The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

You're up very late hun @Zoe7 or do not have daylight saving in Tassie?

My day was busy this morning, but this afternoon and evening have been at a slower pace. My volunteer games night tonight bored me terribly and I was glad to be home. It just wasn't great group dynamics, and I played a game with someone who I know (also has mh problems) who's company I didn't particularly enjoy. She asked lots of very personal questions about my MI which I don't mind discussing that much but not really in public spaces. I answered her questions as the restaurant was noisy so no one else at the table could hear. I didn't want to be rude.

I was at the hospital clinic late morning. Not a long wait today thank goodness. But I have another, different infection in the same wound. They wanted to put me on an ab that I was possibly allergic to over 30years ago as it is the most suitable for the bacteria that's present. I agreed to trail it at least. I just took my first dose tonight so I'll know by my 2nd or 3rd dose if I start to have a reaction. I hope not.

My boys are asleep in their usual places. They look so peaceful and calm.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I slept on and off for most of the day @Sans911 - didn't go to work ...just couldn't face it today. Yes we have daylight savings here so it is nearly 1am. I cant see I will be sleeping anytime soon though.

I would find it really difficult to have those conversations while you are supposed to be out socialising. Some people don;t get those boundaries in certain situations hey. You seem like you did well to get through it and answer her questions - not ideal for you though.

Sorry to hear you have another infection Hon - I really hope youo don't have a reaction to the ABs and it clears up quickly for you. It has been a really long process to recovery from the op with all the complications you have had - totally sucks

Awww our fur babies are so precious - I can imagine MR A and Jasper all snuggled up My babies are asleep also. Toby is back to his usual happy, snuggly self but with shiny new teeth His gums are still quite red but that should progressively heal over the next few days. He is certainly not in any discomfort and is eating well. Cat is in her room all curled up on her big bed. I am feeding her whenever she asks these last 2 days - as long as she is happy for whatever time I have left with her that is all that matters.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm totally with you on how you are treating Cat @Zoe7. I'd be exactly the same. She is so beautiful and precious. And Toby with shiny teeth! Now you have to get his fur to match the same level of shinyness!

Yes, getting frustrated with this recovery. But thankfully it's not a major infection and it's not a big wound so it's just a matter of time now. Other people with the same surgery have had major issues, wounds that have separated or died and need more surgery and significant, complex management. Then they have to put up with disfigurement and awful scars. My scars on the left hand side won't be very pretty at all. I'm not happy with how I look after surgery but then I never liked the body I was in. Now it's just more lumpy and disfigured.

I certainly hope I don't see the lady I was talking to tonight for a while. But I do wish her well in her recovery and journey.

It is like you can see through the screen @Sans911 lol Toby does need a bath and a haircut. I thought about doing it today but could not get up enough energy ...maybe tomorrow. He is still having drops in his ear though so might wait until thatnis finished because his ear is very dirty. He rolls around on that side after he gets his drops in so he presently has one (off)white ear and one grey one

My little girl can have anything she wants and plenty of cuddles. I have been spending much more time in her room with her nd although she would rather sleep just being there is nice. It is actually the only room in the house that is finished. I moved everything out and painted it a while ago and put in new curtains. She definitely has the best room in the house and the only one that doesn't have school stuff stored in there - perfect for my little princess

I think we all have things we are not happy with when it comes to our bodies Hon but it is what is inside that matters and not how we look - and to me you are perfect in that regard

I hear you about that lady. It is hard to be blindsided with those questions on a social outing. She obviously needed to talk and ask questions so I hope she has an outlet elsewhere to discuss her own journey. To your credit though she must have felt you were the right person to talk with so see that as a positive in a difficult situation.

Tobes has justnjumped up behind me and is curled up on the couch cushion lol - little snugglepus is so cute

Do you have much on tomorrow? Op shop day?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

When it comes to dogs they'll take a cuddle & pat anytime but cats are definitely their own master and everything is done on their schedule. My boys generally don't like to be cuddled or touched until they're ready. And when they're ready? Never mind you might be in the middle of something!

I was actually supposed to be away this weekend on a volunteer retreat. The company holds it every year, it's dirt cheap and is usually held somewhere in the bush. I went last year and I enjoyed some parts of it. But this year there's a lot of new people going that I don't know, and the scheduled activities are not really to my liking. Yet again I'm way behind in my assignment preparation and writing so in the end this took priority. I'd already booked off from the op shop for tommorow so I can try to get stuck into the assignment. I find the course I'm doing interesting but my motivation to learn and participate is almost in my boots. Honestly, I think if I could sleep as much as I would like to I would be more satisfied than a hibernating 🐻. So that is my weekend plan. And my mother is borrowing my car so I can't go too far.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I know you are struggling to get your work done @Sans911 but you are still doing it. It will be such a massive achievement when you get to the end of it because throughout you have had to encounter so many barriers ...yet you have still done it. I really do find that inspiring Hon

You are right about the difference between cats and dogs - dogs need constant attention but cats just do their own thing. Cat certainly rules our house with her routines and putting Toby in his place when he gets in the way. Since I got Toby Cat has been more aloof but it is a bit hard to get a look in when he is with me eerywhere I go ....he is one spoilt little puppy dog that is for sure. I always said he would never be on the bed with me because that was Cat's area but it didn't take me long to give in to his little face looking at me from on the floor. There was a little while that I had both of them on the bed with me but the bigger Toby got the more Cat would disappear into her room. She is happy in there though - it is sunny, warm and cosy for her.

I would be lost without my car - even when I don't plan on going anywhere I would feel strange not having it available. Will your Mum have it all weekend or just tomorrow?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes my mum will have the car until Monday. She has gone up to the hills district to care for my Auntie's pets while they are away over East. The public transport to this area is at a bare minimum service over the weekend. She was going to hire a car, and I thought it was ridiculous to spend that kind of money. So I offered it to her to make life easier for her. She's also taking her sister with her for the weekend (another Auntie). She's a good driver so I'm not concerned about the safety of the car. Yes, I'm rather attached to my car too.

I have a small deli right near my house if I need anything & a major shopping centre is a short bus ride (a stop is only a minute's walk). So it's all good.

@Zoe7

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

That is good @Sans911 Even if you just need to get out of the house for a while you have options that are close enough. I went out earlier and did a little shopping to get me through the weekend - wasn't out long because the shops are only five minutes away. I shouldn't need to go out again this weekend either. It is going to be a cold, wet day tomorrow according to the weather forecast so probably best I don't need to go anywhere. Plenty of snuggle time with my fur babies is on the agenda ...and of course a little sport thrown in there too

I am going to head off @Sans911 It is 3.15am here and I really need to try to get a few hours sleep. It has been really lovelly catching up with you tonight Hon. I'll check on you over the weekend to see how your assignment is going and more importantly how you are. Take it easy on yourself and get done what you can - I have faith in you Sans

Goodnight Hon - hope you can get some sleep soon too. Hugs to you and your fur babies and much love from us all here to you too

SNAP @Zoe7

It's a hot weekend forecast here @Zoe7 with temps over 30. I'm not a fan of the heat and if I keep my unit closed up its much cooler inside.

Well I'm not sure about you but I'm starting to fade. It's so nice though talking to you like this. I feel like I'm sitting beside or opposite having a cuppa and chat. Take care of yourself sweetie 💕💕♥️♥️
