Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I think I can guess which one it was. I had a slight increase in dosage in that one too before I went down south, to help calm down the agitation and angry outbursts I can sometimes get being around my mother a lot. It certainly does make me a bit more prone to sleepiness when I sit in a chair for too long without having something active to occupy my mind (like being here on the forum or video editing). But I have found it really helpful in other ways. Sounds like you are fairly active in helping out the people in your immediate community where you are. I read that comment you made to Jacques about helping out someone who was suicidal. That's a wonderful thing you did, helping save a life there. I am very glad too that someone did the same for you at one time.

Re: Night Shift

Hi again, @plasmo and @Kurra. Forum went down for a little while for me here and I missed your posts first time around. Lol to your Greek, @plasmo.

It was closed for maintenance here too.

Re: Night Shift

Thankyou @Mazarita. It does take it's toll if you lose your own needs in the process but it's doing that less to me the more it happens. There was so much I wanted to say tonight but it wasn't right to when he was in the midst of dealing with it. I feel pretty strongly that if someone needs the intervention badly enough the issue of being trusted needs to be put on hold. When my adult child was a teenager they lost one of their closest friends and were the last person the girl spoke to so I also had the experience of being a support person then to learn from. Keeping someone alive with professional help is just so important. Unfortunately that girl was discharged from hospital too soon and went home and was gone within 2 days. Even the professionals can't prevent it sometimes. But that's another whole kettle of fish.

You said things have been pretty intense for you internally today. Want to talk about it?

Hi @Kurra hope you get some relief from your pain and are able to sleep some more.

Re: Night Shift

So do I @eth since I need to get up at 4.30am
I've been to work with no sleep before so it's not new. It does usually mean that the day will be a rather painful one. Such is life.

Re: Night Shift

Kinda funny that we are not allowed to mention medication names on the site but the name of the forum tech operators is the name of the best known bipolar medication (saw it on the screen when the site went down).

@Kurra, I too hope your back settles soon and you get some sleep before work tomorrow. I've had those painful days at work with little sleep in the past and they're no fun. I read in your 'Sleep Demon' post that you have not needed a lot of sleep over the course of your life. It's hard for me to imagine what that must be like. I'm jealous, even though it sounds like you are doing better for usually getting more like 7 hours these days.

@eth, the intensity was all on the inside of me really, just the mood swings I was mentioning. High one moment, slumping the next, feeling just kind of antsy in between, as well as worrying about things. Haven't done too well with my 'postpone the worries' exercise today. But I'm feeling much calmer and better balanced now that the night is well and truly with us. Ah, the peaceful night, how I do really love thee.

But I am heading off to try to get in some zzzzs now. Nighty night.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I noticed that too when the forums went down. True irony at the very least.

Have you been remembering to do your breathing when you feel anxious or antsy? When do you see your dr, therapist or support worker next? Sounds like you could do with a chat with one of them. I seem to be functioning better when I'm awake at night too. But up here that's partly coz it's nice and cool (well all the way down to 25-26ish after days of 34-35 average!). Maybe tomorrow you could take yourself to the beach for a while. I think that's something I'll aim at myself.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, just caught me before I'm heading off to bed. Not really remembering to do the breathing or mindfulness today, bit all over the place with everything. I see support worker on Friday and psychologist and psychiatrist at the end of next week. Yes, beach walk tomorrow is a great idea, will aim for it as I have nothing else on. Sleep well when you get there.
