ribs. So he took extra of his strong pain medication to ease his pain.

He looked really horrid at one point, so I thought it best to call an ambulance. He soon refused that and requested I take him home. I refused to do, and took him to hospital instead. They were very concerned about him, but he's gone home this evening.

So I didn't really get to eat much, or enjoy the other volunteers company. And I had a big clean up to do when I got home plus feeding the cats as well.

And because I'm selling a friend's car (another long story) I've had lots of enquiries and 2 people came to view the car tonight. It looks like it might be sold by the morning.

I didn't want to be this busy these last few days, but in a way it's been OK. I've not had time to think about myself at all. That's something I get so fed up with. And my sh/si have been really strong, so no time to even think about that either. I know my pyschologist was so concerned last week she asked me to consider hospital or some other facility, but I refused and she respected my decision.

This week is a busy one too, and while I'm OK with that keeping me on the level, I need to be mindful of my physical limitations. Emotionally, I'm feeling a little stretched and slightly overwhelmed right now. I'm very wired too so it's going to be difficult to get to sleep.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Wow what a few days you have had @Sans911 - on the positive side it has kept your mind busy and whilst it may be physically exhausting at least you have not had time to have those sh/si thoughts.

It is such a shame though you did not get to enjoy the BBQ - especially after you put so much effort in yourself but I am glad you were there to help with the ill man.

Even though this week is a busy one too for you look after yourself when you can Hon - small moments to rest, eat well and allow your mind to switch off when you can ...easier said than done I know but we need our Sans around

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes I'm trying to do those three things @Zoe7 but I'm not very good at the last two.

I don't know why I go through these stages of intense si/sh urges. Like a pressure valve that needs release. I thought my holiday would be enough to take care of that but it hasn't. It's like my mind is fixated on this path, and won't deviate until I do something about it. I can stay safe for now but I also can't keep up this pace of busyness either. I don't know then what might happen.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

It is really hard when you know that it is just on hold for now whilst you are so busy but is always in the back of your mind - and when you have time to stop then it will be present again @Sans911 I wish I had some answers for you but have been there myself and know there is not much more we can do to get rid of those thoughts when they are so strong. You have also gone from a really relaxing week away to being super busy and that can often make us feel like nothing has changed really quickly ...but then being home and doing nothing would not be the best idea either ...really hard to deal with Hon. I know you are much like me and hospital is not an option - would actually make things worse ...so for now maybe being busy is a good thing.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Sorry to put that on you @Zoe7 but I've not spoken to anyone about it, not even my pyschologist. Thank you for listening with your eyes.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

It is absolutely no worry at all @Sans911 Happy to be here for you Hon It really is a tough position to be in but it is also good that you are aware of where your head is at and that keeping busy is helping right now. The next step is to look after yourself along the way and try not to run yourself into the ground until you reach breaking point. Then when you finally do stop and have that time where those thoughts may become prominent again we can help you through it.
