Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth. I had another few hours sleep but feeling tired even though I should be okay. I'm supposed to have a lunch date in about an hour but I'm going to try to cancel it. We saw each other last night anyway. Haven't had breakfast or shower yet and won't be up to heading out of the flat for a while I think. Sorry you only got in a micronap.

Re: Night Shift

Glad to hear you managed some more sleep. 2-3 hours is just not enough is it? I'm feeling really washed out too and not going any where today myself. Doing as little as possible now that it's hot already. The chores can wait til later in the day when it should cool down a little.

Hopefully you are able to contact your friend and re-schedule for another day.

Re: Night Shift

I can imagine how washed out you might feel today. Sounds like a good plan to save the domestics until it cools down a bit. It will be okay with our friend. My partner will probably still go. The three of us are good friends individually and together. We see each other a couple of times a week usually aside from extra lunch dates.

Re: Night Shift

Sounds like a nice friendship. I just heard from my friend and she is coming tomorrow for the night so I'll be sorting that room out later. I do actually enjoy her company, she's done a lot of different new age and indigenous healing training as well as chi gung, and (ironically) is also a psych nurse who calls herself 'crazy'. Loves a laugh and tells a great story. And if she stays here she always takes me out for dinner or something. We're going to do Indian tomorrow night.

Re: Night Shift

Your friend sounds like a rich and colorful person. Good that you haven't let her domestic comment overshadow the good things between you. Indian sounds yum. That's a semi-regular on our take away list when we have dinner at our friend's place.

Re: Night Shift

Yes, it is a good friendship here. Out of all the women I've known, she is the one I've probably spent the most time with aside from my mum.

I'm going off-line now for a while. Catch up with you later. Have a cruisy day.

Re: Night Shift

I really enjoyed reading your discussion about bi-polar @eth and @Mazarita.

I am pretty sure I have issues with elevated mood too .... a lot of the time I throw myself into music to help disperse it and give it a positive spin ... am I displacing my anger frustration or just energy .. often the intensity is pretty high and difficult to turn off.

Lately I have been sleeping a lot ...up to 18 hours per day ... or just lieing in bed doing mindfulness meditation too ... I thought I was the only one ...

Reading the wrap website ... without buying anything

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Appleblossom,

It certainly seems worth mentioning what you say to a psychiatrist, if you decide to see one. I kind of recognised that I might be bipolar before I got the diagnosis. In fact it had occurred to me occasionally for years beforehand but I had kept putting it out of my mind because it didn't seem possible my issues could be that 'serious'. Some of the features of my main bipolar high were:

. highly elevated mood and major increase in level of activity
. change of personality from introvert to extrovert
. dramatically increased socialising
. big increase in apparent confidence
. disinhibition in a number of behaviours
. flood of ideas and inability to stop talking rapidly
. inappropriate boundaries in conversation (I talked about sex most of the time)
. major risk taking (involved sudden overseas travel for me)
. major increase in sexual activity and variety of partners
. grandiose self conception (mine had a misguided spiritual bent)

It was more in retrospect that I could see the extreme things that had happened during this time. At the time it was happening I thought I was just living life to the fullest in a way I'd never been 'free' enough to do before. This period was unusually long in my case (five years), and was followed by a slide into a state of irritable agitation and frustration for quite some time and then complete crashing depression and sleeping 20 hours a day. I'd been in a long depression before I went into that high period.

I realise this is a long one. Hope it's helpful to your thoughts to hear a bit more of my personal experience of bipolar.
