The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Yes @Zoe7

You need to hurry and get all of this attended to then wait

How many people volunteer - how wonderful that people do - and we have many gifts to share

I wish you all the best and hope you get some success this year - that would be good

The volunteering is off the table @Owlunar - the Principal made that very clear. So now I need to see what HR says about me formally returning to work for 2 half days for 2 weeks and then extending that to 2 full days. The issue is that I don't know if I can cope with it but I should know after I have done 2 half days in one week.

You can only try @Zoe7 and you have done everything right for each step of the way. I wish it hadn't be so difficult for you. I've experienced similar treatment with my employer. Sometimes I wish I had of broken a limb or two. Broken minds seem so much harder for people to understand and accept

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

They do all these introductory courses to be able to deal with mental illness @Sans911 but the upshot of all that is they really have no idea and the stigma still very much exists. They think that because we have a MI there is something 'wrong' with us and we are a threat in some way - they don't get that MI just like any disease can be treated. It is a real flaw in our society that this stigma is still attached to people with MIs.

I can only imagine how much worse it would be for those who have had their issues starting from work and to everyday be reminded that it was at work that something happened to cause their issues. I am starting to feel a lot like work is adding to my issues and even though I have loved my job in the past - it is making it very hard to want to go back - I need support to do that and if that is not forthcoming then I honestly do not know what the future holds for me - and that scares me!

Hearing every single word @Zoe7. It's not right, not right at all. I just hope if it's another place you go to, someone there will look out for you.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I am honestly starting to think that going somewhere else would be best. I don't want to work somewhere where I know there is not any support and the Principal has made it pretty clear that she is not supportive. The previous Principal was supportive - I was never left in any doubt that there was a position there for me when I was ready to return. ...but there is nothing more I can do than I have already done - you are right there @Sans911 - it is now a case to see what HR does and then go to the union if I need to - that is a last resort but one I am only too happy to take if need be!

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I get it @Zoe7 - you have to try it to see if you can deal with it - whatever happened in your past - it has left you with traumatic stress and volunteering would be one way to get back and see if you could do it

What a pity that the principal won't tolerate volunteers - it seems like a form of discriminization to me

How many people are volunteers? I actually have two certificates from the Year of the Volunteer - one from the school where I was teaching CRE and also from the Bereaved Parents Association - The Compassionate Friends -

I think everyone here in these forums is a volunteer - supporting other people in the way that only peers can - and some of it isn't easy but worthwhile

Keep on keeping on Zoe

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I don't know whether it is all volunteers or just me @Owlunar and my situation. It definitely feels like she is discriminating against me because of my illness - as if having to deal with triggers, flashbacks and nightmares isnt enough - now I have to deal with someone who is not only unsupportive but also disrespectful. That is why I really can't see me ever going back to that school and that would break my heart all over again - I loved that school and the kids and there is a lot of history there - maybe moving on would be best for me though!

I've got a very busy day. Seeing both GP and pdoc, and some other appts but all spaced out and not too far so I don't have to rush around.
