The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I've had a very busy day @outlander. But it's been good too.

Still feeling a lot of pain and stiffness. Saw my gp today who thinks I have tennis elbow from moving a lot of furniture in the last week. Mmm..

Also saw my dietician today, and we are now moving from weekly appt to fortnightly.

I also have a new support worker I met this afternoon. She starts with me on Friday for three hours, and she'll be helping me to do a bulk cooking session so that I have 5 dinners a week to eat. Cooking dinner is so hard for me.By the end of the day I have virtually no energy to prepare a healthy meal, and then clean up.

Both my support workers were present as well, which was nice.

And my neighbour cooked me a nice dinner of spaghetti bolognese.

How has your day been?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Bugger about th tennis elbow @Sans911 how long does that take to heal up? A bit of physio might help?

Your dietician moving to fortnightly appointments sounds like good progress for you .

Your new support worker sounds good. Making up bulk meals is a good idea, will make it easy at the end of the day when your to tired to cook.

Had abit of a busy day. Had to sort out some things that id be putting off but its done now thankfully. Just watching a tv show and crocheting now before bed. Have an early start tomorow and another busy day too.
Do you have a busy day tomorrow too?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes busy tommorow @outlander. I have my psychologist in the morning, then my support worker and cleaner. Nothing after that.

I'm glad you got some things achieved you've been putting off.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I hope your psych appt goes well @Sans911 i think you said you liked this new one and she helped in the last appt?

Yeah its good to have them sorted, its just those annoying things that just keep being put off.
Im considering going for a ride tomorrow, someone said i could borrow their horse if i wanted to ride so i think i might if i get a few hours.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes I do seem to be warming to this pyschologist @outlander. She's not too clinical, more human.

A ride sounds like good thing for you. It's not something you've wanted to do in a long time

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Hi there @Sans911 @outlander @Snowie @Faith-and-Hope @Anastasia and everyone here.

I'm glad you're on a roll with the dietitian, psychology stuff and support workers @Sans911 . That's great. Cooking dinner is hard for me at times as my housemate likes different to things to me (ie- not fish, soup, etc) so dinner is hard. Getting your support worker to help with meals sounds like a great idea. I'm finding that it's hard to fit my NDIS package around my life with uni and stuff and with Covid-19 affecting things, it's hard. I tend to want to put uni ahead of ndis but apparently that's not good in ndis' eyes. I want to get my psychology degree to become a case manager which is why I want to put time into studying yet it's like ndis don't want me to get a job and rely on them. Weird huh?

@outlander your crochet blanket sounds gorgeous! I really hope you get it done for winter as it will be so nice and warm. Look forward to seeing photos if you want to share! As for the horse riding, lucky you! I'm so envious! I love horses- always have- but unfortunately I'm too heavy to ride at the moment. I'd love to lose enough weight just to do a beach trail ride in the ocean here in Victoria and that is something I seriously have to look at doing. Enjoy your horse riding session!

@Faith-and-Hope I'm so proud of you for the painting achievement! Well done! You are so talented!
@Snowie Thanks for the advice on motivation! Much appreciated. You are right. I'm just going to have to take little steps and not panic. I think I tend to rush into things and then freak out and come to a standstill and then nothing happens and then become so stressed that it's a bad cycle mentally.

As for my mental health wellbeing, this morning I decided to start a stress journal of sorts where I write down everything that is worrying me so it is out of my head and I can see everything on paper. I'm hoping if I see it written down, the anxiety will ease and I won't feel so scared or upset about what is stressing me and I might be able to do something about the issues. Sort of like the Re: Worry Room - Get it out, and walk away discussion post here in the forums but more personal as such. Things like finances, uni stuff, my car, self care, exercise and weight, those sorts of things. Just a place where I can get it all out and leave it sit there until I'm in the right headspace to deal with it. I do know that I'm struggling with time management especially in regards to uni and self care and daily tasks and I really need to set a budget asi know that is a weak

point of mine that needs action. I'll see how this goes and hope it helps me with my mental health issues.

On a good point, I finally picked up my new Skechers from the post office that I ordered online on sale over a week ago and I'd really like to use them to get walking around my area. My sister paid for them as she knows I needed new shoes and she wants to help me lose some weight so fingers crossed, Melbourne gives me some great weather to use them in. Otherwise, I may just do some stepping exercises using a chair at home and get in some exercise during tv time.

Talk later forumite friends!

Hi @Sans911 that’s great having your support worker assist with cooking meals. I’m always tired at the end of the day too so I stock up on veggies for a quick stir fry.

I hope today has turned out ok for you 💜💖

@Judi9877 that’s a great idea about a stress journal and writing it all down like the worry room. I might copy that and my psych would be pleased about that too.

i’m determined to knit tonight and keep my hands busy, finishing a blanket for my grandson.

I well remember all the uni stress and procrastination...good luck! 💙🧡
