Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.
To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.
Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.
Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift
Hi @Shaz51
How are you?
That halo around the moon last night bore water - it started raining during the later afternoon and really heaviy - and it's still raining
I got cold and got a book and my sleeping bag and my cat and stayed on the bed until I got warm - it has been very mild for days
This is in Melbourne - and I guess other people in Melbourne feel the same way - this could be it
Oh dread!! - the beginning of winter . ahhhhhhhh
I hope you had a great time with your Mum

Re: Night Shift
Hi @Jacques
You contribute here more than you realise - you are so caring and follow up everyone's messages and that means such a lot
Yes - I do find beauty in nature - I enjoy looking at the sky - and that's how I saw the big halo around the moon last night and knew it was going to rain - and we have had heavy rain in Melbourne - after a long dry period
You are so kind to remind me that I was a good mother to my son - I loved him so much and he was a difficult child to like - but love is different - we can't control love - it just is. He used to be interested in nature too -
And those TV characters - they are based on reality in some way - I don't mean sit-coms - people don't yell meaningless comments at each other 24/7 - who would stay around to listen?
But I write a lot myself - and I have to base my characters on someone - and my characters are never based on one person - but rather a composite of many people - real or fictional or mythical. And this has to be true of the characters on TV too - but we can hope that the best people are around the most

Re: Night Shift
Thank you @Decadian, you are too kind.
I too enjoy looking at the night sky, sometimes I wish I could be on a planet of my own, just me and the stars, no worries, no having to please anyone or conform to society.
You are right, love is a strange beast, it creeps up on you when you least expect it and once it arrives you can only see the good in that person.
You are a very special lady @Decadian, to take on an adopted child and care for him even when times got thought takes a very special person, I know deep down he loved you very much, he was just fighting his own daemons.
I bet you both enjoyed nature together, I can just picture you both on a walking trail or in a park, what a wonderful memory to have, hold onto those memories, sometimes memories are all we have.
I am so glad you have a hobby in writing, I wish I had an imagination, I would like to creat things, I am only good at following instructions 🙂
How are you tonight my friend?

Re: Night Shift
Thanks @Jacques
You are a special person - and I do like the idea of a fully serviced but private place to go to so that being alone could be physically comfortable but leave people free to explore the wonderful world of nature or the universe - for me - making up my stories which have a great seed of truth in them
I love your garden though - and your ship - I am not handy at all when it comes to making things like that.
When I was younger and had a family around me I cooked a lot - but I was a plain cook - I did try vegetarian cooking sometimes and my son like that - so did I - but not other people - it takes all kinds of taste I guess
When I am not feeling very well - which is the case tonight - I think about my son and how he would understand how a change in the weather - an abrupt change in barometric pressure - can make my back ache more - and I feel edgy - he would feel edgy too
I think you and he would have got along well with each other - you would have understood each other
It's a nice thought

Re: Night Shift
Yes, well for me building ships was a way to train myself self-discipline and patients.
I get great pleasure out of my garden, when I can manage to leave the house.
I have never had family around me, they are all over Australia, I have spoken to you more than my own family, that is how little contact I have had with them.
I love to cook, mum and dad encouraged me to do what I want, I was never like the other boys, sports and physical pursuits did not interest me, I was into cooking and electronics, in the 80's that was considered weird.
I know what you mean about the weather, I have something wrong with my lungs, I seem to cough up blood when it has rained, or I get a clicking sound when it is cold.
Maybe a hot water bottle will sooth your back?
Yes I know what you mean with your son, mum and I seem to know when each other are in discomfort.
I would like to think we would have got on well too 🙂 he had a tough life, try not to be too hard on yourself, at least he is at peace now, he is free to venture the heavens and the universe.

Re: Night Shift
HI @Appleblossom
I'm sorry you seem to be extra tired lately - but then this could be because you are able to get out more and get on with your life - we all need to have our own life and it's interests
And it is good news that your son is doing better - it leaves you free to do and think things without having him on your mind constantly
Though I do know - from my own story - that you still think about him a lot
