Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

@NikNik
Is it possible for the moderators to come on each shift and let us know who's on. It's hard not knowing who's on.

Hi All,

Hope you're all ok and doing something nice and kind for yourself.

I've had a melt down at the GP today, somehow things are falling apart...

Re: Night Shift

I feel so angry about the plight of our indigneous people - and a lot of this is the people have seen the way many of them are forced to live and our first Australians are judged unfairly

It was so tough - having strong feelings about Aboriginal Deaths is Custody - and seeing what is was like where my son died - truly archaic and dark - something that would scar the best of people

The ideas - the words I needed - did not come - I could not close my ears to the judgmental comments - but I wanted to say - "Hey - we took their land, their culture, and THEIR CHILDREN - we destroyed their basic framework of lives"

I know many things were changed back in 1986 coming forward - and sometimes I think I should go and see if the newer Juvenile Justice Centre in Melbourne is not too run down - I did go twice and the second time it was depressing -

But - is it an excuse or not - I spent 10 years of my life working in all the areas regarding Aboringal Deaths in Custody and Juvenile Deaths in Custody and Youth Suiced - and at some point we all have to finish an assignment or washing the kitchen floor or whatever - and so I did 10 years

It feels like Forest, Forest Gump - running because he felt like it - and he gave people hope - but that's not why he ran - and he stopped when it was done

It is very hard to do anything alone - but I did what I did -

Seriously - when I had information on the new facilities for children in detention - sometimes for no other reason than they were State Wards with no family - I was told that this was like a holiday camp - I could have wept - but that day I did say

"Anybody who is detained has no choice in so many areas of their lives - when to get up, when to go to bed, what they have to eat, when they can go outside and when they can come in, what chores they have to do"

And these people had never seen what I saw - never knew what I did - back then Turana was called The Youth Training Centre - and I asked - what were they being trained to do - for there was not training - and nature abhors a vacuum so everyone learns - and people default on this

I have been ranting - venting even - but I have no idea how to go back there and start again - I have a powerful motive for those ten years -

I go through many phases at this time of year
