Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @eth Yea, I hope it doesn't make me manic, but in total honesty, I kinda enjoy my mania's So maybe alittle mania might not be too bad.

I also gained weight on the meds. Seems the big three weight gainers are: antidepressants, mood stablizers, and antipsychotics. I went off my shot for about 6-7 months and lost about 50 lbs. But then Started the shot again cause of mania and delusions, and I've gained it all back plus 10lbs. So I totally can relate in not being able to fit into my old clothes and the suckiness of these weight gain side effects.

I'm hoping since I have stopped a medication that contributed to my delusions that I might be able to stop the shot again...I hate being this large and I even diet and exercise too!

Have a great day @eth

Re: Night Shift

That's great, @eth. Good on you for taking that on board. Sounds like you've worked it out really thoroughly. I know where this has come from on the forum and think you are wise acting on it. My situation with mum is a bit different. There is an uncle and cousin involved in looking after mum down south, been that way for many years, and the uncle is her power of attorney. But she is very independent in spirit and has her own flat and we speak on the phone every week or so, when I get updates on all her medical appointments and other matters. I'm only a flight away if things get tricky.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita Mum also said she's going to do a Health Directive (legal form) and give me and one neice her medical Power of Attorney. It's a big responsibility but it's a lot better than the way it has been until now. The irony of the situation is that I'm the one she was estranged from for many years, but as you know we have worked to have a much better relationship now and her trusting me in this way really means a lot. And other members of the family will worry a lot less about the 'what ifs' once they know this plan is in place. Lets just hope it doesn't take months to make it happen as with what we achieved tonight. Feeling relieved.

@eth, sounds like lots of good starting to happen around you. Great to hear!

Going offline for a while now, may get to sleep before I return again. See you before too long, everyone.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth @Mazarita @Tyler77 @PeppiPatti @Shaz51 @Faith-and-Hope and everyone else that I've forgotten to list.
My day has been one of good news and bad.
I got the temporary position which I'm extremely pleased about.
My birthday girl has changed her phone number since I last rang her 2 days ago. So I tried to contact her on messager but she appears to have disabled that too. Not to be stopped from wishing her happy birthday I was able to put a card on her fb. If nothing else it shows her that I do love her and that she is in my thoughts.
Initially I was very distressed but I realised I was allowing her to upset me. So I've put those feelings aside and I'm grateful that I found a way to connect with her.
Mothers is an interesting topic. My mother remained reasonably well until her death. She remained fully capable of looking after her own affairs until the end which was a blessing for all of us.
Mum and I had some pretty fierce arguments from time to time but we both learnt to agree to differ. I'm so very glad that I phoned her every night for the last 7 years of her life and eventually she would phone me when she got stuck with a crossword. Usually a cryptic crossword. I couldn't save my life if it depended on completing a cryptic crossword but somehow we muddled along together and came up with the answer. These little things gave us the connection that enabled us to move past the disagreements and touch times.
With dementia and the like I imagine it would be incredibly difficult. It's not something I've experienced so I have no little gems of wisdom. For those of you dealing with such difficult times I send you strength and courage.
Hugs

Re: Night Shift

Serious quiz question peeps. I'm taking a cake to a 75th birthday. The 5yo grandson is expecting 75 candles. There's no way I can fit that many candles on the cake.
Do you reckon I can get away with 75 sparklers and if I can how on earth am I going to get them all lit. By the way: I'm going to cover the cake with foil. With all that pyrotechnic material in a confined space I don't want to melt the icing.
Any ideas that mught be easier?

Re: Night Shift

@Kurra

I would make a 7 and 5 out of candles. So that when you look at the top of the cake it says 75. 🙂

Hope that helps.

I'm too tired to have any brilliant ideas @Kurra. Heading for bed now and hoping for a decent sleep.

Goodnight all 🙂

Re: Night Shift

I can think of one way @Kurra.

Presuming it is a round cake ...

Have you seen those tall, skinny candles in multiple colours ? I think they are about 15cm tall, or something, and about the width of a skewer.

If you make a foil "collar" to wrap around the outside of the cake, lay it out flat first, place these tall, thin candles quite closely together along the length of the foil, and run a piece of wide masking tape along the bottom of them to keep them all in place. You can put another section of foil across the top of the tape to conceal it if you want.

Wrap the collar around the outside of the cake and secure it. The candles should sit high enough above the cake, that unless you take a long time to sing happy birthday, they should be fine.

because they are in a ring all around the outside of the cake, but quite close together, they shouldn't npbe too hard to light quickly, especially with one of those stove-lighter wands.

I hope you like this idea and it works for you. Good luck 😊

Great idea @Tyler77 ! That would work well too.
