Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @PeppiPatty,

From what I've heard it sounds like sleep is often an issue for you. I like your sense of humour about it. I feel pretty silly for the way I often am and it does help to laugh sometimes.

Not so easy to laugh at your mum and the way it is between you. I think it was around your age that I had to rush away from my birthday dinner and cry behind a shed in response to something my mum said/did. I'm so grateful the relationship between her and I has improved so much over the years since. I really hope your mum and you can have a better time of it as time goes by too.

Big week (by my standards) coming this week, including getting to meet a first cousin I have never met before in my life. Nervous and excited!

Namaste this morning, @Former-Member I can see the photos now, they are great. Cacao is so happily languid. They are all gorgeous. Hope you have a good day.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita & @PeppiPatty & @Appleblossom......

The new avatar is Katniss when we first got her! I took that photo Katniss is my favorite by far. My partner doesn't have favorites. I can't help it - besides they are furchildren NOT people children! You may be wondering - why THREE kittens?! My partner's mum brought them all to breed from them. Hopefully she will give us some money when we sell their kittens, as at the moment we are buying most of their food & litter! (Didn't need 3!!) Cacao is the boy & I love the word "languid" @Mazarita - I looked up the definition & it is a perfect description!!

The verdict on pilates vs hot yoga is - I prefer hot yoga. Even when yoga is challenging there is an intention for relaxation, calmness & mindfulness. Pilates certainly activated the glutes & abs, so I can see how it may help lower back pain. However, yoga is more beneficial for my mental health.

With next week's reduced timetable due to Xmas - I plan to go to pilates & hot yoga.

Here is all three of the rascals being languid!! (Sleeping on my legs!)

@Mazarita it is great that you are much more active than you have been in years. Please be careful with the creativity - glad you are talking to your psychiatrist about it..... Be kind. Rest if you need.

@PeppiPatty very sorry to hear you are not sleeping well.... I hope you get some decent sleep soon.

@Mazarita I started reading ANOTHER novel yesterday - I think I will go read some more soon.... My dream is to have a house with a wall full of books (by the beach!) - probably not a realistic dream, but hey?!

@Mazarita

To tell the truth, I dont know where I'de be without getting little messages from you and others.......

That video stuff......cool.....

Nah @Mazarita I'm the victim of the century........It's the MOST important that we and others like @Appleblossom @peace @Former-Member @Chris ........others told about how we can reach out and get support, me thinks.

Could be wrong but look how we can mangage out lives.......

Which Reminds me, I've been tuching in to @Former-Member....peer to peer....and this morning, I remembered someone else who has NO support with her children when she gave birth to them. I spent a bit of time with her.....but she would NOT accept support......

I was also coping with my oldest son.....he was living in PErth with me and other difficulties but she refused support.

I heard about her yesterday....jeepers.....I'm so proud of @Former-Member.

This woman is managing her life how she can but how you, @Former-Member are doing it is so much better.....

Re: Night Shift

Sorry you had the feeling of being put upon by your mother about your son.

I am a bit depressed and worried about my son's staying in bed ... a LOT.

It was weird ... last night I did more music than I have for ages .. played piano ... sung and played recorder. I was up to 3 am ... just mucking around ...nothing disciplined for concert of performance. Then my son asked me if I heard him from 4-9 in the morning ... lucky our neighbours are far enough away and are tolerant.

I will go and play soon.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Appleblossom....

Sorry to hear you are depressed & worried about your son.... Does he have an appointment with a health professional coming up? Can you talk to him about what is making him withdraw from life? Is there something simple you two usually do together that you can suggest doing to get him out of bed for a hour or so?

Being musical sounds fun. I hope you got some sleep today.

Namaste,

A

Re: Night Shift

Yes we do little things ... food ...cats ... movie ... singing etc ... went shoe shopping last week ... which is a big ask for a young man to do with his mum ... mostly there is a reasonable vibe in the house ... but I do have to face it that he still is very depressed ... its not crisis mode ... but depression is catchy ...

Yesterday he told me off for being in bed at 1pm and then laughed ... as he realises that he prefers to tell me off then let me tell him off ... but it is still sad ... I have been dealing with this pretty much alone for 10 years ... 24/7. I took an extra relaxant last night and was still up playing the piano til 3 ...

Anyway he has gone off to a friend now .. but she is also seriously depressed ... though she has told me in a weary voice that she will live ...

I need to let it out a bit on the forum ... the girl also had a self harm instance yesterday .. I can only do so much ... I managed my SH and it really has been over a decade since I did it ... and he seems not to be able to escape it ... and is very loving and caring to her ... but I understand the level of pressure she is under too ...

thank god for cats.. but my cat was overgrooming .. so I have been doing lots of brushing in the last few weeks .. good to limit the summer shedding.

Re: Night Shift

@Appleblossom So sorry you are feeling down, along with your son and friend. I hope you are getting enough sleep even if not in regular hours. Sounds like your creativity is in strong form.

@PeppiPatty, I like getting your messages too. It's been about six months since we first 'met' here. It's great to get to know you better over time (and to creatively collaborate via the forum).

@Former-Member, The kittens are adorably languid, all three of them. Katniss has a beautiful face. I am hearing you (and the psychiatrist) about my suddenly intense creative activity coinciding with loss of sleep and routine. But last night I got to bed around 12.30am and was up at 7am this morning, so a decent chunk of sleep there within okay hours. Need to be up and out for GP appointment in the morning so will hopefully get myself into bed before midnight tonight. Thanks for expressing your concern, I appreciate it. Cool, your voracious appetite for books. I hope you do get your dream house!

Namaste.

Re: Night Shift

How old is your son @Appleblossom?

I think you mentioned psychosis or schizophrenia also.

I just know that my partner has to work hard not to let my depression, anxiety, suicidality & psychosis make HIM depressed... He was diagnosed with GAD & dysthmia in the past, but now he manages his mental health really well. It must be extremely hard if you are struggling also....

I don't really know what to say, but glad you feel you can vent here. It sounds like you are doing your best.

I don't know much about typical SH - I have SH'ed in the way of OD's & eating disorder behaviour.... I know the eating disorder behaviours are encouraged when you have friends with eating disorders too.... I hope they are both kind to themselves.

Sorry not much help....

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed - I'm doing better & I feel like my partner is expecting more from me.... I don't have more sometimes when he asks for it.... I push through & feel like I might break....

Re: Night Shift

Thank you @Mazarita - That is an okay amount of sleep. Glad to hear! Wow, I just looked at the time & it is nearly 10! I'm going to go to bed & read a bit before I hopefully falling asleep soon. I have the exercise physiologist session, then a gp appointment tomorrow morning.
