Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, great to hear it's a cool morning up there for you. Just went outside for (half) a dhurry. Birds quietly chattering. Nice to hear. I'll probably go back for a bit more sleep in about half an hour I think. Given up on the net searching for now. Do you have anything on today?

Re: Night Shift

I've just got to go to the library to return some things and then pick up a couple of things at the shops. There is an aboriginal cultural festival on, Garrmalang, so if I'm keen and more rested later I might look at that.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, sorry it took me so long to respond to that last message. If you don't tag me directly, I don't receive any notification of a new message. It's part of this tech bug that's floating around the forum for some of us lately. In the meantime I went over and posted something to Silenus. Was thinking he had a big day yesterday. Garrmalang sounds like it would be great to go to if you are well enough. Library also good. I guess it will depend on how the chest infection is treating you. Wishing it away for you.

Re: Night Shift

My oversight @Mazarita usually I tag you every time. I was just reading Silenus's Goodbye Mum thread - very moving. Just realized you were there too!

The chest seemed great when I first got up but is opening up more now. Boring being crook.

What do you have planned for today?

Re: Night Shift

I hear you with it being boring being crook, @eth. As long as I can do some sort of computing I'm usually okay. But if that goes out too, like when I get one of my really bad headaches, then I'm really at a loss. Nothing planned here for today. Beach walk is always on the agenda if possible. Will probably get some more sleep at some point. Might continue working on the video. I do get like a woman on a mission with them once the ball has started rolling, it's true. Many unfinished projects too, for various reasons. I just look at them as practice.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita 'works in progress' is what I call mine. And so is house work here!

Are you with us now @Faith-and-Hope? If so, Good morning.

Re: Night Shift

'Works in Progress'. I like it, @eth. 🙂 Housework is so testing because it gets done and then undone so easily, hehe. But I think all unfinished business will have to wait for me for a while because I am heading back to bed for a while. Chat again later, sister.

I am too @Mazarita. See you on the other side 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita @eth 😊

I am up, but had some work to do and have just come back to the forum now. You have probably both gone back to bed. Sweet dreams 💤

I hope you join us again today @Former-Member.

It was interesting to hear about @eth's adult "gender fluid" daughter (I think that is one of the terms behind used to describe people who identify as neither male, nor female per se). I find you can be tollerant and interested in how people feel about their situation without necessarily agreeing with the personal choices of the people involved. I think that is what you were saying last night.

Please tell us more about this @eth, if and when you are comfortable to. Even if it is not our experience, or in agreement with our own value systems, it is important to be able to empathise with what other people are going through, and that takes understanding the world from their perspective.

This is something that will definitely impact on the generation that my adult children fall into. There will be kids who "try it on" (with all due respect @eth) because the former gender boundary is being challenged, but that is always the case with most things where a boundary is challenged or relaxed. But the pendulum will swing back the other way, and it will settle down into (probably) a minority of the population who live that way. Truth be told, they probably would have found a way to live with that identity in private anyway. Seeing the person is the main thing, and loving them across the divide.

In your situation @eth it seems clear that you are endeavouring to remove as much of that decide as possible so you can try to deal with your daughter on even terms. All the best with that. I am sure there are plenty of challenges there.

Re: Night Shift

I hear you with the "house undone" bit @Mazarita.

I did my best to house-train my family (and yes @Silenus, I am a list-writer) as they grew up, but they all still come tearing through like mini-cyclones every day, husband too. After much tension, discussion, melt-downs etc over this issue across the years, I have just had to accept a higher state of clutter and disorder than I would have liked for my home.

Something I have learned to do it to make small differences in the zone around me, wherever I am in the house during the day. I am the "un-cyclone" 😆 If I am standing in the kitchen I pick up discarded tea towels and fold them back over the oven door handle. Run dishwater into the sink and soak everything left lying around the bench tops in it. Within the next 20mins or so, I come back when it's easier to clean, and leave the washed dishes draining. They won't make it back to the cupboard without someone using them again, so I save the energy of wiping them up and putting them away.

D2 has commandeered the dishwasher as her job in the house, so she is an "un-cyclone" too, but then she is very creative about how and where she chooses to put things away when she unpacks the dishwasher, particularly if she is feeling put-out and vindictive about something. Then I have the cyclone effect happening through the inside of the kitchen cupboards.

Life is very interesting around here.
