My Thai Discovery Journey

My Thai Discovery Journey

Hi All,

Two weeks ago I decided that I needed to step outside my comfort zone and change my scenery by heading over to North Thailand for a month. It’s not a completely new experience as I have been in this area before but this time I will be there for longer, will venture further afield and will travel alone.

I am excited by this journey and intend it to be one of self discovery as much as absorbing the culture of this beautiful and friendly part of the world. My daily Yoga sessions and a Meditation Workshop have prepared me to be at peace with myself and being in this new environment will further facilitate a sense of calm as well as enlightenment.

I invite you to share my journey. I intend this thread to also serve as a travel diary and will post some pics.

I have woken early and am thinking about the last minute things that need to be done. Tonight I will be sleeping on a plane (hopefully as it’s not the easiest way for me to get rest) and come morning, I will be in a different country.

This trip is meant to be one of simplicity. I am taking just a carryon bag and won’t be partaking in the usual touristy types of things. I won’t to live the life there and am open to whatever unfolds. I have booked the first couple of nights accommodation and then will play it by ear.

So come along and let the adventure begin.

Re: My Thai Discovery Journey

Day 1 and I made it to Thailand. I managed to get some sleep on the first leg of the journey to Kuala Lumpur. Then it was another two hour flight to Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, after I arrived at my hotel and started to unpack, I realised that my liquids that I had put in a separate plastic bag had been swiped.

I had been singled out for a full body scan at the KL airport (must have looked like a drug mule) and lost sight of my belongings. They had been searched and put on another conveyor belt and when I eventually grabbed them, I didn’t notice that they were missing. Wasn’t a problem at the Aussie airport when I left. So my heavy duty insect repellant and deodorant, sensitive skin moisturiser and toothpaste were all gone. Hope somebody appreciates them. Never mind, I picked up some bits at the local 7 Eleven. Not the same but will have to do.

Second issue was that my debit card PIN wasn’t being recognised at the ATM when it was perfectly fine last week. Fortunately, I was able to change it via the app and got some money.

Arrrived at the hotel a bit early and had to wait for my room to be ready so I enjoyed some herbal tea in the downstairs cafe area.

After settling into my room and having a shower, I headed to the nearby park to get a foot massage but the ladies who used to be there were gone. A security guy told me that they had moved and he would take me there. Hmmmm? I asked for directions and before I knew it he disappears and comes back with his motorbike.

So I hopped on the back and together we rode to an out of the way place where I had the most relaxing hour long treatment for $6. Wish you all could have been there.

Feeling peckish I walked down the street and found an organic cafe and lunched on a huge salad - $2.70. Grabbe those toiletries and a phone/iPad charger on the way back to the hotel. I’ll venture out a bit later and grab some Thai stir fry and a fruit smoothie for dinner.

Feels good to be here. Going to check out some yoga places tomorrow.

Not where I am staying, just a dwelling I came across where the residents do laundry for others.

Wow @soul! Sounds like the beginning of an awesome adventure! I'm glad we're all going with you on your trip. In Friday Feast tonight, we went to Thailand and were talking about some of the street food there. Google was not our friend at all as some of the food looks far too "interesting" for me! Glad you've landed and sorry to hear about your toiletries being taken in KL. Take special care.

Great first day @soul - except for the lost / stolen toiletries. $6 for an hour long massage. I'm envious.
Keep enjoying. Keep exploring.

Hi @soul

Sounded like a rocky start at the airport but that hour long massage would of made up for it! Wish I could of been there too indeed - especially sharing that Thai food, my favourite. Yum. It's only day one and the travel bug is already starting to tempt me. Can't wait to hear all about day 2 😄

Last night I headed over to the South Gate for dinner. I am staying in the Old City which is surrounded by bits of a giant crumbling wall. Chiang Mai actually means “new city”and it’s the largest town in Northrn Thailand. The part where I am feels more traditional - no huge high rises or shiny shopping malls.

Anyway over to the night food market I went and enjoyed a delicious meal of chicken chilli basil and rice. Then washed that down with a refreshing dragon fruit, mango and passion fruit smoothie. Mrs Pa is an institution there and she makes the best drinks. You pick your fruit and she blends it up. Meal was 40 baht, drink 20 baht. All up - $2.30.

Also bought some red papaya and dragon fruit for breakky and to snack on. My room has a small fridge to keep it fresh. Love them tropical fruits!!
