The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

@Sans911 ..... I hope it helps you to hear that we have ended up at hospital in the middle of the night with symptoms that required medical tests ...... and they have come back clear. Our feelings at the time were the same - are we taking precious time and resources from others ?

That self-doubt and sense of being a bother is quite normal it seems ..... and if we all followed through on them, then when there was something terribly wrong, and the test results would have shown it to be that way ..... then we wouldn’t be in hospital where we ought to be ......

We can’t predict the outcomes, or just how necessary the tests and treatments are ..... none of us can ..... so we are all as entitled to that attention and care as anyone else. There is integrity in taking that responsibly for our health, and it encourages others to do the same .....

I say you did well @Sans911 ...... and there will always be people who don’t understand mi and it’s characteristics, nor it’s needed treatments. It’s hurts when those dearest to us are on that page.

Hugs Hon ..... ❤️

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

You often know just the right thing to say @Faith-and-Hope. Thank you.

I did seek confirmation from two professional sources by phone before going to hospital, with the first professional asking me to promise that I will go to hospital if the second confirmed her. When I told her what I had done, I heard her audibly gasp in shock. Which of course shocked me, despite myself knowingly aware of the implications of my actions.

I know we could discuss this back and forth, but I acted with a conscious will of harm, whereas others present to hospital with unintentional harm, illness or injury. That's kind of what I meant. If I didn't inflict that on myself, there would be no need for me to be there. But the outcome of my actions had very serious outcomes which have been predicted due to research.

But aside from that, for once I was grateful that from the nursing and medical staff, I was not treated badly, or openly judged or in invalidated.

@Teej - you aren't obligated to respond to me. I likewise wanted to acknowledge that I saw the like and said hi as you passed by.

I understand that life is quite challenging for you right now. I'm with you too 🤗💜

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes, you do/did have a zoo @outlander. I figured that you were on property so there might be other animals besides the horses. But you never talk about them when Snowie and I or Zoe talk about our own. Who is responsible for their care? And how are you feeling about being around horses now?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I dont own all those now just the 3 at home ( i dont live on a property) and the horses on an aggisted place. i need to be careful for identity reasons so i dont talk about them much. they arent really mine anyway i just look after them. The horses are a sore spot atm so will need to leave that topic for now @Sans911

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

No problem @outlander. I understand. I remember you showed the photos of rolling green hills nearby to where you live, so along with the horses I made a natural assumption. My bad. Sorry.

I imagine often what might happen if two members meet accidentally. How would they know who rachet other is anyway? But I guess it could happen at a conference or some other mh event. There probably have been occasions where members may be present in the same place, but be totally unaware.

I really miss PR. It's been so long now that she's absent. I do hope she is OK. So many others come and go too. Occasionally I think about them as well.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

It was a different sort of self-inflicted health injury that kept taking us back to hospital at the time @Sans911, neither of them intended to reduce the seriousness or severity of the other ..... and I am so, so glad to hear that you were treated carefully and well.

Some forms of harm are still viewed more compassionately than others, but I hope that is starting to change.

The same sort of underlying harm is why I am here on the forums .... it has changed its form and hidden itself this way ..... we are dealing with a shape-shifter. I wish I could reach through the screen and hug you .....
