Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@eth and @Mazarita, hey, sorry about not replying, I was busy readying the apartment for the nurse. She's LATE!! Lol.

That sucks about your mania, I get manic too and my record of not sleeping (without napping or any sleeping) is... guess how many days? 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Hey @Snuchu, I was busy writing an essay on my life to post here while you were away. Bit over the top for this time of day but these thoughts come when they do I guess. I think you mentioned you had been awake for up to two weeks in one go. That is really scary. You said it was unreal, not surprising! Hope your nurse turns up very soon.

Hi @Mazarita @eth et al... 🙂

I did a 1 minute long hug once. It was very special. I'm very much a hugger in real life too, both of people and trees... hahaha...

Re: Night Shift

Hey @Silenus, good to see you up with the birds again. One minute hug, nice one! Trees are great to hug though I haven't done it for a while.

You didn't miss me @Mazarita. Usually after I say I'm going I wait a few minutes just in case of exactly what just happened. You are very compassionate about your Dad. And you seem to have reconciled with your early life at this stage.

Glad to hear you are debt-free now. I'm almost there.

I also suspect my Mum is undiagnosed bipolar but will talk about that another time. I want to go lie down before the urge to nap disappears again.

Hope you have a good day and make it to your appointment and it goes well.

Re: Night Shift

Been lying here awake for an hour, catching up on the night shift. Sending hugs to @Jacques and @Snuchu and @Appleblossom - I hope all the heavy stuff settles for you soon...

Hiya @plasmo

When I was in my teens, 20s and 30s, I would listen to the Goon Show (Peter Sellers, Spike Milligna (the famous typing error) and Harry Secombe) when I went to bed...

Every night for decades - 2 episodes of the Goon Show...

Of course, most of the time I'd only last about 5 or so minutes until I was asleep. I wonder if I sleep-laughed...

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita - that must have been a tough life for your father. We gripe and moan about MI stigma and lack of support and treatment options in this modern age, but it was way worse for our parents' generation...

My dad had a tough life as a kid. He was born out of wedlock in a conservative country (Switzerland) in the 1930s. His mum gave him away. He was a ward of the state, and went through 3 or 4 foster homes by age 11. At one place, his then foster dad was beating him, and the pet dog bit the man, trying to protect my dad. The man went and got his gun and shot the dog, all with dad watching...

It was a major trauma for him obviously. How can people be so cruel?

It brings up an important point about what we do with our life hurt...

Do we hold onto our hurt? Do we swallow it up and let it continue to let it hurt us all our lives? Do we pass that hurt onto others (either deliberately or unknowingly)? Or do we work through our hurt and resolve it?

If we work through our hurt and resolve it, it teaches us empathy and compassion. In that way, our hurts make us better human beings...

For that reason, I love and embrace and accept my life hurts for the true gifts they were..

It's all about shifting your point of view, you know... subtle movements within our minds...

Huggles @Mazarita

Re: Night Shift

@plasmo - do you find that the world seems less real to you because of irregular sleep patterns? When I've got insomnia, everything is just a blur. It's like people are talking to me from the next room, and I struggle to comprehend what I'm seeing...
