Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

The talk of computers prompted me to think about a conversation I had a few months ago with some friends (vary generations). It was to do with what has impacted society most in your lifetime? And the subseuent conversation was to do with what do we think will impact on society most next? Which I guess ties in with @Former-Member's question on what the world will be like in 20years time in relation to technology.

The biggest impact on society in my lifetime has been technology and terrorism. Im not sure what I think will impact on society most in the next few years... Im very intrigued to see where technology goes but I also think we will have some rough years of war/terror to come before things get better again and thus belive that will be (continue to be) the biggest impact on society.

Hi @Billamba,

I am not sure if we have met, if not, nice to meet you 🙂

you speak of "the war on terror" yes, it is terrible but man has lived with perpetual war, we always have and always will, man has been harming man since the ice ages, and unfortunately we have not advanced much from then, we seem to have a genetic need to harm others, it is human nature, that is how we have made it to the top of the food chain i suppose.

I often like this saying:

Humans are like a bacteria, we multiply, consume and destroy

War is how humans make money now, it is a very dangeruos road we have chosen as a species, maybe one day their will be a shift in humans way of doing things, i will be so interested to see how things turn out, but from history i can't see much good happening any time soon.

take care

Jacques

Re: Night Shift

I remember using old typewriters when I was young. I was always drawn to keyboards! Maybe it's something to do with nervy fingers that tend to want to be bitten or twiddled against each other. I also remember how fantastic it was when PCs came in because of the 'cut and paste' option. Before that I was writing essays and other things by physically cutting out the pieces of paper and rearranging on the floor before retyping the whole thing again (trying desperately not to make a mistake because 'white out' never really worked well). @Jacques this conversation is bringing back funny memories for me too. Glad it's interesting for you too @Billamba. The technologies of the computer and the internet are the most dramatic change I've seen in my lifetime.

Re: Night Shift

HI @Jacques - no I dont think we have 'met' properly so nice to meet you!

You are right, there has always been some form of war going on - from localised to nationalised to worldwide.

I guess what I meant was to do with the way this latest large scale war has changed the way we live our lives. As in Sept 11, Bali Bombings etc - the large scale terror events that have changed the world we live in. I remember as a child being able to have a look in the cockpit of an airplane - there is no way any child could do that now. Going through an airport and being pulled up by security for having too much liquid, a knitting needle, a can of dry shampoo etc. as they are all potential weapons. Plus many other impacts it has had on day to day lives.

I do hope, like you, that there will be a shift in the way we humans do things. The way we (human species as a whole) treat each other...

Re: Night Shift

Haha, type writers where a bit before my time, dad had one, i nearly broke my fingers using it once, the keys where so hard to press down 😄

I am glad it is bringing back some nice memories @Mazarita, i still get a laugh when people say today how slow their computer is, too many people don't get the joke when i find it funny 🙂

Sorry @Billamba, the biggest change for me is how people interact with each other now, no one talks face-to-face anymore, it is all done through twitter and facebook, i don't have either.

the other day i actually saw a young couple having a conversation across a table at a coffee shop with their phones, it is so sad to see how people can't speak to each other anymore.

i do find talking on forums like this makes me feel more at ease because of my social phobia, so this part of technology for me has been good, meeting all the nice people on here. 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Yes I think the way we communicate now (on computers and mobile phones) has been a huge change in my lifetime. Though the first mobile I got was to play snake on lol!

Re: Night Shift

Yes! I completely agree @Jacques I hate how everything is done through facebook, twitter, technology in general. I do have facebook and find it extremly useful I do find it sad that so many people rely on that for their means of communications.

What happened to chatting face to face? Picking up the phone to have a real, proper, meaningful chat?

I cannot fathom how people can go out and spend an entire meal, coffee etc on their phones. Why bother catching up. Really.... totally amazes me. And not amaze in a good way.

Re: Night Shift

yes @Billamba, i totally agree,

if i had a friend or a partner i would want to spend the time with a coffee or meal chatting to the individual, you are so right what is the point chatting to a phone.

Sometimes i wish their was no technology, it does have it's good points, but i don't think it out weighs the bad.

maybe one day we can all find a technology balance.
