The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

New furniture is always nice Hopefully your new bed will be comfortable. I actually have an antique bed with a metal spring base. Very heavy to move but comfortable.

I'm glad to hear that you are safe for now from the threat of bush fires. It's so scary seeing it all from over here.

Yesterday afternoon was very busy in the op shop with lots of donations. I stayed back for an hour with the manager so at least the start of today wouldn't be so bad. When I got home I was completely exhausted. I had cereal for dinner and was in bed before 8pm. I slept 9 hours but it was a very restless sleep.

Today I saw my GP. I had bloods done yesterday and sure enough my iron levels have dropped to low levels again. I'm not surprised. I'll have my iron infusion in a few weeks as my GP is away until then. She's quite concerned about my mh too, but accepts that I'm managing the best way I can for now. There was a hope that the holiday would be a reset or shift, but it wasn't. I enjoyed the break, and it was good in some ways, but my SI remains high as does the urges to sh. I got told by my manager at the op shop that I upset someone during the renovations. They thought I was being a little too bossy. That really stung a lot.

Today I caught up with my foster sister as she's in the city staying with her son and his family. She's not working right now as it's school holidays (she's a library assistant in a school) so she's come to help out with the grandchildren. I had lunch and stayed for a while before coming home. She thinks I'm doing really well and look good so I'm not going to tell her the truth. No one in my circle of family and friends has any idea of how I really am. I just tell them what they want to hear.

Then I had my volunteer walk this afternoon which was nice. But I struggled with my energy levels & would have much rather stayed at home.

I'm outside just finishing my dinner atm. The cats are out here too enjoying the last half hour of daylight.

That's a long post from me @outlander

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

your bed sounds lovely @Sans911
I had a plain white wooden one but ive now got a leather like one. I really needed an upgrade so this was nice and come with a brand new mattress as well.

weve actually had quite abit of rain and its raining again tonight. quite heavy and stormy as well so reception here is dropping in and out a little. not complaining though its bringing heavy rain and that's exactly what we need.

im glad your gp can see through the 'im fine' mask. its hard for others to understand it and can make it tricky to be around anyone when they don't get it or you have to put in the extra effort to look fine. my gp and my nurse cant see past the mask anymore. its not a good thing though unfortunately and makes it hard to say im struggling.
your time with your sister sounds nice though but also challenging.

low iron levels don't sound very good, is there a chance you can go on something like iron suppliments to try and keep it in a normal range once you've had the infusions?
once your iron levels are normal again will you have abit more energy for your walks as well?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Your bed sounds lovely @outlander. Maybe you'll sleep a bit better now.

That's not good about your GP and nurse not recognising when you're not OK.

Yay for the rain. It's something we don't see too much of here anymore.

I'm not that great with iron supplement meds. They don't make me feel very well. So I guess it'll be iron infusions every 6months for some time until I can maintain the levels with my diet. That requires considerable effort and motivation.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

the mattress isn't to comfy surprisingly but itll do @Sans911 2 of the slats came off and I nearly fell head first down the back of the bed 🤷‍♀️😬😳😂 i didn't clip them on properly but they are on now so I don't think there'll be any more mishaps.

that rain has brought on so much relief. a lot of my fb atm is being lit up by 'yay its raining' sorts of posts.

mm iron suppliments don't sound very good. maybe you could see a dietician to help you with your diet and what foods are good to increase it?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Silly question but did you 'test' the mattress in the store? @outlander. Hopefully it will be more comfortable as time goes on. Oops to the slat mishap.

I've had anaemia issues most of my life. So I know what to do diet wise (sorry not trying to come over nasty to you). My issue is the inadequacy of my diet right now due to my depression that makes me apathetic and demotivated. There's no desire to cook a healthy meal and often I lack an appetite.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Nah i brought it off catch.com @Sans911 this mattress had good reviews but im not liking it at all. Its like the springs are in the wrong places so when i lay down there are big dips between my back and the mattress itself. Like the gaps between the springs are crumpling in. A good mattress topper might fix it abit. I paid almost 200 for this mattress so it honestly should be really good but to send it back and get a different sort would cost more then getting a good mattress topper. I might contact the supplier though and see what happens...

Not coming across as nasty at all 👍 makes perfect sense. I struggle to even have one meal a day. I have to cook cause of pop but i d ont have much motivation either esp since hes very fussy and i cant eat half the things i use to. And no appetite makes it even harder.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Does it not come with a trial period like of 30days? And do you have to pay shipping to exchange or return it? That would be the kicker like you say. The mattress I currently has is second hand & thankfully it's comfortable.

It's so hard to cook for a fussy person. He's lucky to have you care for him as he'd probably not bother otherwise. Yes, it's much harder for you now to get adequate nutrition. It's such a shame things went pear shaped for you. You have to live with the outcome every single day. 😔 @outlander 💜 💜

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I havent looked into it but i think i will. I know to do returns etc i have to pay shipping to get it back and also for a replacement as well. @Sans911

My other mattress was comfy but i upgraded in bedsize so had to get another mattress too. I needed something abit softer to my other one though. While it was comfy it was also really firm in nature. I have a bad back so need something good, this one had like 100 good reviews so maybe i just got a bad batch or something. Ill send them an email tomorrow and read up on the terms and conditions and see what can be done.

Yeah its harder now that its gone pear shaped. It makes meal times harder or even want anything now. Always such an effort or everything is either to hard for me or its just not appealing but i cant really do much about it now.

Have you got much on tomorrow?
