Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita I must have just missed you when I went back to bed but here I am again. Are you here or sleeping? Yum liquorice tea - haven't had that for years.

@eth, yep, still here. Eating breakfast cereal around 5am now.

Re: Night Shift

Yum @Mazarita I might have some too. Still have a huge box of nutrigrain from the kids' visit - like eating bikkies!

How was the rest of your day yesterday?

Re: Night Shift

@eth, ah nutrigrain, yes, that is sweet and delish. I'm on the vita brits and have also cracked and made myself a coffee now, naughty me. How has your sleeping been tonight? I got to bed before 11pm, woke about 2.30am and have been too awake to go back to it.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I've had 4 sleeps since 7.30 last night adding up to around 6 hours total. My grandmother used to say "an hour before midnight is worth two after" so maybe that's why I feel ok. Crashed out on the couch so early last night. I have these broken nights most of the time over recent weeks so much so that as long as it adds up to enough I'm not stressed about it. Doesn't seem to be much point in getting cranky, my meds work well in every other aspect and I don't want to change them again, which is probably what the psychiatrist would do. However if I start regularly getting only a few hours and extra stress about it I will go back to him.

I spent the afternoon going through my folders of writing and found a few relevant pieces I liked and posted them on Silenus's thread about Writing is good therapy. If you put 'poems' on the search bar you will find it, can't remember the exact name of the thread. Will have a look for it now. It's "Writing As A Form of Therapy".

Re: Night Shift

@eth, my sleep has improved from being dusk till dawn living for a long time, to similarly broken sleeps to you at the moment. I'm thinking of starting to take melatonin to see if I can regulate my sleep a bit better still. This has been recommended to me by both my GP and psychiatrist now. Do you know anything about it? I was thinking about your poetry earlier and will now go off and find the thread. By the way, the rest of my day was okay and the evening was lovely. A birthday get together: just me, partner and our good friend and 'homey' around the corner. Gave her a neck and shoulder massage (3 more to go, my birthday offering to her). She's been very depressed of late and it was lovely to see her pick up and be smiling and enjoying herself more.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita Sorry I really don't know anything about taking melatonin for sleep, except that it works for some people. If they're recommending it then it should be ok with your other meds.

Hope you enjoy the poems. Mine are on page 6 of the thread.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, so glad you posted some poetry. I enjoy them all, especially 'In To Me See' and 'Soar In Peace'. I relate especially to that last one, need to take it on board as a flight manual I think!

Re: Night Shift

Glad you like them @Mazarita. The positive feedback means a lot to me as I was nervous about sharing them.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I also like the rhythms you get going in the poems and that they are short and succinct. 'In To Me I See' makes me smile. I've been an avid (read obsessive) reader at times and have felt the same peaceful sense of flow when immersed in novels.

I also get very nervous sharing my work but smash through it for the most part by sharing on the public web via social media. This is a good thing in one way because I feel creative works are meant to be shared but it often lands me in states like yesterday where I'm just too wound up and wired.
