The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Thanks for your response @Peregrinefalcon

He is not at immediate threat right now but if his animal has to euthanased he might be. The moral, ethical issue I have is do I want to stop him? And my heart says possibly not. Legally however, I don't want to be in front of a coroner's court being questioned that I had knowledge & did nothing. His is of sound mind, rational and competent to make his own determinations, so do I have any obligations to prevent him?

I know too that he will refuse any help offered. And I've talked to him in the last few days to offer alternatives, support and guidance. I have also said that it wouldn't be a nice thing to do if I found him. I've told him too that I would really miss his friendship.

Thank you for your response.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

@Sans911 That really is a very difficult position for you to be in Hon Like you, I can uderstand fully those thoughts your neighbour is having and also how very important his dog is to him. I cannot imagine life without Toby and honestly do not know what I would do if I was to lose him ...so I very much get it. That does not make any of this any easier for you though. It certainly is a moral dilemma but ultimately you can only do what you have. From experience we both know that anyone will find a way if that is what they want. I can only suggest you keep doing what you are - be there to support your friend but also protect yourself too. What he does or does not do is not your responsibiity no matter which way you look at it. I do also hear your very real fear that if he does do anything that you may well be the one to find him so I would suggest if you are having difficulty reaching him in the future that you call 000 instead - the responsibility is then off your shoulders and if he is okay then you deal with the aftermath later - you may lose that friendship but it is better than the alternatve trauma it would place on you. Hoping for everyone's sake that there is alternative treatments for the dog for now but it also sounds like he is very unwell and the inevitable will come soon - I am sure neither of you want him suffering either. My heart goes out to you all sweetheart

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Hello @Anastasia you're such a wonderful person around the forums. Thanks so much for your support and being here for me. Crisis is averted for now but like @Zoe7 has pointed out in her post, I feel in my heart it might only be a matter of time. For them both.

The vet is speculating that if it's not muscular-skeletal previously suspected then it's possibly neurogical, like a slipped disk or something happening in her spine. We haven't gone done the route of scans, xrays or blood tests simply due to unnecessary distress and cost.

So it's more medication for the dog. None of which my friend can afford. I bailed him out mid week with another vet bill. So today another friend paid for this account over the phone. She works, I don't.

And unfortunately it might get to the point where the cost of the dog's care gets to be an issue, particularly if she's not improving.

I was in this situation last year with my cat Jasper. He was extremely unwell with severe gut issues, and wasn't improving. I tried everything, including natural treatments. Even paid $4500 for an operation the year b4 that didn't achieve anything. I But the final vet visit, I said I couldn't put the cat or myself through such suffering. Jasper was only 2 and a half, and I'm still racked with guilt that perhaps I did not do enough.

After the vet I took my friend and his dog to a park by the river. She (the dog) enjoyed walking in the water. I bought my friend and I some sausage rolls and an ice cream. Plus an ice-cream for the dog, but she wasn't that interested. Who doesn't like ice-cream?!

I'm just going to see this other friend of his (that paid the bill). She lives at the other of the block. I've met her before, but I want to discuss with her this recent situation.

Thank you again for being here for me. You're a wonderful and kind person.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Thank you @Zoe7 for your support, your wisdom, your way with words, your kindness and understanding. My friend has a key lock outside, so the likelihood is that I would call emergency services but I would possibly just go in and see. Death doesn't scare me, but loosing a friend does if that makes sense. I would just want to make sure he was found in a dignified & respectful way.

My friend doesn't know what have a great quality of llife apart from his dog.He has some small pleasures like listening to the radio and watching TV. He catches up with a couple of friends too every week or so. But he never goes anywhere except the supermarket or corner store.

I hope you've managed some rest this afternoon or weekend
