Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

I think I'm similar to you but possibly sleep in a bit more and get better chunks of sleep. I'm still not in an real daily routine, still slowly coming out of a long period of having none. It's one of the reasons why my head is so focussed on whether I'm getting things done or not, day by day.

About the possible hypermania, do you have any other symptoms aside from the sleep fragmentation?

Re: Night Shift

Some periods of mild elevation, racing thoughts and increased nervous energy.

Re: Night Shift

I think it's great that you have that focus. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Re: Night Shift

Sounds like you are doing the right thing getting plenty of quiet time. I err on the side of quiet too for the most part so that I don't elevate too far.

Re: Night Shift

Hopefully today if I have that extra energy I'll use it to get some of my list of chores done around the house. I may have a friend staying over Thursday night and after she stayed here last she made a few comments about jobs she'd done here and how dirty certain parts of my home are. (They looked ok to me!) It's echoed on me ever since. I guess her intention was to motivate me and she's a great friend in many ways but I felt she was pretty insensitive the way she worded it.

Re: Night Shift

That was an insensitive thing for he to say and I understand how that might keep echoing. I have a lot of 'echoes' like that, some of them from decades ago! It's good that you can still connect with your great underlying friendship.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks for the encouragement with the daily activities, btw. I feel like a bit of a dork with it sometimes, lol. My head is more positive with the changes than my heart and body, but it's okay that they are a few steps behind. Overall I feel much better for the improvements in living lately. By the way, I hit my target on the smokes yesterday. The challenge for me is maintaining things over longer periods of time. In the past I've often been able to do things short term but not keep them up. Hoping that the very gradual way I'm approaching things this time might work better for longer term changes.

Re: Night Shift

Fantastic that you hit your goal with the smokes yesterday! High five!!! I have to confess that when my sleep has been much more broken and my mood a bit elevated my smoking less has not been as good as what it was. But I know that when I travel with my brother I'll smoke a lot less as he hates it and will be impatient and making comments. Your body must be doing a bit better for all the exercise biking surely. We plan to get bikes for the week we're away - I just hope he doesn't leave me behind and is patient with my lack of fitness.

Re: Night Shift

Oh yes, I smoke a LOT less when I'm travelling and no herb. I have a few weeks down south about every year. Always come back feeling heaps better for it. It can be hard keeping up with fitter people. I hope your brother treats you very kindly on the journey, @eth.

Yes, body is feeling better for the exercise but still resists activity. I was hoping I might lose a little of the weight I've put on with the anti-psychotic medication but that doesn't really seem to be happening even with the exercise. I've stopped putting it on though. Not really too worried about the weight, mainly motivated by health and related considerations.

Re: Night Shift

I put on a lot too until I got onto the med combo I'm on now a few months ago. Am happy to say I've lost a bit over recent months with only a little diet change (more fruit and veg most of the time and healthier carbs and smarter white milk instead of the normal one). Still nowhere enough tho'. Dreaming! I'm so slack about exercise and I know that would make a big difference but it just doesn't happen.
