Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita Good on you for being brave enough to share your work that way. As I saw yesterday, a lot of what I've written was really ranting and raving in a manic and PTSD state but by the same token very therapeutic for me to do it. Not really suitable for sharing, and most of it not relevant to these SANE forums.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I read some of what you and @Silenus wrote in the other thread called 'Writing As A Form Of Therapy' about ranting in writing, and I have done my fair share of that as well. In the worst year of my life I basically wrote my way through it, hours and hours of it every day. It was almost impossible for me to read back later. I was a probably a bit psychotic at the time really and it's hard to revisit those places. I occasionally write a bit of poetry these days, often enigmatic and short. My main focus is video and music. That's what I share on the wider web.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I had a lot of disturbing memories reading mine yesterday. Had to stop after a while and leave some for another day.

I'm going to try for another nap before daylight comes. Talk later.

@eth, thanks for sharing! You are wise to take a break, maybe to look back into it in a slower rhythm over time. I really hope you post more over time!! Sleep well for now.

Just bucking the trend and challenging the definition of night shift...

Hahaha... morning everyone... hey, it's night somewhere, right?

For all the night owls, the eta aquarid meteor showers are at their peak for the next few pre-dawn mornings, so why not lift your eyes to the night sky and snag yourselves a couple of wishes?

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth. I'm doing really well at the moment.

Here I am, sitting in the shade under our awning (Toyota Coaster motorhome), making "Woooooh!" noises at crested pidgeons, and getting answers back from them, which is always a delight.

Some of the best conversations I have ever had have been with seagulls and crested pidgeons. I'm a natural mimic - I can't seem to help myself. I always try to mimic bird calls, dog barks, cat meows, even human accents and voices...

It's fun trying to talk to magpies with their complicated warbling. I don't quite get the sound right, but they certainly notice when I'm talking to them (I whistle and make vocal sounds at the same time to try and mimic their warbles).

I also love whistling to whip birds, and the complex harmonies of the butcher birds is one of my greatest pleasures...

See how easy Mindfulness is? It's child's play (or bird's play even)... hahaha...

A bit later, I may walk the hundred or so metres to fling myself into the ocean and float around for a bit. This morning, I've been writing lots (one of my all-time favourite pastimes in case you hadn't guessed... hahaha...)

I'm writing a story in a form of constrained writing called Pilish, where the length of each consecutive word has to follow the numerical value of the mathematical constant Pi, so the first word has to be 3 letters long, then 1 letter, then 4 letters, then 1, then 5, then 9, then 2, then 6, and so on into infinity. It's very challenging, and great for my OCD counting thing that I've got (I can't seem to stop counting things a lot of the time). The world record Pilish text is 10,000 words (or 10,000 digits of Pi) long, and I plan on breaking that record. I manage about a thousand words per month, and have been going since late November last year. I'm a little bit behind - I'm at about the 4,300 word mark.

Lots of fun and frolics...

Who knows, later I may even walk over to the Mexican restaurant/bar and have myself a cheeky margarita...

It's a hard life, but someone's got to do it.

How are you doing, @eth? I hope the pot hasn't been stirred too much in your re-reading of your previous writings. It can be a very triggering thing sometimes, and needs to be approached with respect and caution at times...

Hugs to all... 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Silenus I used to have a Coaster too, but mine was a really old model that I got for $5000 when I was manic and visiting Lightning Ridge. Truly crazy times about 15 years ago. I was living in it with my kid on and off for about 6 years through several periods when we really needed a home we didn't have to share due to my health issues. It was a mobile refuge despite being a total lemon. Sounds like you have yours parked up in a beautiful location if you are that close to the beach and with lots of birds around. I like talking with birds too but there aren't so many varieties where I live in the suburbs now.

I haven't heard of Pilish writing before but it sounds like a real challenge and very satisfying if you have OCD counting tendencies. Your dedication to your writing is inspiring me.

I'm coping ok with it but looking over my past writing (ranting and raving) really did bring up a lot of old memories. I have put that on hold about half way through the pile and will look at some more when I feel centered again.

Re: Night Shift

Yeah the Coaster is pretty good. She's an old girl from 1983 - more bog than metal. We bought it for 12 grand off a hippy dude out the back of Nimbin, and she's taken us all the way around the anticlockwise circle of Oz in the past year.

We call her "Grandma". She can be a bit cranky at times, and there's been some lengthy stops for repairs along the way, but she's still going strong as our only home...

We've been on the road for 2 years now. But the wheels have to stop rolling soon - time to get back to reality - finding jobs, a place to live, all that real world stuff...

It's been an amazing time...

Hi @Mazarita...

Give the melatonin a shot - it didn't work for me, but as @eth said it works for some people. Good luck. Quality sleep is extremely important....

I'm in pain - on strong painkillers for a toothache - but still in a lot of pain - dentist tomorrow - guessing I will lose a tooth - in the back thankfully....

Financially stretched... Why does life have to be so hard & exhausting...

Will write more when I have the emotional energy....

Namaste,

A
