The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Pain is a bit more manageable this afternoon @Zoe7. I think my abdominal binder isn't helping by placing pressure in my chest, but I have to wear it so it's a double edged sword. I'm a bit stuck on the assignment so I'm going back to another area that I left earlier to fix that.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

That sounds really uncomfortable @Sans911 How much longer do you need to wear it for?

I was just saying something similar - I need a break because I can't focus and then will go back to work a little later and hopefully be able to concentrate after a break. This assignment of yours is sounding like a real process. I hope once you fix one part you will get some inspiration for the rest of it. Keep plugging away Hon - you will get it done

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The binder has to be worn day & night (also when I'm sleeping) for about 6 weeks. It's to protect the abdominal wound especially when reaching or bending over. I'm also at a higher risk of getting a hernia because they removed a small amount of muscle. This weakens the abdominal wall. Same as I have to wear a supportive bra 24/7 for the same time.

Yes, the assignment is a real process. Lots of subjects to discuss which need to fit into the overreaching topic. I'm nearly there, then I have to edit, do a table of contents (struggling with that) and insert my reference list. Have until tommorow night.

That really does sound uncomfortable but necessary @Sans911 It is a long healing process for you but I hope some of that pain eases quickly. Only do what you need and don't push yourself Hon - you recovery/health is important.

It is good that you have one more day to get this assignment done but will be even better if you can get most of it done today. It sounds like a really big process with lots of sections so all the best with pulling it all together.

Hey @Snowie @Zoe7 @outlander @Shaz51 @Faith-and-Hope

I just got back from the city after spending 3hours at the Plastics Clinic!! Most of that time was waiting on clinicians. One of my wounds isn't healing properly so the doctors are very concerned. I need to return to the clinic on Friday but the likelihood that I might need to return to theatre the following Monday. I'm pretty disappointed to say the least as the community nurses are partly responsible for the lack of attention to this problem (by not coming daily, covering over the wound site and failing to report any problems to the hospital). Thankfully the other wounds are ok.

Mum and I went for lunch afterwards and then returned home on the train.

I've lost several hours of assignment time so I need to geg to that now and submit it now. All I feel like doing now is to have a sleep.

@outlander I'm really pleased to hear that you were successful with the loan. That must a big relief of one issue at least.

Glad to hear that you had a good day at school @Zoe7

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Oh @Sans911 that is not the news you wanted to hear Hon. I can really hear your frustrations and anger at the care you have been given post-op and how that has contributed to the wound not healing as expected It is good the other wounds are okay but it would be so much better if they all were okay. I do hope you do not need further surgery Hon - cross that bridge when you get to it I suppose is all you can do.

It also sucks that you have lost so much time for your assignment. Hopefully what you have done is enough - you only need to pass Honand with all the work you have put in I have everything crossed that that is the case for you. It is frustrating when we know that we know the subject matter but have trouble concentrating to pull it all together - been feeling much that way with my school work the last couple of weeks - tiredness and pain certainly are a major factor for you too so my heart goes out to you. Let us know when you have submitted it and we can celebrate that achievement with you - because under the immense stress and pain you have been under it is certainly a big achievement to get it done
